Why I vetoed contraception bill (Reminder Distortion out portion)
Boston Globe ^ | July 26, 2005 | By Mitt Romney

Posted on 01/30/2008 8:01:49 AM PST by restornu

| YESTERDAY I vetoed a bill that the Legislature forwarded to my desk.....

Signing such a measure into law would violate the promise I made to the citizens of Massachusetts when I ran for governor. I pledged that I would not change our abortion laws either It disregards not only the seriousness of abortion but the importance of parental involvement and so would weaken a protection I am committed to uphold..

I understand that my views on laws governing abortion set me in the minority in our Commonwealth. I am prolife. I believe that abortion is the wrong choice except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the life of the mother..

Because Massachusetts is decidedly prochoice, I have respected the state's democratically held view. I have not attempted to impose my own views on ...

For all the conflicting views on this issue, it speaks well of our country that we recognize abortion as a problem. The law may call it a right, but no one ever called it a good, and, in the quiet of conscience people of both political parties know that more than a million abortions a year cannot be squared with the good heart of America.

You can't be a prolife governor in a prochoice state without understanding that...

At the same time, the starting point should be the innocence and vulnerability of the child waiting to be born...

In some respects, these convictions have evolved and deepened during my time as governor...

I have also observed the bitterness and fierce anger that still linger 32 years after Roe v. Wade...

Above all, those who wrote our Constitution would wonder why the federal courts had peremptorily removed the matter from the authority of the elected branches of government...

Mitt Romney is governor of Massachusetts.

Several actions, but not every action. More pro-life is not AT ALL the ame as Pro-life. This discussion wasn’t about other candidates it was an attempt to, again, whitewash Mitt as something he isn’t.

He isn’t honest about himself, his supporters aren’t honest about him. Yes. I just accused you of being dishonest about Mitt and deceptive about his record. I apologize for being blunt but Mittbots deserve it.

You are wrong. You are the one being dishonest. Romney did a lot to fight against the liberal tide in Massachusetts. He’s received the endorsement of pro-life groups in Massachusetts since 1994 and he received accolades and awards for his assistance in the cause to promote a culture of life while in office. It may have only been in 99% of his actions instead of 100%, but it is far better than you will get from anyone else still in the race. To remain in Fantasyland is ridiculous. Perfection is the enemy of the very good.

I’m not even going to argue wrt other candidates, they all suck. However calling me dishonest when there’s a ton of documented facts that Romney is simply pro-life for political convenience makes you positively ignorant!

This thread is about the LIE that Mitt is a pro-life conservative. Its proven that he isn’t.

You may never be satisfied with his efforts, but many pro-life leaders who actually know him and who have worked with him are.

Eight prominent leaders of pro-life and pro-family groups in Massachusetts wrote an open letter on January 11, 2007 praising Gov. Romney for his leadership and accomplishments in these important issues and attesting to his commitment to the pro-life and pro-family causes. (This letter is a MUST READ).

Excerpt:
"Since well before 2003, we have been laboring in the trenches of Massachusetts, fighting for the family values you and we share. It is difficult work indeed – not for the faint of heart. In this challenging environment, Governor Romney has proven that he shares our values, as well as our determination to protect them.

"For four years, Governor Romney has been right there beside us, providing leadership on key issues – whether it was politically expedient to do so or not. He has stood on principle, and we have benefited greatly from having him with us.

"It is clear that Governor Romney has learned much since 1994 – to the benefit of our movement and our Commonwealth. In fact, the entire nation has benefited from his socially conservative, pro-family actions in office. As we explained earlier, his leadership on the marriage issue helped prevent our nation from being plunged into even worse legal turmoil following the court decision that forced “gay marriage” upon our Commonwealth.

"For that our country ought to be thankful. We certainly are.

Massachusetts Citizens for Life gave Governor Romney their 2007 Mullins Award for Outstanding Political Leadership recognizing him for consistently seeking to advance the pro-life cause while in office. The award was presented at the MCFL Mother's Day Pioneer Valley Dinner where Gov. Romney delivered the keynote speech.

Massachusetts Citizens For Life Executive Director Marie Sturgis: "Having Governor Romney in the corner office for the last four years has been one of the strongest assets the pro-life movement has had in Massachusetts." (Kathryn Jean Lopez, "An Early Massachusetts Primary," National Review Online, 1/10/2007)

Massachusetts Citizens For Life Pioneer Valley Chapter Chairman Kevin Jourdain: "Mitt Romney was a great Governor, who served with honor and distinction. But most importantly, he was a pro-life Governor. He vetoed a number of pro-abortion pieces of legislation and made many pro-life appointments. He was always there for us." (Kevin Jourdain, Remarks at Massachusetts Citizens for Life Mother's Day Pioneer Valley Dinner, Agawam, MA, 5/10/2007

I really think Jim has said all that needs to be said about this on the thread above. His pertinent comments start with post #58 which I’ve linked and he clarifies following several others.

This is Mitts crime. NO man of character uses abortion to further his personal aspirations. He lied to the people of Mass or he lying now or both. And I won’t believe he’s changed no matter how many endorsements you post claimong otherwise. He has shown his character and it is Clintonesqe to say the least.

Your arrogance is stunning. Who are you to judge? Who are you to see into a man's heart, especially a man you don't even know and have never met?

The audacity of your claim is truly flooring given how much you really don't know.

Pro-life leaders who DO know him and HAVE met him TRUST HIM.

For heaven's sake, THE MAN WHO WROTE THE HUMAN LIFE AMENDMENT FOR THE GOP PLATFORM, Jim Bopp, has endorsed Mitt. He has met him, spoken to him and worked beside him. Do you think Jim Bopp isn't serious about furthering the pro-life cause? Do you think you are more perspicacious in your assessments or more dedicated in your commitment to the cause than Bopp, who has dedicated his whole life to it?

How about Dr. Wilke, credited as being the father of the ENTIRE pro-life movement? He has endorsed Mitt too. Do you know better than him as well? He has also spent time with Mitt, thoroughly researched his record and platform and finds him sincere and trustworthy as well.

_______________________

Governor Romney has received the important endorsement of James Bopp, Jr., a nationally-known constitutional lawyer and leading advocate for the pro-life movement. James Bopp reviewed Romney's record as Governor and questioned him personally before giving Romney his endorsement. Bopp later joined the Romney Presidential campaign as a special adviser on life issues, an unpaid position.
(James Bopp Jr., "The Best Choice Is Also a Good Choice - Why social conservatives should support Mitt Romney for president," National Review Online, 2/21/2007)

Dr. John Willke, a Founder of the Pro-Life Movement Nationally and Internationally, Served for 10 Years as President of The National Right To Life Committee and Helped Found the Organization Endorseed Mitt Romney: "Unlike other candidates who only speak to the importance of confronting the major social issues of the day, Governor Romney has a record of action in defending life. Every decision he made as Governor was on the side of life. I know he will be the strong pro-life President we need in the White House. Governor Romney is the only candidate who can lead our pro-life and pro-family conservative movement to victory in 2008."

I might not be as smart as you are, but I am smart enough to know when to defer to credible people who have met Mitt, who have assessed his credbility and sincerity, and who are much more informed on an issue than I am. Your arrogance is stunning.

You have to exercise some judgement. A few cells are not yet an “innocent baby”. As for the rest of it, I think the best way to reply to someone of your mentality is to point out that human beings - generally - are pretty disgusting creatures.

I guess I wasn’t clear enough. Endorsements don’t mean jack! Actions ALWAYS show the character of a man. I don’t care if he “changed his mind”. That makes me ask what kind of principled man thinks its ever ok to kill an unborn child? Ok so he MAY HAVE learned that lesson, but he obviously wasn’t raised right, he IS a former MASS governor and he’s admitted that his staunch conservative positions have only recently (10 years) became convictions. I don’t even want to mention his religion, but at risk of being called a bigot I will to question HOW a man can be a Bishop and hold any sense that abortion is ok in any way.

That’s NOT a man of charachter! now please quit trying to ram this repugnant dirtbag down my throat or things will get rule breaking personal “up in here”.

we’re talking massachusetts now, try getting anone conservative or republican there.

I lived there for a bit and was there under Romney and believe me he was always fighting the liberals especially the legislature.

He also told the state police to go after illegals, stopped illegals getting free tuition etc etc

You have to exercise some judgement.

I have. You pretend to be concerned about over population and unwanted babies, but what have you, personally, sacrificed to address those issues? Very doubtful you've sacrificed a thing. You'd rather sacrifice innocent babies.

McCain is consistently pro-life on abortion.
*****************************************************
I think it would be better to say that McCain is PUBLICLY pro-life ... behind the scenes he has worked tirelessly to keep pro-life legislation from coming to a vote or even out of comittee,, he is the epitome of a Washington insider playing the “How can we fool them today” game... He isn’t fooling me or most of the people here.

I will simply say that I find Romney far more believable on this issue, than I do McClinton on anything.

You did a real good job RG don't pay any mind to these verbal repugnant bores who think they are God when they are nothing in a sea of many fallen men!

It makes me wonder what "Damn spot they are trying to erase from their life" for some I bet it could be more than ancient political verbal rhetoric

John 8
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

Its pretty sad that you must pretend that calling a man out for his actions, is the same thing as a death sentence by stoning.

But I’ve seen it from Mitt backers since July. At least you didn’t call me a bigot this time.

Mitt won’t get my vote no matter how much you toss biblical reference around. Nor will you be able to stifle my opposition to his candidacy.

The man is NOT what he claims to be. I couldve respected him for what he is if he and his followers had been truthful about it.

You say you've exercised judgement but you can't tell the difference between a few cells and a living baby, you refuse to recognize the reality and consequences of overpopulation, and you haven't dealt with unwanted pregnancies at all.

Any decent reading of history shows humanity has been constantly at war - the causes being jealosy and greed, that in wartime people are slaughtered indiscrimately - men, women, children, babies, it doesn't matter, and the winners always - miraculously - find that they acted justly in response to unreasonable provocation, and that God, history, whatever, were and are on their side.

Meanwhile, Malthus and Ehrlich are reviled and ridiculed as alarmists who've not adequately accounted for the miracles of science while their detractors never notice the rate at which the natural world has been, and continues to be, destroyed.

As for me, personally, I've tried all my life to leave as small a "footprint" as possible and done what I could to educate the young on the beauties of nature and the necessity of preserving it. I don't think I would call that a "sacrifice" nor do I give any more value to your opinion of me than I give to your "morality"; zero, in fact.

Sure I can. The difference is the same between that of a neonate and a toddler - growth and development. The unborn child is fully human from the moment of conception.

Anyone who tries to claim otherwise is simply trying to justify murder. Hitler tried to claim the Jews were less than human. The KKK tried to claim blacks are less than human. There is no difference between them and those who try to claim unborn children are less than human.
