Pakistan military strikes ceasefire deal with Taliban
U.S. Caught Off-Guard
Peter Goodspeed, National Post
Desperate for a violence-free election on Feb. 18, the Pakistan military has orchestrated a ceasefire with the very Taliban leader they accused of ordering the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
...
The latest ceasefire could not come at a more embarrassing time for Washington-- the day the Taliban announced the deal, U.S. officials were publicly praising Pakistan for taking a fiercer stand against Islamist radicals.
On Wednesday, Mike McConnell, U.S. director of national intelligence, told a Senate committee on Intelligence, "What's happened is Pakistan has now recognized that this is an existential threat to their very survival."

The DNI's testimony shows how far the Bush administration is in denial about Pakistan's unwillingess to take on the terrorists. If we have to rely on them to prevent another 9/11, God save us.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t it not so many days ago when a ceasefire was being discussed and shortly thereafter a Predator dropped a load on a target rich location?
I welcome a few more repeat performances of same.

I think the cease fire deal should be; we’ll cease fire when you are all dead/surrender.
That is the deal the US should make to the terrorists.

It is a cease fire, not a cessation. The election has and should have priority.

I’m sure your right. I do hope at this point the Paki military has a more agressive plan to start eliminating many of the key figures roaming about those border provinces. Surely they must realize it is to their advantage to allow our air assets to get goons that otherwise are very difficult to nab.

Perhaps it is time for the Paki Army and Paki Air Force to eliminate a few villages as an example, as to what the supporters of these various jihad and radical sectarian groups can expect in the future.
After all, as we read recently, the Paki government made it clear whole villages would be destroyed if the people continued to support the Taliban and al Qaeda groups.
Perhaps the time has arrived for them to transform their words into some actions. Heavy action at that.
