The nazis did a lot of horrible stuff. But they were actually the ones who found these mass graves and invited forensic scientists from around the world to examine the evidence less than two years after the discovery.

This was a Russian NKVD crime by all conclusive evidence.

Don't you feel warm and fuzzy about another Clinton in the white house just as the Russians embark on another attempt to rewrite this history?

Wow Russian who lie and make up things. Who would have thought it possible?

Some things never change.

He needs to go check the Soviet archives. There he can find the memo from Beria recommending liquidation and Stalin’s marginal note approving same. All predates Germany’s Operation Barbarossa by many months.

And, it seems funny that the Germans would use Soviet ammunition to execute the Poles.

In 1943, after the Germans found the corpses, they paraded a bunch of American POW’s out to the site. The American POWs knew they were being used as propaganda tools by the Germans and refused to publicly acknowledge German claims of the Soviet atrocity. However, privately they all believed the Germans were right and the Soviets were responsible. This was related in Alexander Werth’s “Russia at War.” Werth was very sympathetic to the Russians.

It’s funny how they can still be in denial over this. Gorbachev admitted it and Yeltsin released all the papers proving it.

The Poles know very well what happened and who did it. Putin’s only going to be able to convince the ignorant. This blatantly false claim will keep the Poles from ever shaking his hand.

Moscow has refused to define the murders in Russia and Ukraine as ‘genocide’ or regard them as war crimes.

Well, they're right about one thing: the massacre wasn't a genocide, which is the wholesale murder of a whole people. If the NKVD had attempted to murder all Poles, it would be a genocide. It was, however, a war crime, and an aggregious one at that.

I remember seeing a reproduction of the SIGNAL magazine showing the finding of the site. Brutal.

It wasn’t a genocide. It was a war crime. The goal wasn’t to eradicate the Poles as a people — that would have been genocide. The goal was to eliminate military officers, the intelligentsia, all the obvious candidates to lead Poland — except the Communists. From the moment the war began, the USSR was planning for its aftermath, and they used the fog of war to cover up knocking their opponents off the playing field.

I’m not surprised that some Russians are trying to revisit the accepted version of facts on Katyn — no one wants to think his country could do what the Soviets, in fact, did.

This is interesting. All this re-writing of history seems to be going on in other places as well ;o) I still say the 1965 edition of World Book Encyclopedia is a good investment. ;o)

The Germans filled plenty of mass graves in Russia. Most of them would probably have been killed if they were captured by the Germans too. That being said, it was Stalin who was responsible, not the Germans.

I thought I read that memos from Beria to Stalin about executing the Polish officers at Katyn had been discovered?

(And I believe the Director of the great movie Katyn has them on his WWW site)
