Analysis:

On the first ballot 1,133 votes were cast.

On the second ballot 1,014 votes were cast.

The difference in total votes cast between the 1st and 2nd ballot was 119. I assume those not casting votes a second time around, either did not support either of the remaining candidates, or just remained uncommitted.

On the 2nd ballot Romney only gained 15 votes for a total of 475. Huckabee gained 149 for a total of 524. McCain lost 165 votes for a total net of 11. Ron Paul lost all of his 118 votes.

Paul’s voters from the 1st round may have largely sat out the 2nd round of voting.

Given the huge drop in support for McCain on the 2nd ballot, it seems the large switch to Huckabee was not neccessarily based on a “stalking horse” theory. I suspect most of those who supported McCain on the 1st ballot switched to Huckabee, since Pubbie voters in WV are strongly pro-life and are not comfortable with choosing a moderate Republican from Massachusetts.

It would be nice to hear from someone who was actually at the WV convention to see what their take on the voting might be.

“Man, if I did not know any better, I would say FR is morphing into DU.”

Most of FR recognize the dirty backroom dealing that is going on. It’s just the Huck supporters that can’t see it.

They’re blinded by the “win” no matter how they got it.

It’s laughable to me that people are STILL denying that Huck and McCain are one and the same now!

It is now official ... Huckabee is the stalking horse for John McCain.

Don't discredit stalking horses like that. There's a word that begins with 'W' that works better.

They have multiple rounds. The McCain people saw they weren’t winning, so in order to knock out Romney (the one they are afraid of), they went to Huckabee.

I’ve thought the same thing at times. Who would have ever thunk it? I bet JR never thought his conservative forum would become RINO CENTRAL. LOL!

Why can’t Mitt gives his delegates to Huckabee, (keeping McCain in check) in the states that he knows he will be in third?

Probably because the deal is that after the first ballot, the Huckleberry delegates will become McCain delegates (including the 18 from WV)

McCain has just proven that he is not a leader, rather a career Washington deal maker.

Bingo!

its becoming almost silly how everyone on this site is rallying around mitt romney,

77% percent of FR supports Romney. What's silly is that you're sticking around.

"But, it was a hit against McCain who lost all support on the second go 'round. "

It was a victory for McCain. Not that he would EVER stand a chance in a caucus attended by active, conservative Republicans, but (start McInsane voice) "he was ready for that". (End McInsane voice)

All he had to do was send his (fill in whatever you want) Huckabee to go win it for him and keep those delegates away from Romney.

(Start McInsane voice) "Piece of pie. Easy as cake." (End McInsane voice)

I am just sick of all the whining on these threads...

Oooooooh, The people chose to vote for Huckabee of their own free will, so it MUST be “collusion” and it’s a nasty liberal trick to not win with 40% of the vote th first time..

Waaaaahhhh!

Grow the Frak Up will ya already?!

Here’s how it worked:

ANYONE could CHOOSE to be a delegate and then RUN and WIN a spot.

Romney could NOT get more than 41% to like him.... nearly 60% did NOT like him...

So those 60% voted FOR someone else and AGAINST Romney.

HOW in the FRAK is that “Liberalism”?????!!!

Because at the Convention Huckabee will tell his delegates to vote for McCain, in exchange for something from McCain.

A brokered convention where a majority of the delegates are controlled by two people working together will lead to one or both of them being on the ticket.

It will NOT lead to a conservative savior.

You know, I was considering going along with McCain should he win the nomination. This kind of stuff does not make me more likely to vote for him.

Romney has serious problems with the red state base and those that support him better come to terms with that fact.

If you think Romney has serious problems with the red state base, just wait until the general and see how many of these red staters sit out their vote for McCain.

We are in a terrible mess. It looks like the best we can hope for is 2012, if there's anything left.

As I understand it from other reports, Mitt Romney was leading but lacked a majority, in the first round. However, McCain's people told their delegates to vote for Huckabee, and that put the Huckster over the top.

That's entirely legal. However, it smells like week-old crab shells in a dumpster in the sun in July behind Philip's Sea Food Restaurant in Ocean City. And believe you me, that is one powerful smell.

Yup. Huck has duped all his supporters. They don't know it yet but they're actually McCain supporters.

I’ll Write in Fred Thompson and send the message that I wont settle for a 20% Republican.

You can’t be conservative on one issue and a flat out liberal puke on others and expect to get my vote. Not ever!

Anti-gun = no vote ever and and that is but one of the many issues I have with Romney.
