Republican John McCain asked disgruntled conservatives to support his presidential bid on Thursday, shortly after Mitt Romney ended his struggling campaign and made McCain the all-but-certain nominee.
McCain assured a conference of conservative activists he was one of them, citing his commitment to win in Iraq, halt Iran's nuclear ambitions and rein in the federal government while drawing sharp contrasts with potential Democratic opponents Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
McCain's speech, which drew boos on the topic of illegal immigration, followed by a few hours Romney's surprise announcement at the conference that he was ending his run to allow Republicans to focus on the November election.
"I feel I have to now stand aside, for our party and for our country," the former Massachusetts governor told the shocked crowd, some of whom gasped and shouted "No, no!" in response.

It IS a McCain candidacy after all. Suggest someone. I'm not saying we all don't have a reason to stay home or do a write-in. But if there's any chance you'd vote for McCain what are you're conditions?
You have made the only possible argument for voting for McCain. At least he’ll be able to return salutes properly.
It’s going to hurt to have to do it, but if it’s a choice between an insane, unstable McCain, vs. the very incarnation of evil herself, I’d rather have Cpl. Namsman Jr. serve under McCain for the remainder of his contract.
Namsman sends.
What do you call somebody who supports embryonic stem cell research?
bump
I absolutely agree with you. Those of us who say we’re not going to vote, or at least not vote for theMcCaniac, PLEASE GO to the polls and pull all the levers possible for the Senate and the House.......Our only chance is to take back Congress to have s o m e o n e to help us NOT to lose anymore freedoms and rein-in “whoever” becomes President.......
Too bad it is not just a movie.
Then maybe he should adopt a conservative platform.
Are you beseeching McCain’s people to carry out #2?
Admirable, AmericanMade1776. I hope everyone who has had a change of heart is send John Sidney money, too, because he’s going to need it.
It might be a liberal conspiracy, part of the plan to get Hillary Clinton elected, manipulate the Republican Party into nominating McCain and infuriate the conservatives, causing them to sit out the election. We are being played. It looks like I will have no choice but to vote for someone I can’t stand because Hitlery needs to be stopped. McCain is so unlikeable. It’s not even funny. I have never heard, in my life of someone voting for someone they can’t stand, but that is exactly what I will be forced to do. This is the worst possible situation!
Very well said.
Good post....I guess that will be the bitter pill I will swallow.
Well, did you hear, Hillary Clinton is already on the attack on John McCain today. It’s no accident that she waited until he secured the nomination. She was talking about how John said he knows nothing about the economy. I want to scream!!! I am so ticked, we are going to be forced to vote for John, and lose anyways. It’s over. It’s like living in Germany, there was no way to stop Hitler from taking over, he was too evil and too many enabled him, though some poor souls tried to stop it, they were powerless, that’s how I feel.
You just described McCain-Feingold and McCain-Kennedy.
A six pack of what ??? 151 ??? That's what it'd take.
I'm not going to waste my vote. I'm writing in a true conservative, and letting the GOP know they could of had my vote.
I’ve been thinking about this, we all have done our best to come up with a candidate we could gladly support, for most of us that didn’t happen, I was a Hunter, Thompson supporter but I voted Romney after my choices withdrew,
now I will do my best to support John McCain and let me tell you why, “HE IS CLOSER TO US THAN THE ALTERNATIVES!”
To all those who say they will never vote for him, you are really voting for OBAMA/CLINTON ! IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT??
The rather tired argument that perhaps we need four years of democrat leadership to wake up the party is foolishness
and only condems us to more of the same in years to come.
Your NON vote only adds to the democrat MANDATE! IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT?? A MANDATE the rats can use as a catchall
for whatever they want to push through? Broad coattails for RAT candidates to the House and Senate to ride to victory on??? Where will you be then!!!
In the words of Donald Rumsfeld , “Sometimes you have to go to war with the Army you HAVE instead of the Army you want.”
Such in the situation we find ourselves in, let us gird ourselves for the struggle we know is coming and make war with the candidate we have.
You and I know we CANNOT afford another CLINTON administration. It’s time to climb out of the trench and
do our duty, to ourselves and our nation.
I WILL NOT GIVE UP TO THE DEMOCRAT THUGS!!!
So Lucy, take your whining and your damn football and go home, I’ve got an election to win.
Now maybe some of your are thinking that McC isn’t really a leader, ok, but I’m a MARINE and we say, LEAD,OR GET OUT OF THE WAY! IF we LEAD McCain will have to FOLLOW or we will run over him like a Israeli D-9. Mr. McCAIN, you hear me?
We will support you but you screw over us and we will hold your feet to the fire! You better think about being a trusting friend to us and a grudging aquaintance to the democrats or we will make your remaining term hell on earth.
Now John, go out and win one for the Gipper.
Anyway, just the thought of ol’gimlet eye snarling at some
reporter gives me a warm fuzzy feeling, and I know he has got to scare the crap out of some wussy foreigners.
Maybe he wants to give tax breaks to the filthy rotten rich? Maybe hes a racist bigot and wants to deport Mexicans?
No, it must be time honored principles he holds so dear to his heart. Race-baiting, class-warfare, cheap-shots, sand-bagging, sucker-punching, double-crossing and back- stabbing.
That the John McCain I know.
He is not going to win. Why force yourself to set aside your principles for a guy who cannot win? He doesn’t deserve you setting aside your beliefs and holding your nose to vote for him. You’re going to sell out your beliefs and the guy you sell them out for will lose anyway. You’re going to be worse off than anyone else. You won’t even be able to say I voted my principles.
And don’t say one of my principles is not letting a democrat in the WH. That is a political strategy, not a principle. Lesser of three evils, that may be. But not by much.
