In an emotional meeting of the Meacham Park Neighborhood Association this afternoon, a common theme was racial divide. People spoke angrily about it, cried about it and prayed to close it. Many also spoke sympathetically of Charles "Cookie" Thornton, the man who murdered five at the Kirkwood City Hall Thursday night before police gunned him down. One man called Thornton a "hero."
About 100 people jammed the two-hour emergency meeting in the former J. Milton Turner school, an 84-year-old building that was renovated into a community center. Roughly one third of those present were white. Annie Bell Thornton, the killers mother, sat in the front row.
Association President Harriett Patton opened the meeting saying, "I have been crying all night, and Im trying...." Overcome by more tears, she couldnt continue. A procession of ministers then spoke of Gods love and the need for prayer and healing, but also called for Kirkwood and beyond to understand Meacham Park.
"It takes prayer and it takes time. This is something that took place over time, and perhaps it could have been avoided," said Elder Harry Jones of Men and Women of Faith Ministries. "There always has been a great divide between Kirkwood and Meacham Park."
He received many "amens."

They’ll be talking about discrimination in another 100 years.
And they will still be “Democrats” too!
An absolutely senseless act of terrorism. The Black Panthers would be proud of the brotha.
This is a bizarre article. Some crazy black guy commits mass murder, other blacks call him a hero for having done so, and the whole tone of the piece is what can white people do for these poor folks. Beam me up!
Dear God, please change the mentality that anyone would call this guy a hero... Amen.
What ever happened to “ACCOUNTABILITY”???????????
Why must mankind continue to be the victim!
They have been taught to be the victim for the last 45 years of my awareness.
A mass murder is the "victim" only in the black community, thanks to Jackson/Sharpton and PC speech!
Had a white guy done that to a "black mayor, city council and police officers" it would be considered a "hate crime."
Not so today, blacks are right no matter what because they are taught they are the victims of "white plantations" and have every right to respond with violence (intersting it's the same violence they display each and every day in their own communities but when they do it to "whitey" they are "heros."
Lol....Have you heard of Obama?
The man is no hero, he was pathological. That should be obvious to anyone. These people should be praying for forgiveness.
“There always has been a great divide between Kirkwood and Meacham Park.”
I really don’t give a shit. Are your parishioners a lynch mob?
If people in Meacham Park want whites to hate and mistrust them, all they have to do is justify five murders.
I smell a lawsuit by the family coming. In this day and age, they’ll probably win.
