Huckabee: This is not a two-man GOP race
CBS News ^ | February 1, 2008 | Joy Lin

Posted on 02/01/2008 5:40:31 PM PST by Kurt Evans

Conservative, conservative, conservative. That was the word Mike Huckabee used again and again with reporters to emphasize his credibility as a contender for the Republican nomination...

“There has been somewhat of - almost a national media spin that this race is a two-man race,” said Huckabee... “Last night, the CNN debate was very frustrating for me. There seemed to be an unequal level of time that was allocated, and if people look at the delegate count, one has to have 1,191 delegates in order to be the nominee. So far, no one has even broken a hundred; there’s only 8% of the delegates that have yet been tabulated ..."

Continuing, Huckabee questioned Romney’s quest to claim the conservative mantle: “If people are looking for a true conservative, somebody who hasn’t had a recent change of opinion to become one, I would be the logical choice ..."

Although he would have “loved” to have Arnold Schwarzenegger’s endorsement, Huckabee seemed to undermine it by challenging the California governor’s conservative credentials, and implicitly, McCain’s.

“I would never have expected the governor of California to endorse me and, frankly, I’m probably a lot more conservative on a lot more issues than he would have been comfortable with – whether it’s the Second Amendment, or pro-life issue, or marriage amendment issue or any number of things.”

Huckabee later said that receiving former Republican candidate Duncan Hunter’s endorsement last week probably meant more in the conservative hotbed of San Diego than Schwarzenegger’s endorsement of McCain.

If anyone has questions about Huckabee’s wisdom, check out the story of the Wayne DuMond case. While Huckabee was Governor of Arkansas, he behind closed doors, possibly in violation of Arkansas’ FOIA law, engineered parole for Wayne DuMond, a convicted rapist, against the pleas of DuMond’s rape victims, female Arkansas legislators, and various law enforcement officials. After Dumond was paroled and forced to leave Arkansas, he moved to Missouri, where he committed one or two rapes and murders. Why was Huckabee so intent on releasing DuMond, and why did he go about it so secretly?

I don’t trust Huckabee.

..... but if Rush endorsed a candidate, he could probably be fined, locked up, disemboweled and dismembered because of McCain-Feingold.

READ BETWEEN THE LINES, HES ENDORSING ROMNEY.

...and Christ went to the house of the tax collector because that is where the lessons were needed.

What is the point of being redeemed if there is no point to redemption. Bless me father for I have sinned and all that jazz.

This is important considering the fact the NY State appellate court just imposed recognition of CANADIAN homosexual based marriages upon the state of NY.

This will have immigration impact.

With mccain as a 10 point front runner and Huckabee as a pointless dead ender, political reality may have to leave us with the converted vs the person claiming holy status of the pharasee in the front of the temple.

Huckabee’s son tortured and killed a dog, but the real crime is the cover-up.

Yeah, I think Rush is endorsing Romney now (in a limp-wristed sort of way).

Yeah, now that it doesn't matter.

Hunter did not have the impact of a fly on the windshield of this election. zip. He did not shift the debate. He did not register on the radar of the candidates as a credible competition.

If he had withdrawn with some grace he could have won points with his dignity instead of burning out like a star too faint to be noticed in the night sky.

Alas it might have beeen...

It is actually tradgic given his immigration stand.

“Romney is the only one who is consistantly attacked by the MSM.”

This is probably the worst possible argument I have ever heard for thinking someone is a conservative. Ann Coulter used this same argument, and now she's on the verge of supporting Hillary!

Think about it. The MSM knows that all these so-call conservative leaders are using this (retarded) gage. All they have to do is criticize the person they want to get the nomination.

If nominated, Romney will go down in flames.

Only god could stop abortion in Massachusetts.

A flaming meteorite the size of Manhattan, moving at the speed of sound, with a direct hit on the Kennedy compound would do it.

I don't think Mitt has that power.... oh well. ;)

BS, I call you on it.

Romney will win if he gets the nomination.

Romney is betting millions of his own money on it. Pretty confident I would say.

Since back in 2002, Romney has stated openly and honestly that he has changed his opinion on the issue of abortion. He admits that he was wrong to support a pro-choice position back then. Here is one of his more recent statements regarding the abortion issue:

“I am pro-life. I believe that abortion is the wrong choice except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the life of the mother. I wish the people of America agreed, and that the laws of our nation could reflect that view. But while the nation remains so divided over abortion, I believe that the states, through the democratic process, should determine their own abortion laws and not have them dictated by judicial mandate.”

- Governor Romney, Boston Globe, Op-Ed, July 26, 2005

As I remember, one of our greatest presidents, President Reagan, had a more liberal view of abortion before he saw the light too.

Who is this “we” you are talking about? That “we” didn’t defeat anyone. Voters were snookered out of their vote by the Huckster! A vote for HuckADOODLE is a vote for McCain and McCain won’t win next November!

It's not that they didn't endorse Thompson that bothers me. It's that they've all been pushing this absolute fraud, Romney! All the while saying, "I don't endorse candidates during the primaries". They lump Huckabee and McCain in the same group as Hillary and Obama, and include Romney in every list of conservatives. They give him a complete pass. Don't think it's not intentional.

What REALLY bothers me is that so many people on FR have drank the cool aid.

Mitt has gone too far. He was Governor of Taxachussets and failed to convince Barny Frank that ... well... an exit ramp is an exit ramp! No wonder the big dig got so screwed up!!

“If WE really had an impact, a REAL impact then Hunter or Thompson would have been far more than a fizzel.”

Senator Thompson was pushing 30 percent nationwide when he announced his candidacy. Free Republic isn’t responsible for his lack of charisma, his support for McCain-Feingold, or his unrepudiated opposition to state laws banning abortion (post #2):

http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1957398/posts?page=2#2

“Split the libertarians with kook paul.”

I’m opposed to unconditional withdrawal from Iraq, but Congressman Paul isn’t a kook.

“Now when this is in fact a two man race, the only reason for Huckabee to stay in is for personal power.”

This isn’t “in fact” a two-man race. Fewer than 10 percent of the delegates have been allocated. Stop spinning.

no when thompson was in it was clear as crystal he was directing people towards thompson.

you are not listening regularly.

If he is explicitly hitting mccain and giuliani and doing process of elimination then you are left with a logical conclsion.

It is not his job to think for you.
