It’s amazing... I just got back from Shanghai, and it snowed nearly every day. Something that just doesn’t happen. I mean, the grandmother of my company’s general manager - who’s lived in Shanghai all of her 86 years - never remembers when it snowed more than 3-4 days, let alone the 30 they’ve had this year.
Being from the colder reaches of the US, it’s not that hard for me, but you should see the Shanghaiese freaking out - a month straight of snow and sub-freezing temperatures is really playing havoc.
It would be akin to having LA or Miami hit with a 30 to 45 day snowstorm. People can handle a day or two of cold, but a month straight? Not a chance...
They best do something quick at that rate or this could become a tragedy of epic proportions.
My husband just returned from Shanghai and said the same thing. They just don’t know how to handle it. The major hotels have central heat, but most homes have little to none. Most factories have none.
I wonder if they might not have changed the weather patterns with the building of the Three Gorges Dam. Lots more moisture in the air now.
and I don't see heavy snow. I see it SNOWING and I see some ice on the power lines, but in virtually every picture of snow, I see 3-4 inches of snow. What am I missing? It's not like tthey got 6-7 FEET of snow.
Same with the pic upthread and one I saw last night.
All I see is 3-4 inches. Must be me I guess.
Being that the people in Shanghai aren’t used to snow falling more than 30 days, I wonder how the cities plumbing will be once spring hits?
How deep is the frost line this year and will the drinking water pipes be fine and not frozen or busted, and are the stormwater and sewage pipes frozen or not?
In addition, most buildings in Shanghai aren’t heated. People wear their coats to the office when it gets cold.
Well, I am living in the Greater Los Angeles area and so far this winter I might as well have been living in Seattle. According to the weather broadcasters, Los Angeles has even had more rain then Seattle this year (2008). BTW - Seattle may be getting snow this week with a possible blizzard later in the week. So far down here in sunny southern California snow has gotten down to near the 2,000 foot level. The Western US has been significantly colder then normal this winter. I guess the same could also be said for the other side of the Pacific (China).
