(CNN) – Mitt Romney is backing away from a statement that seemed to denigrate former GOP presidential candidate Robert Dole, who wrote a letter to Rush Limbaugh yesterday defending the former Massachusetts governor’s main Republican rival, John McCain.
In a FOX interview Tuesday morning, Romney had said the former Kansas senator was “probably the last person I would have wanted to have write a letter for me.”

Goldwater was not a very charismatic candidate, he was completely unrelatable, and the emotional wave America was still riding in the wake of JFK's assassination militated greatly in LBJ's favor.
Goldwater lost by 23 points, and the main reason why he lost by such a wide margin is because he alienated Northeast and Midwest Republicans with his opposition to the Civil Rights Act.
I thought McCain was pretty dismissive of Senator Rick Santorum as somebody who “wasn’t reelected”. McCain can sure dish it out, but no one else is allowed to dis anyone if McCain doesn’t like it.
So I cannot make a comment to someone without pinging you. The man said the ad had a profound effect on the election and it did. Any inference other than that is in your own mind. But if you wish to argue with yourself carry on.
They all suck. Happy?! LOL Fact is, no one has refuted my points calling Romney an anti-conservative, phony, fraud and a liar. Attacking McCain is far too easy. Besides, we all know JohnnyMac`s maverick anti-conservatism. No reason to waste time on Huckabee either. He isn't gonna win.

That can be a good thing for a private person, but not for someone who aspires to higher office.
Still, McCain has made his share of remarks like this over the years.
Arguably we're still safer with Romney.
At the end of Dole's interview with Sean Hannity last night he said "My heart is with MeCain" , then went on to say he doesn't have a dog in this fight.
I take that as an endorsement, he didn't say his heart is with Romeny!

Once again. The “Daisy Ad” had no effect on the outcome of the 1964 election. If anything, Goldwater might have drawn some sympathy votes for that public attack. Otherwise the final outcome of LBJ`s landslide victory was solely based on Goldwater’s poor campaign and weak candidacy.
Regardless of Romney’s comment...for those of us whose battle issue is the Second Amendment...there were few worse than Bob Dole who sold us out in the past with “compromise”(like McCain).We aren’t talking “purism” here either.Dole’s SOP was “how much can I give away so that I look good”. Dole knows anything he writes to a public figure in a campaign can be published. It can be argued that “moderates” like the Doles have, on balance, done more harm than good to the party. Another good reason why moderate McCain needs to be defeated in November.
The strategy? Instead of going after the over 60 vote, they’ll diss them. How? By dissing the age of folks like 71 yo McCain and 84 yo Dole.

My response then? Well, then, you've just "confessed" that when the Romney camp says they need to play up the "generational" difference, they don't mean that at all! They're just using "generational" as a euphemism for skin tone, darker & more hair, cheek structure, & general attractiveness. Boy, is that desperation or what? Yes yes yes. That's what I can't understand. If Rush is trying to stick up for conservative principles why is he trying to palm off Romney on his listeners??? Because of expediency? Isn't he doing the same thing he accuses McCain supporters of doing, putting expediency above principle?

You are right, and rightly so! And Romney DID NOT say anything about Bob Dole that required any kind of apology! McCain can’t stand the fact that his using Dole’s letter backfired on him. There was no endorsement of McCain in the letter and Dole said he liked McCAin but was NOT endorsing anyone. He also said he was fond of Governor Romney.
McCain goes right to the “war hero” talk and you Bob Dole never waved his service around and around like McCAin does. And I respect McCain for his service, but as a candidate he sure is showing he lacks a great deal of character!
I have faith that the conservatives across America will realize that Mitt Romney is the best choice for the conservative cause. GO MITT!
I think I may be with you on that. Voting Democrat in November would have been unthinkable for me a few weeks ago. Now it is starting to look more like the least bad option. I believe the Republicans in congress would not hesitate to fight against Obama or Clinton but they would probably support McCain, allowing him to do more damage to the nation than either Democrat could. I never thought it would come down to this but it is looking more like it will.
We had a true-blue conservative military veteran running. We had our chance.
Yes, let's let the party choose. And then and the other 42% of American voters can cast their votes for McCain and we should have a grand 4 years.
Get out and support Huckabee, and hope for a brokered convention, where we have at least a sliver of a chance for a Fred or a Duncan. Stop McCain at all costs.
You're assuming your Huckabee delegates will not be immediately converted to McCain delegates at the convention. I have no such faith.
