McCain win would signal a divorce and a revolution
Washington Post via Houston Chronicle ^ | January 31, 2008 | By E.J. DIONNE JR.

If John McCain secures the Republican presidential nomination, his victory would signal a revolution in American politics — a divorce, after a 28-year marriage, between the Republican and conservative establishments.

McCain would be the first Republican nominee since Gerald Ford in 1976 to win despite opposition from organized conservatism, and also the first whose base in Republican primaries rested on the party's center and its dwindling left. McCain is winning despite conservatives, not because of them.

Does the Post realize that if the base isn’t behind you, you will lose like George McGovern in 1972?

As far as I’m concerned, it’s already happened. It happened when Hunter & Thompson dropped out.

The only ones left are libs, no matter how many Freepers want to justify Romney or Huck. THEY ARE LIBS.

The GOP is toast. Time for something new.

The GOP has been incrementally divorcing itself from Conservatism for many years by appealing to people who are not Conservative as to expand the voter base for the sole purpose of winning elections. The current crop of GOP candidates is a perfect example of this trend. Attracting Socialists to the party to win an election is a losing strategy.

If McCain is the nominee, Democrats will have plenty of ammunition to persuade middle-of-the-road voters that he is not a moderate.

Another fallacy. Moderate/middle of the road is a euphemistic term for Socialist.

His straight talk took a crooked path when he repeatedly refused to say whether he would now vote for his own immigration bill

Wait untill you see the path McCain will lead us all down........it constantly forks to the left.

The real straight talk A petty, vindictive man feels he's owed and entitled to lead the Free World. I f you think he's a bit crazy now, wait until he truly is president, then you'll see what a nut he really is. The man is not stable.

We (the conservatives) never married the pubbies. We were only dating but didn’t fully trust ‘em. However, if McCain is the nominee, we will break up for a good long while.

“McCain would be the first Republican nominee since Gerald Ford in 1976 to win despite opposition from organized conservatism”

‘Disorganised conservatism’ would be a better description of the opposition McCain has faced. That’s probably part of the problem.

I could picture the first Mclame/Hillary debate when they’re arguing politely in front of the camera who has the biggest sewer mouth.

Gerald Ford was never elected President. He was foisted upon the Republicans as an appeasement candidate following Nixon’s presidency.

You are right. I was listening to Hannity the other day, he was railing a caller because the caller said he would not vote for any of the candidates. All Hannity could talk about was winning and maybe conservatives were the problem because they won’t modernize. Turned it off and I will NEVER listen or watch him again.

You should have kept listening. It was just a sarcastic one hour gimmick to get folks riled up. It worked.
