Venezuela's top food company has accused troops of illegally seizing more than 500 tonnes of food from its trucks as part of President Hugo Chavez's campaign to stem shortages.
The leftist Chavez this week created a state food distributor and loosened some price controls, seeking to end months of shortages for staples like milk and eggs that have caused long lines and upset his supporters in the OPEC nation.
The highly publicised campaign has also included government crackdowns on accused smuggling, with the military seizing 1,600 tonnes of food and sending 1,200 troops to the border with Colombia.
Jose Anzola, a director of food company Alimentos Polar, told reporters that troops stopped 27 of its trucks over the last three days and described the seizures as "illegal, arbitrary and irresponsible."

Bush: "YEAH, Yeah, yeah, WHATever... just fill'er up MonkeyBoy!!!"
Sounds as if old Hugo has the same philosophy as a former council person here. She referred to "people who have to steal."
Ain't socialism wonderful...works the same way every time it's tried.
Sounds just like his beloved Cuba and the Soviet Union with those long lines and shortages. That will be coming to the USA in late 2008 and by 2009 also with Hillary and the Marxist's Red Mafia in charge of Moscow D.C.
This is going to get good. Should we start a pool on whether he'll hang from his neck or his ankles?
And yet another socialist state starts coming apart at the seams. Why doesn’t somebody shoot this guy and put Venezuela out of its misery?

Hey Hugo!
What’s the problem buddy? Here in the U.S., there are no food shortages. Heck, in Peru there are no food shortages!
And you know what is weird? Before you came to power, Venezuala didn’t have any food shortages.
Makes you think, doesn’t it?
If Chavez won’t feed his army, it will feed itself.
A brilliant long term solution!
Venezuela has had several like that since the big oil discoveries. They’ll just get another.
I don’t want to cause any hate and discontent, but my suggestion to the nice people of Venezuela is that if they ever get their country back again to institute a genuine 2nd Amendment. No putzing around with any talk of “militias,” just simply word it as “The people have a right to keep and bear arms. Any legislation to the contrary is void upon passage.” Then, the next time the troops try seizing the food give them some lead first.
I suppose all that oil kinda stuck to the roofs of their mouths when they tried to swallow it...
Take his oil weapon away and the people of Venezuela will get rid of him, give him the old Bolivaran encircle.
Probably sold to pay for Chavez’s latest cocaine binge.
Yeah, that outta do it.
Oil is nearly $100/bbl, Venezuela is swimming in it.
Mr. Chavez has the good will of every leftist and every tyrant on the planet.
Yet, the day is coming soon when Sally Strothers will have to get on the tube to beg for money to feed the starving Venezuelan children, maybe even before the oil bubble bursts.
Pretty pathetic.
