McCain much better than Romney for Social Conservatives
Myth Debunker | 01/27/08 | Yomin Postelnik

Posted on 01/28/2008 4:33:47 AM PST by Yomin Postelnik

As is usually the case in politics, in recent weeks we’ve seen a lot of unfair bashing of John McCain as well as gross distortion of his record. Of the two or three candidates with a shot winning the nomination, only John McCain has been a consistent conservative, dating back to before President Reagan.

The issues on which he differs with the party are never moral in nature and even then, he's never supported a tax increase and was only opposed to the last two major tax cuts because they contained no curbs on spending.

Romney sounds conservative now, but has a history of switching positions whichever way the wind blows. Promoting moral values can't be trusted to someone who will take whatever position is popular. Just look at Romney's supposed championing of conservative economics before switching last week to propose a liberal bailout in Michigan (that, by the way, wouldn't work). Simply put, someone who claims to have held "heartfelt" positions on both sides of the abortion debate, economic growth and every other major issue is not someone we want to trust with the issues that matter most to us. Who would?

Giuliani supports positions that are contrary to morally conservative values and has vastly less experience and less stature to affect any policies than does John McCain. McCain has a history of standing by his positions even if they become unpopular. Rudy's career as US Attorney for the Southern Dist. of New York was extremely self serving and a black mark on his career that questions whether he would take many positions if they didn't seem to his advantage to do so. McCain's record of consistency is far more reassuring and his personal character makes him more worthy of support.

And McCain is a conservative. He's the only candidate left in the race with an 82.3% lifetime conservative rating. Compare that to Fred Thompson (who was called the "clear conservative candidate")'s lifetime rating of 86%. On social issues McCain is actually more conservative than Thompson, far more so than Giuliani and more consistent and trustworthy than Romney.

He's also the only candidate who polls ahead of both Clinton and Obama in poll after poll after poll, making him the best option for keeping the White House in Republican hands. For all of these reasons and more I'd encourage you to support John McCain for the nomination and to urge your friends, family and acquaintances to do likewise.

Elect John McCain and see the House and Senate go Democrat for the next 40 years. John “Moses” McCain will have us in the political desert for the rest of our lifetimes.

Couldn’t you think of one, only one, bit of criticism?

Otherwise, it looks like you kinda like this guy.

Say goodbye to social conservatives, right to life groups, law and order groups, home schoolers, 1st and 2nd ammend. groups and just everyday normal folks if either Mccain or huckster is on the ticket.

Open borders and McCain/Feingold are so far left that they bend around the corner and become right.

What a donkey trailer filled with donkey dung. President Reagan never ever sought for and then preened like that NBC peacock accomplishing a personal destruction of a fellow Republican.... I will never forget what Johnny CAIN did to and continues to brag about daily destroying RUMMY. Even the Clintons could learn a thing or two about destroying a fellow McCain style...

John McCain who wanted to shaft the First Amendment with “campaign finance reform.”

John McCain, who wanted to protect incumbent politicians from “social conservatives” or anyone else questioning their records through McCain-Feingold.

Ha...ha....ha.

If we’re going to end up with a “democrat” in the presidency, it might just as well be a “real” one. I will never vote for John McCain. NEVER! He has always sided with the dems and has driven me crazy over the years. Once again...it’s 1996 and he’s next in line? Forget it! Will the Republicans ever learn?

I have to agree with Rush. If mccanniac or the huckster get the nod, I will not vote R for president. If the country is going to h-ll in a hand basket, let a dim be at the head.

Conservative? You mean like working against President Bush to nominate conservative judges? You mean like voting AGAINST the 2001 tax cuts to undo the Clinton tax increase? You mean working with that imbecile Russ Feingold to deny anyone but the likes of George Soros a voice in politics?

Is that the conservative track record you mean?

This must be the scenario used so that Huckster can sign on with McCain.

McCain is a non starter for me, so is Huck.

It will be the end of any interest I have in the GOP.

I thought it would take away from the message that he’s the best hope we’ve got. Sort of like what Pat Buchanan said at the convention about GHWB. “Clinton and Gore brag that they are the most liberal ticket ever and they are. There is a culture war in America. George Bush is on our side and Clinton and Gore are on the other side.”
McCain succeeds GHWB here. Insert Obama in place of Gore.
