Goodbye, Windows XP.

Microsoft, which released its latest operating system, Vista, last year, plans to stop selling Windows XP in stores and through its PC partners on June 30.

Not to mention how hard it is to get good drivers for laptops...

I use some HAM software that is Windoze-centric.

I bught a cheap Gateway for use in the RV and upgraded from Vista to XP Pro - it took a whle to sort out all the driver issues. I have used LINUX in the past & still use it to rescue or crack Windows boxs.

I think the next PC/laptop will likely be a MAC.

I think MS is collapsing under the weight of it's own bureaucracy.

MS is also planning to borrow money to finance its purchase of Google. Times are changing at MS, and not for the better.

Well, actually, in Emacs the default bindings for many modes usually have both CTL-DEL and ALT-DEL bound to the function backward-kill-word, but you can always change those key bindings to any key combination convenient -- and you can always redefine the backward-kill-word function on the fly also. ;-)

I'd use emacs, but I figure using an entire operating system just for an editor is kind of overkill :-)

Strange thing is, that in my preferred shell, I actually prefer emacs command-line editing to vi-style command line editing.

One of the cool things about unix, is there are so many utilities and things out there that you can always find something that works the way you do.

I have to hunt for everything with Vista

I was at Circuit City and asked a tech-clerk if he could help me find something on the Vista-installed computer. He looked for 5 minutes and couldn't find it. That, plus the 5 minutes I put into looking, was all I needed to know that Vista wasn't going to be very good.

Personally, I have found that VPNC works better than Cisco's own client. It should be part of your distribution. Try "yum install vpnc". You run a script against your Cisco vpn config file to convert it to vpnc format.

By the way, QuickBooks will run under Crossover Office. In fact, the company that builds and sells Crossover Office uses QuickBooks internally running under their own product.

Thanks very very much ! When I first started using the cisco client a few years back, all I could get from Cisco was the source and I had endless problems trying to get it to compile under core 3. After I finally solved all those problems and dependencies, the thing never would authenticate against this company’s concentrator. Their tech support didn’t give a rats patootie and didn’t want the hassle of trying to work with me to resolve whatever issue was causing the problem.

I just upgraded one of my servers that I also use as a desktop for a few things to Core 8 - I’ll get right on it and get rid of the Windoze POS !

What is even worse is a forced upgrade to IE7 with this month’s patches. :(

I have never accepted updates or patches from MS. I just turn off updates. I do read independent bulletins and manually go downloads updates that seem useful.

I ran Ubuntu for a little while... it didn’t do anything for me. I’ve been a RedHat and Fedora guy from way back now. As far as software, I prefer ‘yum’ over ‘apt-get’. It’s more intuitive to me.

I have no use for MythTV. It looks pretty neat though.

I hate XP less than I hated ME which I hated less than I hated 98.
Vista is an improvement over XP.

and what i have seen of Vista is a royal annoying pain.

Unstable system, prone to crashes and loves to turn my screen the color of Neapolitan ice cream whenever I use my flash drive.

By comparison, I really liked XP. So naturally, it must go away. Sigh.

Got me. I recently bought a Macbook running Leopard. I’ll keep my PC’s running XP as long as possible, but I plan to replace them with Apple products as it becomes necessary.
