Berkeley to rethink its declaration against the Marines
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | February 4, 2008 | Carolyn Jones

(02-04) 18:52 PST Berkeley -- A week after blasting the Marines as "unwelcome intruders" in Berkeley, two city council members want the city to back off the declaration that ignited the wrath of the nation's right wing and inspired a Republican senator to try to sever Berkeley's federal funding.

Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli proposed today that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops.

The city council will vote on Olds' and Capitelli's two proposals at its Feb. 12 meeting.

"I think we shouldn't be seen across the country as hating the Marines," said Olds, who voted against last week's proposals. "If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."

Did you see where she’s going to take some homemade cookies to the Marine recruiting sergeants? LOL

It sure looked to me like most of those comments were from the Bay Area itself! Wow! Maybe there’s hope!

“Councilwoman Dona Spring said the council should not be cowed by the volume of hate mail and threats.

‘I still oppose the Marines recruiting in Berkeley because it’s one way of protesting this wasteful war,” she said. “Our military policy is a shambles. But we’re not in opposition to the Marines, we oppose the policy that directs the Marines.’”

How about following the law (and the USC) and find a different way to express your municipal feelings?

I see that Medea Benjamin has declared Berkeley to be a city of peace.

I take it that all the murders, rapes, robberies, muggings, car thefts, carjackings, burglaries and gang warfare have already been solved in the city?

If so, carry on, Ms. Benjamin.

The ONE very attractive aspect of Islam — is that folks like those who dominate in Berkeley - would be among the very first to be “eliminated”.....

The Soldier
It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag,
who serves under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Loss of business and convention dollars will add to the hurt Berkely is feeling.

Also someone anonymously sent Tickets to Hell to the Council Members. lol I think lefties truly believe that more of the American people feel like they do and they are always stunned when they discover we don’t.

So that is what their secret closed door meeting was all about tonite.

Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli on Monday proposed that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops.
The war is over, and they are liars. Declaring that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops is the same as saying they don't support the Troop's mission.

Therefore they are lying and they do NOT support the troops.

We cannot let up on them.

They gave carte blanche to code pink and encouraged them to do their evil on the streets of Berkeley at the Marine Recruiting Office.

And let that other group that chained themselves across the entrance break the law, and would not let their police enforce the law.

It took them 7.5 hours before they removed them.

They encouraged code pink to do their dirty work and spew their anti-military anti-American rhetoric at the Marine office with a parking space and a bullhorn!

They are backpedaling only because they know they overstepped their bounds and will lose money.

And are getting real Americans across this country to despise their despicable actions.

They did not "inadvertently" insult veterans, they hate the military and are doing a major CYA maneuver.

They need to clean up their town, and stop using the police and radical communist anti-American groups to do their wishes.

They are slick liars and need to be brought to account.

Their federal funding should still be removed.

Councilwoman Dona Spring said the council should not be cowed by the volume of hate mail and threats.

"I still oppose the Marines recruiting in Berkeley because it's one way of protesting this wasteful war," she said. "Our military policy is a shambles. But we're not in opposition to the Marines; we oppose the policy that directs the Marines."

A real thinker, this one. You don't oppose the Marines, you oppose the policy that directs them...Yet you take it out on the Marines. Lefty logic in all it's glory.

Gee, a new message on the Chamber of Commerce's website....

Berkeley Chamber of Commerce

The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce supports the men and women of our armed forces. We believe in a community where ALL voices can be heard.

The previous message I saw up a few days ago was a whine about the Chamber not being in control of the City Council.
