Single women could usher in big government
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | December 8, 2007 | Jim Wooten

Two trends bedevil America. One is taxes. The second, more important, is marriage.

Those who pay no taxes have no check on their appetite for services. If somebody else is paying, nothing’s unaffordable.

At the federal level, 41 percent of the U.S. population is totally outside the income tax system, according to the Washington-based Tax Foundation. Since 2000, the number of filers with no tax liability, zero, has increased from 29 million to 42 million in 2005. Of 132.6 million returns filed in 2005, only 90.6 million paid taxes. The rest got back all they’d paid in — and more.

The second and more important concern, largely because of its impact on children, is the rise of single-parent households. Over the past 25 years, the percentage has grown from a quarter to a third. In Georgia, 35 percent of children live in single-parent homes and 39.2 percent of births in 2004 were to unmarried women, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Almost 70 percent of black children, almost half of Hispanic and a quarter of white children are born to unmarried women.

The liberal polling firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research singled out unmarried women and their potential impact on future elections. What it found should chill the spines of those who wish to reverse, or even slow, the growth of government — not so much because of its cost, but because Big Government steals the initiative and enterprise and independence of its wards.

“Because of the often stark economic reality of a single-income family, they [unmarried women] support an active government that will give all Americans a chance to get ahead, not just the affluent,” the organization reported.

As the nation discovered decades ago with welfare policies that pushed men out of the lives of poor women, except for procreation, women who previously found security in marriage turned instead to government. As Greenberg Quinlan Rosner find, unmarried women are a rich vein to be mined by Democrats. From its findings:

• “Marital status is playing an increasingly defining role in elections. For the 2006 congressional elections, the ‘marriage gap’ was 32 points, far bigger than the gender gap, which was just 9 points. Among women, the marriage gap was an even bigger 36 points … unmarried women tend to vote like other unmarried women, regardless of other powerful demographic variables such as age, income and education.”

• “Unmarried women are easily the largest segment of the Democratic base — bigger than Hispanics and African Americans combined.” And the second most loyal, second only to blacks. They favor Democrats over Republicans by a 70-24 margin, and Hillary Clinton over Rudy Giuliani by 66-30.

• “From 1960 to 2006, the percentage of the voting age population that was unmarried grew from 27 to 45 percent … If this trend continues, the unmarried will be a majority of the population within 15 years.”

• Their top economic concern is health care. “This group strongly supports fundamental reform to provide universal coverage that can never be taken away.”

• “In total, there are over 53 million unmarried women of voting age, a number that dwarfs the percentage of seniors, people of color and even union members.” Of those who voted in 2006, two-thirds chose Democrats. Some 20 million, however, did not vote. That’s 41 percent of the unmarrieds. Among the married, it was 29 percent. But “2008 could be very different if progressives see the opportunity before them.” Unmarried women “emerge as the largest contributor to the Democratic vote in 2008.”

Greenberg Quinlan Rosner views them as the “Democrats’ evangelicals.” opining that “if progressives turn them out, unmarried women can be as important to Democrats in 2008 as evangelicals were to Republicans in 2004.”

Combine the two: fewer people who pay taxes and a growing bloc of women who rely on government for their financial security and their household’s well-being.

The challenge for the nation is to rebuild the traditional two-parent family — primarily for the sake of children, but also as a balance to more and bigger government.

The second, more important, is marriage.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This why the Marxists continually do everything possible to undermine marriage in the government madrassas ( mis-named “schools”), the media, in the courts, and in legislation.

Big strong self-reliant women can’t get along without a hand out from Hillary and her chums.

Is it even possible to sell conservatism anymore? We have well over half the people in this country who are taking government welfare in one form or another. How is it even possible to sell the idea of cutting government spending when the majority of the voting population is a big beneficiary of it?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Walter Williams has suggested peacefully succeeding.

The idea is looking better and better all the time.

The word is “seceding”!

Doing that might be the “successful” solution! :) :)

My lovely first ex, a major Dem, said that government and welfare are used “to control women. We want them UNDER OUT THUMB.” Dems do not want to help women, they want to CONTROL them. Many women regardless of thir marriage status, do not want to work. I always said the Dems were the Donkey Plantation. hite men were the slavemasters, minorities, and especially women, ARE THE SLAVES. They don’t get it.

An idiot chick once screamed at me, “what about my health care?” I told her, “I have to pay for MY health care, so why should YOU get yours FREE/” She had no answer to it, other than she was ENTITLED to it.

Exactly. I've been saying this for a while. The problem we have promoting conservatism nowadays is that we've got a population that has been conditioned to expect "stuff" from the government as a sign that "government is working for them."

The benefits of conservatism, by contrast, are manifested in the form of "negatives"--smaller government that by doing less "stuff" eventually yields more prosperity and freedom for a country's citizens.

But people unfortunately want immediate, concrete results, such as a check in the mail or "free" health care. They apparently don't even mind giving up some of their liberty in the process, just so long as someone else is taking care of their needs.

I know one of those. A bloated, stupid welfare female with two communist kids who destroy as much property as possible. Sits on her fat ass all day and drinks beer. Swears and yells at her kids. Has a satellite dish. The entire yard is a pigpen. The neighborhood despises her. Other kids can’t stand her kids. Yep, hillary voter.

I work with an unmarried single mom, living with her BF, father of her child. They are in a web of entitlements — subsidized housing, medicaid, disability (his) and food stamps? I can’t remember it all. As we are talking about W2s, she and another co-worker were looking forward to their refunds. I tried to explain that I zeroed out all possible exemptions because I wanted to take the money and run rather than loan it to the government interest-free. Their eyes glazed over. Like I came from another planet.

They plan to vote for Obama.

Try being a single parent male (widower) in today’s society. There are supports everywhere for women, lazy welfare fat types, and IMO none for single male parents. I have very little sympathy for the women that come in to my business crying saying they need a handout because they are a single parent. Society has bent over backwards for this category of women and we as a society have formed a race of welfare recipients.

With the gov’t there as a backstop,

women don’t have to be as choosy about the man that they make kids with,

and men don’t have to be as high in character in order to obtain a mate (and sex).

Yep, the nanny state has been goooood for our society.

Withdrawing emotional support and giving your best to your friends rather than your spouse is another form of ‘cheating’. I’m sure I’ll catch flack for saying that, but it’s true.

No flack here. That is what happened to my marriage. I was at fault. No infidelity physically. We have since made up. Making up has been fun. :>)))

because men are scared, selfish sissies and don’t want the responsibility of a wife and a family

Because we have a whole "movement" that denegrates strong, masculine, responsible, male leaders. And a bunch of moms and dads raising their little boys accordingly.

It is driven by self-centered, irresponsible behavior.

This is what you get when you drive religion out of society.
And why drive religion out of society? So you can do whatever you damn well please, shoving your jubblies in any warm spot you can find, without guilt or consequences.

Whatever you think about abortion, there is an unintended consequence: MEN ARE LET OFF THE HOOK. Before abortion, my ex always said he would marry me if I became pregnant. After abortion became legal he said that if I got pregnant, that would be MY PROBLEM, NOT HIS, as I could abort it. He was “off the hook.” I think out of wedlock births skyrocketed when abortion was made legal.

Why don’t guys want to get married any more?

Why don’t men have to achieve higher character standards in order to obtain a mate?

liberals.

Pretty much true. I've been in and out of the dating scene the past five years mainly because they guys just want to play house without the commitment. I can honestly say, that while I love all my guy friends, not one of them is mature enough to be in a marriage. Its all about the bars, the toys, and the booze. And they're all over 34. I've found guys in their late 20s who are more responsible and mature than guys my own age.

But there are some damn crazy women out there too. I have a couple girlfriends where all I can do now is shake my head.

When you have a society without fathers, you’ve got to expect single moms to become a voting bloc.

Yes...but they aren't worth marrying just to keep Hillary out of office. ;)
