Laura Ingraham: Romney is "the Conservative's Conservative" [Huh?!]
The Swamp ^ | 02/07/08 | Mark Silva

Posted on 02/07/2008 1:37:38 PM PST by BrerRabbit

"I think the question," she [Ingraham] said to cheers, "is what have you been doing for conservatism lately? Mitt Romney is the conservative’s conservative," she said, suggesting that of all the people who got to introduce candidates at this forum she was the one introducing the conservative.

Like Arkansas is conservative, Clinton was not. But if you looked at Bill’s record in Arkansas, you’d probably find some conservative things he did in order to get himself elected. It doesn’t mean he’s a conservative, though.

No, it means he's a lying scumbag who'll say and do anything for a little power.

You really think comparing Romney to Clinton is a compliment?

There’s truth in that, and it begs a question. Is conservatism compatible with modern politics?

“I think Romney is conservative. Massachusetts is not. Ya gotta distinguish between the two.
Like Arkansas is conservative, Clinton was not. But if you looked at Bill’s record in Arkansas, you’d probably find some conservative things he did in order to get himself elected. It doesn’t mean he’s a conservative, though.”

These are not the activities of a conservative. Massachusetts did not keep him caged as you imply.

You know about him campaigning on not having supported Reagan and then later being against the Contract with America.
He did not even switch his registration to republican until he decided to run for office (for the 1994 election) . Nobody was forcing him to be a liberal when he was only giving money to democrats.

“Willard Mitt Romney donated $250 in 1992 to then-U.S. Rep. Dick Swett’s (D New Hampshire) successful re-election campaign. The one-term congressman served another term before losing to Republican Charles Bass in 1994. Two years later, Swett ran unsuccessfully against Republican Bob Smith for one of the Granite State’s U.S. Senate seats.

In 1992, the former Massachusetts governor and current Republican presidential contender , also donated $250 to Rep. John J. La Falce (D New York) and $1,000 to Douglas Delano Anderson, an unsuccessful Democratic primary candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Utah Republican Jake Garn, who retired that year.

So, between July 1989 and October 1993, Romney exclusively financed these three Democrats.”

Yeah, I hear you. I'll bet a lot of them used to enjoy pulling the wings of flies when they were kids.
There's a time and a place...this ain't it, IMO.

Laura and many other conservatives must have fired up the crack pipes.

One understands....

However, we are much better off with unclouded judgment for the battle ahead-—no matter how great the pain.

Just giving my opinion here, but I personally hate a few of McCain's positions. I didn't vote for McCain in the primary. But if he gets teh nomination, I think I have to evaluate the candidates on their whole records and positions. McCain did a great job today of convincing me today that as a conservative I have to vote for him and against the dems.

As a conservative I am probably conservative on close to 100%v of the issues. You ask if conservatism is compatible with modern politics. I say yes, but it's unrealistic to hate any candidate who deviates on 1 or even 10 out of 50 issues. All the candidates had weaknesses in their past records, some even faulted Thompson over Chinagate and some abortion positions.

So my bottom line is people are focusing way too much on the few issues they hate each candidate for, and not looking at the total candidate.

“I think Romney is conservative. Massachusetts is not.”

I disagree with the first part of your statement, but even if you feel that way, you have to consider that Congress will be liberal, and Romney’s confrontation of Liberals in Mass wasn’t inspiring.

Romney gets to be the latest (failed) conservative savior he was no more solid conservative than McCain, Huckabee, etc.

The reason you believe that is because you have been listening to anit-Romney garbage. All of you forgot that he was a conservative Republican in a far left State. Much what he had to sign was a compromise like some of the things Bush has had to do. If Romney used his veto pen it would have no effect since the Mass Legislature is overwhelming left and far left and would have overridden anything Romney did. Even the Court dictated what he could do. He had to compromise to at least get a portion of conservatism in the mill. Wake up! Never mind, closed minds cannot be reasoned with. Take CA, total liberal and all Arnold could do is play with some of it.

“It was reported that more female Republicans fell (voted)for Romney than men. You can take it from there.”

LOL! Yeah, I noticed the *girls* here on FR making a big deal about how handsome, tall, and adorable he was. They were acting like teenagers at a Beatles or Elvis concert going gaga over this guy. “Ahhhhh, ohhhhhhh, my man Mitt!!!!” The only thing we didn’t see them do was throwing him their underwear at him so he could wipe his sweat off and throw it back at them. And these are today’s “conservatives”??? Geesh!

So how on Earth do you think he'd advance the conservative agenda in Washington, faced with a Democratic Congress?

You may think that he just rolls over a lot, I personally think that he has no core principles. Sounds like we're not actually that far apart.

We conservatives were disappointed by a succession of “the most conservative guy who can win.”

I don’t know what to do about that. FRed was clearly the right guy, but after you give him money, talk him up, and he does nothing in the polls, then what?

I think this is a candidate molding and recruitment problem. You just need to have the right guy / gal carrying the message. If you have someone who is clean and articulate :-) then the message will work.

Romney’s flaw was that while he always ended on the right note, he usually started from a real honker. Health care? Gimme a break. I could barely believe he would stick to his finally stated conservative positions. Not a real life-long thorough-going conservative.

Oh well. There’s always beer and fishing.

You’re talking about ancient history, though. I voted for Carter once. Four years later, I voted for Reagan and promised I would never vote for another Democrat. And I haven’t.

And Reagan himself was a former labor union President, Democrat, and New Dealer.

People change. And if you think that Romney is the only politician who reversed himself, think again. Huckabee pretty much made an about face on every major issue from the just beginning of the campaign, except abortion. At the beginning of the campaign, he was defending his liberal positions on illegal aliens, high taxes, crime, and spending. He was even complimenting Bill Clinton and attacking Bush. Now he’s a new man, promises to cut taxes, even abolish the IRS and adopt the Fair Tax, signed a no-amnesty pledge, and yet he accuses Romney of flip-flopping on the same issues.

Even straight-talker McCain has reversed himself on tax cuts and amnesty since the beginning of the campaign. In a sense, he’s the biggest flip-flopper of all since he’s spent the last 10 years stabbing conservatives in the back, and now he claims to be a Reagan conservative.

Romney has not flip-flopped any more than the others have. He’s just more conservative than the others are.

“Now it’s nothing but her angrily screeching at everyone...”

Right you are, Inkling.
I remember about a month ago when, for the 84,274th time she referenced her Power To The People (aka “Money To The Bank Account”) Tour she said,
“I’ve met a lot of angry people out there”
Well, yeah, angry people tend to attract angry people.
or, as Laura would say,
“Well, yeah, angry people tend to attract angry people, OK?”

Of all the Republicans who have dropped out of the race so far, Duncan Hunter is the only “Conservative’s conservative”.

Wow! Who are you anti-Romney people going to kick now that you’ve knocked him out? Please, Romney, get back in the race so that some of these FReepers have a reason to fill these threads with worthless, incoherent postings.
