WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Politicians have finally found an issue they all can agree on: Telemarketers calling at dinnertime are a scourge that must be repulsed.
Congress on Wednesday sent to President Bush two bills that would make permanent a program to protect consumers from unwanted phone calls from telemarketers. Its hallmark is the national "do not call" list.
"This initiative has proven to be one of the most popular laws in history," said Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C. Extending the program was necessary "to avoid the wrath of millions of angry constituents."
The Do Not Call Registry, initiated in 2003, has been widely acclaimed for allowing Americans to eat their suppers in peace. Some 150 million people have listed their phones on the registry, which prohibits calls from telemarketers.
"I remember times we just used to take our phones off the hook," said Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Pa., a leader on the issue, recalling pre-registry days.
"Consumers without exception hate the annoyance of intrusive telemarketer calls at dinnertime," said Chris Murray, senior counsel for Consumers Union. "When nearly every American household has taken the time to register, that says something really strong."
Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas, put it in political terms: "With a 10 percent approval rating it is incumbent upon us to continue to pass legislation that is indeed popular."

Exactly. I’m on the list. 5 calls starting around 5 p.m. just tonight.
Some of the most disreputable companies ignore the do not call list. There is new help, though. There is a web site that helps identify the origin of the calls, so that you can make a complaint. I think that it is called, Who’s calling me. If you google the phone number that appears on your caller ID, it usually comes up in the top few listings. People post the numbers and any information that they have found about the callers. It’s cool, I’ve gotten rid of two pests, that way. I called them back and told them that it was illegal to keep calling me and the state attorney general’s office told me that I could get $500 per call and triple damages if they continued to call me after I notified them. They immediately changed their answer and assured me that the calls would be stopped.
If any telemarketer calls you - take down name, date and time.
Tell them you are on the DO NOT CAll list and hang up.
When they call again, get contact name again - inform them that you are turning them in and will be collecting the $5,000 they now owe you for breaking the law.
You will never hear from them again.

I’ve been on this since it came out - it’s made a world of difference except for the local police/fireman calling asking for money they should get from the government in the first place.
Why can’t we get a “do not mail” list too? That’s where they’re going now anyway.
The “Do Not Call” law has always explicitly excluded politicians, non-profits, and businesses that you already have a relationship with (like your bank or newspaper). They are still allowed to bother you.
You would think that if we could send a man to the moon, we could stop unwanted FAXs.
Many UNWANTED faxes as well as the newest form of torment in business, Recorded messages. Every week at work I get at least
5 a day, sometime more. An they are all BS.

Why is this the govt’s problem? How about we pass a bill that says if there are no good ideas left, the legislators can go home, with pay, just to stay out of mischief?
Okay, so Congress did one thing right out of 5000. A toast—to the one thing done correctly.
A lot of calls with caller ID get a quick answer/hang up if we suspect that they are not something we want. Too bad congress can't impose a death penalty on unwanted calls, faxes and emails.
Thanks for posting the link. I'm curious whether you've used it. I went to the site and it looks legit, but it sure does have the potential to be just another way of mining data. Can you vouch for it?
