Thats the sum of it. If you cant bring yourself to vote for the offerings in your primary, or if the eventual nominee is somebody you cant stomach, dont sit out, and dont vote for the Democrat. Write in Fred Thompsons name.
Why?
By doing so, you send a message that cant be mistaken or spun. It is a message that says:
I am a Republican who wanted to vote for a conservative GOP candidate, but wasnt able to do so. I cant vote for a Democrat, but I cant vote for any of the Republicans, either. So Im writing in the name of the candidate I wish I could have voted for, because he is the kind of candidate I could support.
They have to learn that if they want conservative votes, they have to nominate candidates conservatives would want to vote for.
This strategy is the only one that offers any hope of changing the leftward move of the GOP in the future. Sitting out wont do it - they can spin the reasons why you sat out. Voting Democrat wont do it, they can spin it that the GOP candidates werent liberal enough. Even voting None of the Above wont do it, because that doesnt specify what you want instead of none of the above.
Im pretty sure that if this notion starts to get traction, Fred Thompson will publicly oppose it. Dont worry, and dont listen to him. This isnt really about Fred Thompson. Its about the future of the Republican party. Fred ran because he hoped to influence that, but he failed. Now its time for the rest of us to take a crack at it.
So remember: Just write in Fred Thompsons name when it comes time to cast your vote. (Theres nothing stopping you from writing it in for other offices, either).
And ignore all the squalling that you have to vote GOP because it is marginally less evil than the Democrats. Given the rate of decay were seeing now, even that wont be true (if it really is even now) in a couple more election cycles.
YES YES YES!! JUST DO IT!!!!!
YES YES YES!!!! JUST DO IT!!!!!!
For crying out loud, this is so stupid. Some of you folks are being played for suckers.
until he would be elected then swing left and leave us with our mouths wide open(huh).
The stupidest thing I’ve seen all day. I plan to vote for Mitt in the VA primary if it gets that far and I hope all former Fredheads consider voting for him in their primary. Period. Fred withdrew. He’s not willing to compete and therefore doesn’t deserve anyones vote. I made several large (for me) donations and spent hours calling for Fred in SC...I now wish I hadn’t. If I’d believed that he wouldn’t bother to continue in the fight I’d have sent my money to Mitt or better yet kept it in the bank...Mitt has enough of his own money.
Fred is still on the ballot in the DPRNJ and DPRNY. They (ny republican party) tried to take him off in NY.
I still plan on voting for him.
I know how you feel. That’s the reason I didn’t contribute to Fred, I could see this coming. He’s not a power hungry, egomaniac who is willing to lie through his teeth...in short, he is too good and overqualified to be President. Sad.
Sure, let the independents and democrats elect McCain! /s
Or you could stay home and sulk, which would have the same effect.
As a very, very disappointed former Fred Thompson supporter, I must agree. See my tagline for the motivation behind my thoughts.
I have mentioned before that I have voted for Fred Thompson for Feb. 5 by absentee ballot in CA. Since I financially supported him, I just received a letter of thanks, and sure everyone received one as well.
Interesting that his name has been mentioned more often by the media since he quit the campaign, and articles have been written about him with a positive tone. So sorry he couldn’t see his way to stay in the running.
No way. As a former Fredhead, I am extremely disappointed he dropped out. But the reality is....he is NOT running for President.
No amount of pouting by voters is going to change that.
I will not waste my vote. It’s too important to stop Hillary and McCain.
Which states report the names of unofficial write-in candidates? All that might show up in the returns is an undervote.

I intend to vote for Fred in the primary, but have made no decision about the general. Super Tuesday is just a hop and a skip away. After that we'll have much more information.
Does the GOP have some kind of death wish? I didn’t leave the Democratic Party just to be surrounded by a bunch of quitters. The Democrats are bad for this country and are just plain wrong on every issue that affects us. Remember that before deciding to throw in the towel. Gees, would everyone here just stop being negative about our chances in November.
I'm with you ellery for the primary and probably beyond. I will wait and see for the general election but this year is so mixed up you can't see how it will end up. So many high negatives for so many candidates.
My problem, all of these Republicans are going to do a lot of damage to our country. I can't see anything good that any of them would do no matter what they promise. They don't have a good history.
People can shout all they want about the outcomes, they can stick it in their ear. Obama might just knock out Hillary and that will change all the configurations. You cannot know for a certainty what is going to happen so it is useless to predict anything. All I know is, I'm still with the principles Fred was campaigning on and that does not change.
I see the usual squalling from the power over principle, lesser of two evils, youve got nowhere else to go but the GOP crowd is here in force. Amazingly enough, I intend to ignore them as being the major part of the problem, and contributing nothing to a solution. Bill Quick
100% in agreement bump
Those are the candidates that would have been attractive...if they could have survived the primaries and biased media.
Thanks for your post.
I’m not as politically savvy as most Freepers and this kind of thing really infuriates me.
McCain is a Democrat.
Period.
