Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Wednesday he has no intention of following Rudy Giuliani's planned exit from the GOP race and he dismissed suggestions that his candidacy could split the conservative vote and help rival Sen. John McCain.
With a narrowing Republican field, Huckabee could draw votes from Mitt Romney because of his strong support among the religious right - a possible boost for McCain.
"If the true conservatives are looking for a true conservative, they'll pick me. Romney's record is not a conservative record, his rhetoric is not conservative, even with what he's said and done," Huckabee said.
Huckabee surprised by winning the Iowa caucus, but has little money and finished a distant fourth in Florida.
The former Arkansas governor and Baptist preacher was in Newport Beach for a fundraiser at a supporter's home before traveling to Los Angeles for an Americans of Faith event and to Simi Valley for the GOP presidential debate.
Huckabee also pledged not to drop out of the race, despite his poor showing in recent primaries. He said he would focus his campaign on Southern states that are slated for the Tuesday round of primaries.
"Those are all states where we believe we are not only in play, but we are poised to win," he said.
"This boy isn't on the ropes. There's a saying in the South: 'It ain't the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog,'" Huckabee said.
His morning fundraiser in Newport Beach netted more than $100,000, according to organizers.
"Our campaign is so frugal we could go a month on that," Huckabee quipped to about 200 boisterous supporters and volunteers.
Huckabee also was schedule to attend a dinner fundraiser in Thousand Oaks.
Best. Comeback. Ever.
McCain is probably directing some of his donors who are maxed out to donate to Huckabee.
You damn right about running for VP, Huck’s got his head so far up McCain’s ass, that even preparation-H won’t help

Uh . . . make that ‘06.
Up with my daughter last night. Croup.
I have cousins and uncles named Willard . Willards do not make fun of other's names on purpose .
He’s McCain’s b*tch and he’s really starting to like it.
They were still deluded into thinking Fred would win.
I read today that Huckabee raised overall taxes in 10 years in Arkansas from 30.2 to 30.4% . . . big deal there. As opposed to Romney who raised taxes for his state by 4% total. It’s a bunch of bogus attacks on Huckabee.
How many times are you going to post this piece of crap?
“Funny how all of Hucks verbal shots are directed at Romney and none at the frontrunner McCain. Hmmm, seems like an odd way to stay in the race...”
Exactly the way I’m thinking. McQueeg and the Huck are playing tag team against Mitt.
How did he get re-elected? Easy. It’s the same state that elected Bill Clinton three times, the populace is a bunch of idiots.
AP - Romney can't be written off, not with millions of dollars in his personal bank account and an issue the economy that should resonate. But exit polls suggest that McCain has figured out how to beat the former Massachusetts governor.
... If money can buy an election, the former Massachusetts governor has enough to pay the tab. Just as important, Romney is comfortable talking about the economy (McCain is not) and is not a creature of Washington (McCain is).
You guys are funny! Huckabee is working for McCain. The McCain that he almost beat in S.Carolina (was Romney working for McCain to deny Huckabee the win there?). Dorks! All around me dorks, and not a dork to drink.
I understand you might like the guy but please, Huckabee is not and never was a conservative. His Christian Socialist bent is frightening. His nanny state, pro-criminal, pro-illegals, positions are left of Hillary. His ethics appear to be sorely challenged. He has run probably the dirtiest campaign of all the Republican candidates.
Promote him all you want, but don't insult us by calling him a conservative.
“I didn’t raise taxes, I raised hope!”
Mike Huckabee just wants to help John McCain beat up on Mitt Romney and then be seriously considered either as McCain’s V.P. choice or part of a McCain administration in another position(as if McCain is really going to win).

The total tax burden in Arkansas went from 30.3 percent in 1996 when Huckabee took office all the way up to (are you ready?) 30.5 percent in 2006 right before he left. Thats right, folks. Under the big government guy, the overall tax burden rose by two-tenths of a percent in 10 years. If you meet any Republican politician who can hold a Democratic state legislature to raising the tax burden by only two-tenths in 10 years, make him president, would you? ...
By the same measure of overall tax burden, and from the same source for information, Romney oversaw an increase from 30.4 percent to a whopping 34.4 percent total tax burden on the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts... Four percent in four years (all while Bush was president), versus two-tenths in 10 years during Clinton and Bush presidencies.
Huckabee gets negative press for the sales tax going up in a state with a balanced budget amendment. I have much less issue sales taxes esp at the state level then I do with income taxes, as sales taxes are voluntary and income taxes are not. Taxing work/productivity/income is evil. Income taxes/property taxes/estate taxes are central the tenants of marxism, sales taxes are not.
Huckabees positives on taxes:
That is not a socialist.
He lost me with the "I didn't raise taxes, I raised hope" statement. And then there was the eastern corridor highway to solve our economic mess. Sheesh! He is engaging and funny but the joke would be on us if he were elected.
Doing for HIMSELF is no mark of leadership. He singularly FAILED to increase the Republican party's numbers in the state, contrasting with virtually every single solitary other Southern state. In fact, from the time he was elected Governor after his ascension in 1996, the AR GOP had HALF the federal delegation. Today it has ONE seat. The same one it had back when Winthrop, Sr. and Footsie Britt made a breakthrough FORTY years ago. The party in the legislature under HIS leadership failed to make gains after the late '90s and has been SHRINKING in every successive election since. Absolutely failed leadership. He is the Southern Romney, who buried his state's party in MA. Both colossal incompetent RINOs that were a gift to the Democrat party. Both MA and AR have 100% statewide occupation by rodents. 100%. Not even Hawaii, Vermont and Rhode Island are that absent of statewide Republicans.
