(VANITY) A Bad time to be a Conservative, but things could be worse.

We need to face up to the facts of this upcomming election. It seems that electorally it is a bad time to be a Conservative. The Primary turnout was almost two to one for the Democrats, and the mood of the nation seems decidedly anti-Incumbent and anti-Republican.

That being said, it might well be a good thing that the Republican nomination process didn't select a rock ribbed conservative; based upon my present assumtion that our nominee is doomed to electoral defeat no matter who we picked.

I was thinking who I wanted McCain to pick as his Vice Presidential candidate; or more accurately who he could pick that would make the ticket more palatable to me and other Conservatives. That is when I realized that I didn't want McCain to pick a viable Conservative candidate that would then be besmirched by their association with a losing ticket. In that context it might be better if he does pick another RINO. After this election we may hopefully have heard the last of McCain and/or Huckabee's Presidential aspirations.

I am not giving up, I will vote in November, and I encourage everyone else to vote as well; but a President Hillary/Obama (is there a difference politically?)seems to be in the cards. Hopefully every other Conservative and/or Republican will vote as well and we will not give our next Democrat President 'coat tails' by giving them huge majorities in the House and Senate and in the Statehouses.

In America the pendulum swings from right to left and then back again. Does anyone doubt that a Hillary/Obama with a Democrat Congress will scare the bejezus out of the electorate and hopefully lead to Republicans regaining the House and possibly the Senate in the midterms?

What do FReepers think is the best way to either....

a) get McCain/some RINO ticket elected (I think it is unlikely)

b) limit the 'coat-tails' of our probable new Democrat President

c) change our nomination process to get a more Conservative nominee

d) limit the damage to America that will be enacted by a Democrat POTUS and Congress

and

e) restore the faith of the electorate and the GOP in Conservative principles of governance.

I know that staying home is not an option for this Conservative, and neither is giving up. I hope you are all with me in this sentiment.

Any ideas on how best to go forward in advancing a Conservative ideology?

I think the best strategery is to get McCain to get a conservative running mate (Hint: Lindsey Grahmnesty is not a conservative) and then elect him and hope for the best.

I think this is the best hope McCain has for getting support from conservatives.

I think the main reason we are in this mess is because of our irrational fear of Hillary so instead of scrambling to find the best person for the job, a lot of us started scrambling for the person we believed had the best chance of beating Hillary.

The worst reason to compromise your center is out fear. Deliberately selling out is a better reason to compromise than fear.

Agreed, today is no worse for being a conservative than yesterday was, we just didn’t know it yesterday.

Sort of like the people in the UK who think they are citizens, and just don’t realise they are only subjects, with no more “rights” than their betters allow them at any given time.

If we are different, show me how? The government is into every aspect of our lives already, and regardless of which liberal, Totalitarian State party wins the election, they will dig themselves further into our lives over the next four years. Yes, the government is more intrusive in the UK. Many of us who post on FreeRepublic would face hate crime charges in the UK or Canada, but give me some assurance we won’t be in the same spot they are four years from now.

We are now all chattels of the State, and we had better start thinking of the greater good, and forgetting individual rights and independence. If our betters want illegal aliens in the country, or to give New Mexico back to La Raza, or confiscate our firearms and hunting knives, who are we to question them? After all, they are experts and have fancy degrees.

I don’t think I’ll be voting in November. Why would I? This one goes to Hillary or Barak Hussein. So what, it’s their turn, right?

I agree about McCain needing a conservative running mate, especially as he said he doesn’t seek a second term. If he wins (a big if) we need a strong successor. Bush showed his weakness by picking a mentor as VP rather than a successor.

I am not part of the Drive-By; please don’t pin this on me. PLUS I wasn’t a corrupt member of the Republican Congress. I have always supported conservatives, and I am currently working on a campaign to elect a conservative locally.

Where do you get off telling me this predicament is MY fault? I just want to make the best of the cards we are currently dealt.

I was just being over the top to prove a point. I don’t blame you personally. I was just saying something similar to what you said but spun differently.

mccain knows that he cannot win the Conservative vote... get over it... it is NEVER going to happen. 100% certainty. He will have a chance if he can swing enough mccain dims and liberal indies away from osama and the beast. He will win CT and many blue states by just picking his bestest buddy Lieberman as VP. He will do it and it will happen as surely as taxes will be going up and pay will be going down.

You really think McCain is going to pick Lieberman? WOW! 50 state electoral defeat if he does. Why pick two almost Democrats when they have two real Democrats?

I think the enthusiasm is way too high on the Democrat side for electing the first Monica’s boyfriends wife/half-black former Muslim named Hussein for McCain/Lieberman to win any blue states; and I agree he will have trouble in red states.
