Fifth Cable Cut, Iran Loses Net Connectivity
Slashdot ^ | 2/06/2008 | CmdrTaco

You may have noticed a number of stories recently about undersea cables getting cut around the world. Apparently the total is now up to 5, but the scariest part of this is that Iran is now offline. You can also read Schneier's comments on this coincidence.

Five cable cuts!!! It definitely has NSA hands all over it. I think that it's either to mess with Iran/OPEC's head, tit for tat over Iran's jeuvenile speed boat provocations, or it's a cover for our planting a combination eavesdropping and misinformation link into the line somewhere distant from the break on each line.

Tapping in is one thing--it can be done nondisruptively. Diverting the feed through a box than can selectively listen, disrupt, or deliver misinformation would require an outage on the line. So we cover it up by staging a break someplace else so they don't see our handiwork.

Iran has a submarine.

So does Israel. Several of them.

They are cutting cables, not tapping them.

They are cutting cables, not tapping them.

The cutting may be a diversion/interruption to cover up a tapping operation at a different location on the same cable (not by a major power, though, they wouldn't need to do that).

Good point. It makes sense to me. Interesting stuff. Regards

Sounds like someone is wanting to isolate some Al Queda extremists and make them use means other than the net for communicating.

Duh.

Sounds like we’re moving in on some big-time AQ operatives.
