Jail politicians who ignore climate science: Suzuki
Didn't mean it literally says scientist's spokesperson
David Suzuki has called for political leaders to be thrown in jail for ignoring the science behind climate change.
At a Montreal conference last Thursday, the prominent scientist, broadcaster and Order of Canada recipient exhorted a packed house of 600 to hold politicians legally accountable for what he called an intergenerational crime. Though a spokesman said yesterday the call for imprisonment was not meant to be taken literally, Dr. Suzuki reportedly made similar remarks in an address at the University of Toronto last month.
The proposal has lit up many conservative blogs since it was first reported by the McGill Daily on Monday.
Addressing the McGill Business Conference on Sustainability, hosted by the Faculty of Management, Dr. Suzuki's wide-ranging speech warned against favouring the economy to the detriment of the ecology -- the tarsands in Northern Alberta being his prime example.
"You have lived your entire lives in a completely unsustainable period," he told students and fans. "You all think growth and [climate] change is normal. It's not."
Toward the end of his speech, Dr. Suzuki said that "we can no longer tolerate what's going on in Ottawa and Edmonton" and then encouraged attendees to hold politicians to a greater green standard.
"What I would challenge you to do is to put a lot of effort into trying to see whether there's a legal way of throwing our so-called leaders into jail because what they're doing is a criminal act," said Dr. Suzuki, a former board member of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
"It's an intergenerational crime in the face of all the knowledge and science from over 20 years."
The statement elicited rounds of applause.

When the media wants you to agree with someone unquestioningly, they call him a "scientist." I just looked, and sure enough, Suzuki's degree is NOT in climatology but zoology. His credentials on this are about as strong as Al Gore's.
I’m sure Galileo would be happy to hear this. Why he was exonerated for his scientific beliefs in just last year.
I think we ought to jail politicians that lie.
I think we ought to jail scientists that lie about global warming too.
BS = Well, you know what that means
MS = More of the Same
PhD = Piled Higher and Deeper
Actually that was 1 of the huge problems with all those claims about how much “scientific” support there is.
1 of the problems being exactly the Clintonian smoke&mirrors language: “millions of SCIENTISTS agree”. Well, sure, they’re “scientists”, but they weren’t involved in climatology specifically!
The other problem being they fraudulently included scientists who did NOT sign on.
“Deal with the old and infirm.”
But, but, that’s what conservatives do - they push old women in wheelchairs over cliffs!
I remember reading some of those “scientists” were dentists...............
I also would suggest that scientists that make wrong predictions to be thrown in jail to keep them “accountable”. So all these scientists who keep making scary predictions that don’t end up true should be in jail.
Environmentalists like this see the human population as the real issue. It isn’t unrealistic to see a jump from “jail politicians” to “kill the people destroying the environment.”
People with totalitarian mindsets are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Right now, we have ELF burning ski resorts and car dealerships. If they gain political power, the same people will be establishing re-education camps and filling mass graves.
“hes having too much fun with global warming and getting honors like the Nobel Peace Prize.”
Ah yes, and I’m still trying to figure out what GW has to do with “peace”.
If anything, it sure has provoked the opposite of it.
Shoot totalitarian scientists.
You anti-dentite ba#@#!%
And you thought the Spanish Inquisition was bad!!
Shoot envirofascists and their enforcers when they try to arrest dissident scientists.
Literally or not, it’s a good idea, and then jail all the scientists who don’t believe in globalist whoring. Jail me because I’m never going to cooperate with all this world socialism. I just bought a big diesel pickup. I’m running an electric heater because my air fowling, wood burning stove hasn’t heated the entire house yet, and I think globalist warmers and the politicians who follow them are brainwashed, satanic idiots. And having us all in jail, feed us. McCain is big into the globalist warming scheme. Maybe a crackpot like him would put a little gestapo behind the cause. Start the Globalistland Security Force or something, and come after all us conservatives who don’t eat the the greenie garbage. Better yet, take this little jerk, fascist scientist, and water board him with tiny ice cubes until he admits he really did mean it literally.
well the first part of the line was ok. Jail Politicians.
Mr. Suzuki needs a swift kick in the butt.
