I work with an unmarried single mom, living with her BF, father of her child. They are in a web of entitlements — subsidized housing, medicaid, disability (his) and food stamps? I can’t remember it all. As we are talking about W2s, she and another co-worker were looking forward to their refunds. I tried to explain that I zeroed out all possible exemptions because I wanted to take the money and run rather than loan it to the government interest-free. Their eyes glazed over. Like I came from another planet.

They plan to vote for Obama.

My experience with these types of women are that their lives are never-ending soap operas. A great percentage of them won’t vote because:

The car broke down.

Some major appliance failed.

They had to spend an entire day at the Social Services office filling out paperwork for some entitelment or other.

They had to spend the day at a sale/getting their hair done/getting their nails done.

One of their kids/lover/boss/co-worker did something/said something that will cause them to spend the day in emotional turmoil.

They had a health problem and spent the day waiting at the ER.

They had PMS/a horrible period/were exhausted from either and slept all day.

They just met someone attractive and spent the day with him.

Their connection finally came through.

They do not follow politics, assume their benefits will continue and don’t see how anything political affects them, anyway.

If none of this is true, then how did W ever defeat Kerry?
