Howard Baker gives the nod to McCain

Former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker has endorsed John McCain for president.

Baker was influential in convincing fellow Tennessean Fred Thompson to run and was an honorary national chair on his campaign.

Baker, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 1980, was also Ronald Reagan's chief of staff and recently served as the U.S. ambassador to Japan.

In a statement released Saturday, McCain said Baker gave up his own political aspirations to join Reagan's staff and guided the president's tax cuts during the 1980s. McCain pledged to continue the Reagan tradition that Baker served.

A spokesman for Baker said the former Tennessee senator would make a statement later.

The voters will decide.

With these McCain endorsements you’d think we were getting marching orders from the GOP establishment (Dole Sarc. off)

Interesting considering Baker is the political mentor of Thompson and my suspicion of Thompson being a stalking horse for McCain.

Will we get a McCain-Thompson ticket to mollify us at the convention?

Ok, guys, can you see a pattern here? All the RINO establishment Pubs coming out of the weeds to support McPain? Howard Baker was at best a moderate Pub, a RINO actually, like McLame. Conservative Pubs are fighting on two fronts now, against the MSM, and against the establishment RINO Pubs. Don’t fall for it, Republicans. You’ll regret it bigtime if McInsane gets in. He’s a liberal, more a Dem than a Pub. Time for a grounds up revolution to get rid of McStain once and for all. Vote Mitt!

Most of his endorsements are from fellow Senators.

re: Howard Baker gives the nod to McCain

Well, of course he does! He’s part of the problem that put us in the sorry state our country’s in after a decade plus of conservatives abandoning conservatism and acting more like liberals.

Inertia is on the side of the status quo, and all these people lining up behind McCain have a vested, spelled “m-o-o-n-e-y”, or “p-o-w-e-r”. The list of people who are endorsing McCain is a great reminder of how we got where we are. Deficit spending, all talk and no action on energy independence, immigration, PC and on and on.

We are where are today because of the people we’ve put in office for the last 20 years or so. If you like what we are today then buy into the growing list of endorsements and vote for McCain. If not, ignore them and use your vote to send the message that we want something different. And Clinton will not be something different!!

P.S., I’ll tell you what I think is going on here. Fred Thompson would endorse McCain, but he knows he’d get major flack from the conservative base who loathes his buddy McCain. So, Howard Baker is the stalking horse for Fred. He’s being sent out as a surrogate for Thompson, to endorse McCain.

I’ve seen Obama and my judgment would be that McCain would have chance against him. Mitt Romney might.

So, Howard Baker is the stalking horse for Fred. He’s being sent out as a surrogate for Thompson, to endorse McCain.

Exactly what I thought when I read this, too. Baker is "testing the waters" for Fred's endorsement. I wouldn't be surprised in the least that, if McCain wins the nomination, he picks Fred as his VEEP.

This is yet more proof that anytime a Senator looks in the mirror, he sees a President......

Exchange McCain for Romney ???

Youre hysterical...

Why would we exchange one liberal for a worse one ????

Why would we exchange a Republican for a Democrat ????
