BEIJING, China (CNN) -- Chinese workers and army soldiers were racing to sweep snow-covered highways and unclog railway routes for millions of travelers trapped by cold weather.
More than 67 million people have been affected by the weather and economic losses are expected to reach as much as $3 billion, Chinese officials say.
Blizzards have snapped power lines and destroyed houses and farmland, prompting fears of food and energy shortages. Twenty-four people have died and some 827,000 people have been evacuated in 14 different provinces, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Monday.
In the past week, the snowstorms have hit the provinces in central, eastern and southern China -- places that are used to mild winters, not extreme wintry blasts.
"We've never seen such a cold weather lasting for such long a time," said Tang Shan, a man in his 70s in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province. "The last time we had one here was over 50 years ago, and not this bad."

Witness all you peoples!!!!
This is the awesome economic, military, and innovation leader at its potent best!
Shiver all of you Westerners in your boots!
And by the way . . .
I’ll take a pair of those boots, a Big Mac, and a Holiday Inn Express, if you would be so kind. I’m freezing my A$$ off along with 500,000 of my closest comrades at this freakin’ train station.
What a stinkin anthill that place must be.
See, this is why we shouldn’t let the Left bully us into mass transit. If they had had their own SUV’s, I bet most of them would’ve been home by now...
Ok, Hudder up commrades. Gonna stay toasty warm prease.
While 70 years is the blink of an eye in the climates of the planet, something could be happening besides GW.
It’s amazing... I just got back from Shanghai, and it snowed nearly every day. Something that just doesn’t happen. I mean, the grandmother of my company’s general manager - who’s lived in Shanghai all of her 86 years - never remembers when it snowed more than 3-4 days, let alone the 30 they’ve had this year.
Being from the colder reaches of the US, it’s not that hard for me, but you should see the Shanghaiese freaking out - a month straight of snow and sub-freezing temperatures is really playing havoc.
It would be akin to having LA or Miami hit with a 30 to 45 day snowstorm. People can handle a day or two of cold, but a month straight? Not a chance...
we are aboot to go from +40 to -40(windchill factor) here in 20 hrs....I want some aid....toilet paper,eggs,milk,bread....you know the drill.
I'm way down here in Mobile and I have those supplies all the time. Ready for ...whatever.
Throw in some alcoholic beverages and you could have a heck of a party!!!
Well......I quit drinking in 1989.
thats a joke... the real supplies needed during WEATHER are booze and cigs.So if you have exter Jim beam,PBR or Winstons????
Global warming causes global cooling!!! Didn't you know that...you....you...SKEPTIC!!!
Damn! How big is that train station?
They best do something quick at that rate or this could become a tragedy of epic proportions.
My first thought as well.....:o)
Carl Roves weather machine at work no doubt !
