New ‘Sons of Iraq’ lead CF to AQI hideout (al-Mansuriyah)

BAQUBAH, Iraq – Newly registered “Sons of Iraq” led Coalition Forces to an al-Qaeda in Iraq safe house, Feb. 8.

This tip resulted in the death of six enemy insurgents east of al-Mansuriyah, Iraq.

Soldiers from Troop F, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment were registering new Sons of Iraq when the local sheik informed the Soldiers where an AQI cell was hiding.

The AQI fired on the Soldiers with small arms and rocket propelled grenades. The Soldiers returned fire, immediately killing one armed combatant. An air weapons team completed the engagement -- killing five more armed insurgents.

One insurgent was also detained. There were no Coalition casualties.

“The people in this area will definitely be a lot safer now,” said Capt. Torre Mallard, Fox Troop commander. “One of the guys was the main AQI leader in the area. He was conducting illegal checkpoints, supplying money for IEDs, conducting kidnappings, emplacing IEDs and going around terrorizing people.

“This would not have happened had we not had a good working relationship with the local sheik and his people in the area,” Mallard said. “If they hadn’t helped us out, it wouldn’t have happened.”

Do that mean what I think it mean?

Something like a 500 lb JDAM or at least a Hellfire, right up their posteriors while they have them up in the air?

sounds like it - that had t'smart

I like those ole one-two plays

I hope we're stepping up with the air power.

Good golly, just clean out the nests - keep the heat on - keep 'em scurrying and then let the arms drones get 'em too.

And burn the damn poppy fields - they're nothing but a cash crop for the taliban that allows them to keep fighting.

Give the farmers seed, equipment, donkeys - give em real tractors - if they'll plant other crops. Why are we giving them a choice?

AS long as we allow the poppy fields, we are guilty too = they buy the bullets and bombs that come back on our troops. Tell Karzai that on this point, there is no negotiation.

Stop cleaning out the towns of the vermin and then leaving - to let them come back in to fight all over again.

It's been a perpetual swinging door. Do the generals - who aren't in the front lines - just want the war to go on and on?
