Mayor to Marines: Leave downtown He says urban exercises scare people
By JC REINDL BLADE STAFF WRITER
A company of Marine Corps Reservists received a cold send-off from downtown Toledo yesterday by order of Mayor Carty Finkbeiner.
The 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., planned to spend their weekend engaged in urban patrol exercises on the streets of downtown as well as inside the mostly vacant Madison Building, 607 Madison Ave.
Toledo police knew days in advance about their plans for a three-day exercise. Yet somehow the memo never made it to Mayor Finkbeiner, who ordered the Marines out yesterday afternoon just minutes before their buses were to arrive.
"The mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people," said Brian Schwartz, the mayor's spokesman.
"He did not want them practicing and drilling in a highly visible area."
So after a brief stop at a friendly base in Perrysburg Township, the Marines by early evening were back on their way home to Grand Rapids.
"I wish they would have told us this four hours ago," Staff Sgt. Andre Davis said.
Sergeant Davis, who traveled ahead of the five-bus convoy, stepped from his vehicle into downtown about 3:20 p.m. and was told by a city employee that the mayor wanted him and his soldiers packed up and out by 6 p.m.
Members of the 1st Battalion, 24th Marines have trained periodically in downtown Toledo since at least 2004 and most recently in May, 2006.

“Probably was afraid we would retake Toledo. It is, historically, part of Michigan.”
History says ohio took the land...
in reality:
We lost...and where forced to accept part of Michigan as punishment...
*snicker*
j/k
Im done with ya...
I'm sorry again..... you were spouting off like you actually knew something about training for urban ops. Then you said you were in the Navy....
So I just assumed with the tone of your comments that you must feel that you were somehow informed of training methods of spec ops, urban ops, counter insurgency or guerrilla warfare that you received in the Navy.
So let me get this straight.
- You were bad mouthing the Marine training methods.
- You made a big point about Marines currently in theatre might not have trained in a civilian city and felt that this shot an argument like a "mini-gun"
-You were making snide comments about the fact that Marines SHOULD know about logistics....cause they must have learned that .... uh, where again... boot camp, huh?
- But it turns out your a Navy vet just spouting off about something you know nothing about and putting down people that might have a little more hands on and formal training in the methods you are questioning.
Kewl, I get it.
So how was that tour of duty cleaning the head of the good ship Lollipop? Learned a lot about fighting in a city, when again? Was that before toilet plunging or after barnacle scraping.
Now I'm done with you. Carry on, semen.
I recall when the theater just opened, and there was a long line to see Jaws.

I bet Jamie Farr is proud of his hometown of Toledo .
As a Marine or a Cleveland native?
Did you do any of your active training in Detroit?
Take a look at post 159. This says nothing to you?
You keep on assuming all you want. Looks like you got it down to a science.
So you take some snarky comment and inflate it into an assault on posse comitatus?

Heh. You are the one changing an urban warfare exercise into a training exercise for invading an American city.
I'm sorry, I can't muster the level of paranoia that you seem to aspire to. The marines weren't doing anything wrong, Constitutionally, legally or morally, and all of the handwaving in the world won't change that.
Lol... I did not have to inflate it. By the sound of you and others, it's inflation is welcome.
Show me ONE post of mine where I said anything other than supporting this for what it was, training for urban situations.
You are the one turing this into some black helicopter conspiracy based only on some snarky comments.
Go ahead, I'll wait.
This gets real close my man! I've said from the git go on this thread that I support the Military, so let there be no mistaking that. I also said that this training, so desperately needed to be done in our Urban areas, when they have adequate training facilities on numerous bases across the country, is potential conditioning and it works... ...as pointed out in the post you call "Snarky". A British term if I am not mistaken... Go ahead and call me paranoid. The debates concerning troop movement and training in our streets from back in the Clinton years is cause for great concern. You may not remember it/be aware of it, or think it now, but once we get another communist Democrat in office, and they perform these exercises again, you will hear more voices other than mine, speaking out against it.

Come on, I'm still waiting for proof of this. Give me one of my comments that shows that.
Well keep digging...
They would have been outgunned in Detroit.
MILITARIST!
WAR MONGER!!
(sorry, the other poster has me a little on edge)
I thought they were going to practice and drill in downtown Toledo on a Sunday?
