In a highly partisan Spanish language response to President Bush's State of the Union last night, San Antonio State Senator Leticia Van de Putte blasted 'the anger of the far right' in a scathing criticism of opposition by many citizens which led to the defeat of the immigration reform bill which included amnesty for illegal aliens.
"Senate Democrats fought to reach a compromise bipartisan immigration reform bill and brought it up for a vote three times, but were blocked by the anger of the far right," Van de Putte said in her eight minute Spanish language rebuttal.
Interestingly, the English language rebuttal delivered by Kansas Governor Kathleen Sibelius was far less strident, and didn't mention immigration at all.
"Republicans prefer to use immigration as a campaign issue, rather than actually address it," Van de Putte said in Spanish.
She also criticized the failure of Congress to approve so called DREAM Act, which would have granted several benefits to the children of illegal immigrants, including, in one version, in state college tuition.
"This is critical for immigrant children who grew up in America to achieve the American dream," Van de Putte told her Spanish language audience.
Van de Putte accused President Bush of 'allowing extremists to dominate the rhetoric on immigration, disrespecting our rich history, and the contributions immigrants have made in strengthening our country."
The rest of Van de Putte's remarks in Spanish were no less fiery, laying the blame for numerous sins at the door of President Bush, including financial setbacks and a lack of spending money.
"Under President Bush, Latinos have suffered from stagnating incomes, in fact, the average wage for Latinos has actually declined."
President Bush picked up a record 44% of Hispanic votes in the 200 election, but the loyalty of Hispanic voters is now slipping back to the Democrats, and the Latino vote is expected to decide several key states in the November election, including California and Texas.
Van de Putte is a fiery Democratic Party partisan. She led the famous 45 day Democratic walkout of the Legislature in 2003 to protest a Republican backed redistricting plan.
Ping!
Leticia Van de Puta is an idiot.
“They all call her ‘puta’ cuz’ no one really knows her name...”
We didn’t stop illegal immigration when we had the chance. Now, the hispanic vote and black vote combined with the GOP’s insistence on being dem-lite will ensure permanent minority status for the GOP.
Want to see Latino incomes rise? Get rid of all their illegal competition. Some of these Liberals are just too easy.
She’s a Dingbat.
San Antonio ought to be embrassed to have her as a State Senator.
Their simple-mindedness is just something to behold. Especially when they continuously tell the world how smart and “nuanced” they are.
Leticia Van de Putz
Not so long ago these words were being used to describe the demoncrats. Politics is a fickle business. We conservatives will be back, I promise.
In this instance, eighty per cent of America are on the “far right.”
Someone please tell this bimbo that this is a representative government and THAT”S how we address issues.
Our politicians care more about the rights of illegal aliens than they do the rights of American citizens. That might make someone angry.
I believe the opposition to amnesty has been, for the most part, reasoned. It’s the advocates of amnesty who are angry and irrational, accusing the opponents of racism. What’s more, the advocates are anxious to portray illegals as poor little victims who should be treated with the utmost sympathy.
Citizens of this country shouldn’t be expected to subsidize illegal immigration. And every country in the World that is capable of controlling it’s borders, does so. And there is nothing racist or hostile about controlling borders.
Gator: ding-ding-ding-ding! We have a winner!
Speaking for myself and not all of San Antonio, I was VERY embarrassed the way she took off like that [ref last paragraph of story.] That was a HUGE waste of state money!
‘Puta,’ indeed!
Nuanced always reminds me of John Kerry. I believe it is a French word for numbnuts.
I lived in San Antonio 1998-2001...it was embarrassing.
They all call her puta cuz no one really knows her name...
Puta is Spanish for, how shall we say it so as to avoid offending anyone, a “woman of ill-repute.
Van de Putte ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
‘the anger of the far right’
We’re not really angry yet, Senora Putte. We just turned our attention to this problemo on Mayo 1, 2006 when your people “came out of the shadows” waving your flag, and demanding that we ignore our own laws, that we provide you with free educations, medical care, `three hots & a cot’ and so forth . . .
