The notion that a single television ad, aired once, won the election for LBJ is a sad excuse for a rational analysis of the 1964 election.

Goldwater was not a very charismatic candidate, he was completely unrelatable, and the emotional wave America was still riding in the wake of JFK's assassination militated greatly in LBJ's favor.

Goldwater lost by 23 points, and the main reason why he lost by such a wide margin is because he alienated Northeast and Midwest Republicans with his opposition to the Civil Rights Act.
