Seven good reasons to support Mike Huckabee [be sure to read reason number seven]
The dark and jumbled recesses of my aging feeble brain | January 31, 2008 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 01/31/2008 2:09:25 PM PST by Jim Robinson

My friends, I have to admit that I've been in a bit of a quandary since the Real Conservatives ® Thompson and Hunter dropped out of the race leaving us to to place our bets on one the four headless horsemen. But after having a day or three to sort it all out, I'm beginning to see a ray of hope.

Number one, my worst fear that the pro-abortion, pro-gay, anti-gun social liberal Rudy Giuliani might be nominated, and thereby bring an abrupt and unholy end to the pro-life conservative movement within the GOP has been allayed. His evil culture of death platform has been soundly rejected by the Republican voters. Thank God! If nothing else is gained, that alone is a huge victory for us!

And that leaves us with the unwelcome slippery task of having to determine and select the least evil of the three remaining RINOs. But wait! When choosing between evils, why not choose the good?

McCain is insane and there are many good reasons not to choose him, but I'll list just five: McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, the Keating 5, and the Gang of 14. No thanks. McCain is out!

Romney ran on a pro-abortion platform, is pro gay rights, is prone to BIG government solutions, promises anything to anyone for a vote, and flip-flops on important issues. Can't trust him.

Now Governor Huckabee. Could this be the good vs evil? He's a Baptist minister. A genuine 100% pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, Southron Christian social conservative!

And that would be my reason no. 1 to support Huckabee. He has the trust and backing of the Christian evangelicals and the support of the Bible Belt. You cannot win the presidency without the South, and I believe the pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, pro-America Mike Huckabee is the most likely of the three GOP hopefuls to carry the South. And that's a pretty darn good reason!

My number two reason is that he is NOT McCain (and that's a pretty darn good reason too).

Number three (and this will be a tough one for a lot of my FReeper Friends) is that he is NOT Romney.

Numbers four and five are he's NOT Hillary and NOT Obama. Oohrah!

Number six, he plays a mean bass and he's a traditional favorite at Free Republic's infamous quadrennial Inaugural Balls in Washington, DC. Perhaps we could persuade President Huckabee to drop by our ball and perform his rocking rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama!" Now, wouldn't that be a hoot!

Number seven, if we can keep Huckabee in the race all the way through, thus preventing McCain or Romney from gaining enough delegates to win the nomination, then maybe, just maybe a deadlocked convention might seek out another candidate. One who can re-unite the Reagan Coalition, save the GOP, and put us back on the conservative track. Of course, my personal favorite to be that man would be FRed Thompson.

Woo hoo!!

Let it ring out through grassroots America and on to the convention! Support life! Support the GOP! Support Huckabee! And re-draft FRed Thompson!!

Never give in, never give up, and never lose hope.

Long live the Reagan Revolution!

it is a pipedream. There will NOT be a deadlocked or brokered convention.

Of course it's a pipe dream. It's a pleasant one, though.

About your defense voting conservative family, it is looking like we have been focusing on individual issues such as defense, social issues, financial and gun rights, but we have lost track of the first consideration which is the Constitution.

The Constitution says that the states have the power- not Washington. What has happened? Look back to what the Founding Fathers have said and you have to admit that the government we have today is the Founding Fathers’ worst nightmare. I think we have to get back to the federalist vision which put power in the states and not Washington.

If you look at many of the problems that plague us, you can trace it back to an all powerful federal government which has been growing since the Roosevelt administration in the nineteen thirties! The liberals take three steps forward and the conservatives take one step back. With each administration, Washington gets bigger and bigger.

The liberals always aim for the top ...Washington. If power were not so concentrated in Washington, it would make it much more difficult for the liberals to complete their agenda.

I think we all have to get to our libraries and start learning more about the Constitution and the founding of our country. When we do this, we will realize that we are very far from what our country was supposed to be. When conservatives start to focus on dis-empowering Washington and re-empowering the states, then we will see many of the toxic liberal policies fall by the wayside.

Look at all the things Washington has been enpowering for seventy years: one entitlement program after another, huge government housing programs, welfare programs that subsidize family break up and illegitimacy, federal government interference in our local school systems, big government looking over your shoulder on the job, massive debt and taxes, taxes taxes.

We have to work for all the conservative issues but we also need to start redesigning government at the local and state levels. In order to do this, we have to stop accepting pork from Washington which is what keeps our money going to Washington. I think we cannot cut federal taxes until we refuse the pork, all the unnecessary spending; the bicycle paths, the needless museums, money for local schools, the bridges to nowhere. Taxation starts with bribes. They bribe us with all of these pork barrel projects then they send us the bill on April 15th.

When people at the local levels realize that we don’t need all that money from Washington, then we will start sending people to Washington who are fiscally conservative, people who will represent the interests of their states, not the interests of Washington.

When we stop accepting the pork from Washington much of the power of the liberals will fall away.

Surely you do not expect those paying (on proportion) only a small percentage of the tax dollars to reject the bribes offered by the panderers but paid by the small minority paying the vast majority of the tax dollars? We've already arrived at the stage where the populace can vote in (and frankly, looking at the democrat voter rolls, already are doing it insidiously) the one who will dole out to them the most and extort that dole from the small minority paying the vast majority of the money into the tax coffers.

How conservative of you to want me to pay for your healthcare so you can retire early. Do you want to vote to have me buy you a car, also?

If you insist.

If McCain gets in office, conservatism will be dead anyway. Or pretty dormant.

In the big picture view of how either McCain or Hillary or Obama will ruin in nation, we will all be paying huge tax increases and we'll be supporting all the newly legal illegals and paying for their healthcare (just as we are paying for that now anyway). Those still working and earning decent money will be paying a fortune to support the rest. The EIC will likely be expanded, as well all of the other big government giveaway programs. And you're worried about one person's healthcare - someone who has likely paid more in taxes in one year than most people earn. You ought to be mad at the people you are currently not only supporting through welfare or SSI, paying for their foodstamps, paying for their children's school, and paying for their healthcare. And it's a 'gift' that keeps on giving because you'll be doing the same for their many offspring.

McHillama will be expanding that and costing you (and me) more and more and more. It's not unreasonable for those punished the most through taxation to decide to quit being used eventually. I would've much rather had a conservative president, but if the GOP voters pick McCain - I'm only going with the choices given to me and which one will better my life. The country will be toast either way. And with a Dem elected, the GOP has a chance (although a teeny tiny one) to realize they took the wrong path. Yet again.

(Oh, BTW, just to make you feel better, I’ll still be paying tens of thousands in taxes on my retirement and investment income. I would be funding my own health care with those taxes, no matter how much the cost might be inflated with big government socialized medicine. I’ve also paid into SS at the max rate for years - but won’t get one penny back. So there’s no need to feel like I’m costing YOU a thing. I am and always will be at a huge net loss as far as government taxes vs. government benefits go. There’s not that many that can say that, even here, if they take into account local, state - including education of their children, and government benefits over the entire course of their lives.)

Jim,

I’ve been thinking all day about your post. There’s a good reason to not vote for Huckabee. That reason is that he simply won’t win the nomination. It’s a quixotic campaign at this point. Voting for him will allow McCain to maintain the momentum he has. Momentum is the important thing here.

I want a brokered convention as much as you do. I want to see RINO lip prints on conservative booty! That’s not going to happen if McCain can maintain his momentum. We have to knock him off course. A few Romney victories on Tuesday will do that. Splitting the conservative vote between Romney and Huckabee will leave McCain as the last man standing.

My advice is that we all be Romney guys come Tuesday. If he does really well, then we become Huckabee guys for the next round of primaries and kill Romney’s momentum! Who knows? Maybe we’ll have to be McCain guys for a week before it’s all through. But right now, the best bet for reversing the campaign’s inertia is to go with Romney and against McCain.

I have no doubt that you pay enough taxes to cover HillaryCare, or at least you’ll be told to do so.

It’s nearly impossible to kill a government program once it’s created.

Once we go down the path to socialized medicine, I don’t think there’s any turning back. We’ll kill the pharmaceutical industry and kill millions. Our own health care will suffer.

But since it’s FREE, sign me up!

At this point, there is no turning back. Perhaps the way to turn back the clock is to let the glutton eat until his excessive weight brings on a heart attack and he dies.

If there is a depression of 20’s proportions, then someone will have to build from the ashes.

“So, a candidate needs not just more delegates than another candidate,”

Do you understand the term “half plus”

No, a candidate has to have over half. They do not win the nomination with 49% of the vote or less. They do not win if they have exactly half the vote. They have to have half plus at least 1 vote. Majority does not mean more than someone else, it means more than everyone else combined.

I wish there would be a movement that people would start talking about living within their local government’s budgets so that they would not have to take money from Washington. That is what we used to do. Washington is really pulling a scam on us because they are only using OUR money. The wealth is in the fifty states not in Washington DC which has no gnp. Washington DC is just a small city with no industries or natural resources. The only money Washington gets is from us. The states are the true source of the wealth of this nation yet billions of our dollars are drained by Washington.

We need to talk about these things on a local level and start a movement. Only when people’s awareness is improved will they change their voting habits.

The churches are a great way to inform people. Why couldn’t there be citizens’ newsletters passed out at the churches to keep people informed on issues? The majority of the people are not very well informed but they think they are because they watch the news on tv and read their local newspaper. There is so much they need to know and will not know because the electronic and print media are so watered down and are basically about advertising dollars.

We need a grassroots movement which is not tied to political parties. The parties have become about self interest not about what is good for the country. We need to talk to each other in this way and make people see that the country is being run by two self interested party machines who keep deceiving us with platitudes.

First of all, ignore my last reply to you. I miss read what you wrote.

Second, “From what I’ve looked up about how delegates work, if a candidate exists the race AND endorses another, their delegates will more than likely go to the person endorses.”

You bring up an interesting question regarding delegates for those who have dropped out of the race. I am not sure that those delegates have to vote for who was endorsed, but I am not sure they are free to choose for themselves either.

Does anyone know the answer to how the delegates for candidates who have already dropped out can or must vote? Are they forced to vote for who their candidate endorsed?

I agree with you Jim! It's worth a try. I don't really care for any of the three but we are going to have to back one of them to keep the beast out of the White House again, so I'll vote for Huckabee. I don't think he can beat Hillary, or, Obama though, but at this point, what do we have to lose? I'm more afraid of McCain becoming the GOP candidate than I am of Huckabee. He does have those good qualities that you mentioned.

forward to my dear husband Don-o,

I have had a moment of clarity (my wife has told me what to do)

The immediate goal is to stop McCain and MikeaHuck is our only viable option. Funny, our 18 year old will be voting in his first on Tuesday. He told me at first he was leaning Huckabee; then he went undecided. Most recently, he has asked me who he should vote for (and why.)

So, here's three votes in the Tennessee First Congressional for a pawn in the game.
