Mugshot released of Boy Scout leader accused of sending porn to 14-year-old

ELGIN, SC (WIS) - An Elgin man is under arrest after officials say he sent sexual text messages to a 14-year-old boy.
Elgin Police Chief Harold Brown says Russell Spitzer "had given him some porn sites, mostly gay porn sites, had discussed sexuality with him."
An investigation started in late 2007, when Chief Brown says the boy's father returned from his military service overseas and learned that a relationship had started with his then 13-year-old son and Spitzer on the boy's MySpace page.
That's when police say the boy's parents found him watching porn on the internet.
There was more. According to police, the 39-year-old Scout leader used his cell phone to send explicit text messages to the child. The latest one was sent last Thursday. A day later, Spitzer was in jail.
Spitzer has been charged with giving obscene material to a minor, intent to contribute to the delinquency of a minor, and other charges.
Chief Brown worries there could be other victims. "There's always a possibility. I don't think Mr. Spitzer just decided a year and a half ago that he was going to do this, not at his age."
Spitzer was denied bond Monday, and another bond hearing was set for Thursday - bond was again denied.
Authorities say Spitzer is a Boy Scout leader and the victim was in the Boy Scouts.
"I was shocked and saddened," says Larry Brown. Brown is the director of the Indian Waters Council of Boy Scouts.
When the Boy Scout Council found out about the charges, they immediately removed Spitzer. "He cannot be a Scout leader anywhere in the country," says Brown.
Spitzer has three sons of his own, all of whom are Boy Scouts and all of whom are in the same troop.
