With Fred Thompson out of the presidential race, who's a self-respecting conservative to go for? Could it be, maybe, perhaps, a certain Republican-libertarian from Texas?
That's one question perplexing California state Sen. Tom McClintock, possibly the second-most-famous California Republican currently in office after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
McClintock created a stir two months when he endorsed Thompsons presidential candidacy. Having run for governor, lieutenant governor and state controller, McClintock has shown that while he has not won a statewide contest, he can win GOP primaries, which conservatives tend to dominate. So heading into the Feb. 5 primary, McClintocks endorsement is seen as important in California.

More of L Ron Pauls views
Ron Paul excused Al-Qaeda’s attacks on America: In the single most repulsive moment of the entire Presidential race so far, Ron Paul excused Al-Qaeda’s attack on American with this comment about 9/11,
“They attack us because we’ve been over there. We’ve been bombing Iraq for 10 years.” In other words, America deserved to be attacked by Al-Qaeda.
This is the sort of facile comment you’d expect to hear from an America-hating left winger like Michael Moore or Noam Chomsky, not from a Republican running for President — or from any Republican in office for that matter. If you want to truly realize how foolish that sort of thinking is, imagine what the reaction would be if we had bombed Egyptian or Indonesian civilians after 9/11 and then justified it by saying “We attacked them because those Muslims have been over here.”
The bajillion vetos would be wonderful. But is he strong enough on national defense?
I'm actually leaving the office now and am going to go get a little wasted, but if you could possibly link me to details of this, I promise to revisit it when I get home. My typing will probably suck though.
That previous poster would be me :)
There is surely a difference in protecting a special interest in terms of a business, or class of businesses — and telling the Feds to keep their business out of the social arena?
How can you protect one single class of businesses? That seems un-American to me. Why don’t the auto manufacturers get this protection every time some loon sues Porsche or GM when their 911 or Corvette goes off the cliff at 150mph?
There’s a deeper issue of tort reform. If you start treating certain classes of business and industry different from others, you are no better than the socialists.
“Than you really ought to 86 Rudy from your list of favorites at this point.”
I can settle for a guylike Rudy, whom I may disagree with on domestic matters, but has never advocated the wholesale surrender of the United States of America to a Rebel government in Richmond, Va., Imperial Germany, Nazi Germany, Japan, and Al Quaeda.
Harry Reid and Jim Webb are pro-Choice that doesnt mean I like them and that doesnt make them conservative
I’m flexible but not that flexible.
I find the success of our armed forces in battle, and the security of Americans abroad to be more important than the existence of the Dep of Education. But maybe thats just me!
Little thing called the equal protection clause of the Constitution (14th amendment), prohibits states from denying any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. In other words, the laws of a state must treat an individual in the same manner as others in similar conditions and circumstances. Authority to enforce this law falls under the legislative and judicial.
Google's not a person.
If he does, so what? The two are different as night and day.
Tom McClintock has earned the respect of Californians over the years.
If that were the case, he could win a statewide election (in the article it point that out). What is his plans now? Go to the private sector. Maybe he can join a conservative organization.
WD, be safe..
The gold standard is great if you want your economy to be directly tied to power failures and lack of coal in South Africa.
Could be worse. He could have endorsed Huckabee.
I can respect that. Please also respect that there are those of us out here who place a higher importance on the 2nd Amendment and ending the wholesale murder of infants than the WoT. That's why I personally find Paul to be hands-down a superior candidatee to Rudy. That said, I'm finally off the phone and am now actually leaving. My old friend John Daniels awaits. You freaks try not to kill each other while I'm gone.
His opinions on the war is shared by over two-thirds of the country. How are the other RINOs going to get these votes?
With Paul, the war stand is neutralized with Hillary, who doesn't have any credibility. He'll be able to pull off a huge chunk of her base in the general election.
Furthermore, Paul would still leave behind a contingent of troops to keep going after bin Laden.
And this guy was favored by 2/3rds of voters on American Idol for a while.
Just because it wins a popularity contest doesn't mean it is right.
Boy, some of those California conservatives have really, really been out in the sun too long. (And I thought infrared radiation was supposed to stimulate brain cell growth, not suppress it.)
There goes any respect I had for Tom McClintock. He’ll never be a player on a national level is this is the kind of candidate he backs.
