So far, Mitt Romney is winning overwhelming support, according to a poll at FreeRepublic.com, which had been a place where Fred Thompson's supporters congregated.

“I would love to see a link where Williams ‘officially’ endorsed Paul. Williams’ exact quote regarding the race was “I personally think that if we chose the president of the United States at random, we’d get a better president than any president since Ronald Reagan,””
Sigh
Williams was questioned about whether he might run for the Presidency by the Washington Times.
He said no, and added:
“If the framers of the Constitution were somehow to come back, Ron Paul is one of possibly only three people in Congress that they’d even talk to.”
Can’t find the original but it was cited by John Fund of the Wall Street Journal.

“I also seem to recall someone pointed out a few months ago that the only candidate Williams has donated money to is Romney.”
Incorrect - none of the walter williams who have given are Walter E Williams, the economist.
(laughing sadly)
I think the Supreme Court is the big picture, and I think Romney will pick better justices than McCain or Hillary or Obama would.
To Quote ROmney's own words:
"I signedI would have supported the original assault weapon ban. ~~ snip ~~ And if there is determined to be, from time to time, a weapon of such lethality that it poses a grave risk to our law enforcement personnel, thats something I would consider signing."
Here's an interesting post from www.fredthompsonforum.com.
"In his 1994 US Senate run, Romney backed two gun-control measures strongly opposed by the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups: the Brady Bill, which imposed a five-day waiting period on gun sales, and a ban on certain assault weapons"
And in 2002, when he was running for Governor of MA, Romney praised the states strong gun laws in a debate against Democrat Shannon OBrien. We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them, he said. I wont chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety.
The most significant gun legislation Romney signed, as governor, was a 2004 measure instituting a permanent ban on assault weapons. The law was based on the federal assault weapons ban, which was set to expire. According to activists at the time, the bill made Massachusetts the first state to enact its own such ban, and Romney praised this move.
Romney's conversion on abortion is quite simply an election year accommodation along with the "hunter all my lifetime" thing, and Romney's not even honest.
Huckabee is just not very bright, Romney is smart and he is trying to buy the White House -- he is also smarmy and most of all he is a flipper....
Then thereis McCain -- he truly lives up to his reputation as a maverick voting with the democrats 9 times out of 10...and putting out feelers to change to the democratic party back in 2001 when he was a poor loser to George Bush and even as recently as 2004 considering the Veep spot with Kerry.
That’s another part of the big picture - REAL big, that I forgot about.
Thanks, gruna.
For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone who supported FRed would pick Mitt. He’s the exact opposite in every way.
FRed was the only candidate I supported. (And that was in desperation.) I can’t see myself voting for anyone else, unless FRed’s on the ticket.
You’re welcome.
I don’t think that is the case at all... I think he would be just as bad as McCain or Huckabee on SCOTUS...
I feel your pain, but consider the nomination of Supreme Court justices. Imagine the Court packed with liberals for the next 20-30 years or more; deciding thousands of cases over that time. Imagine the D.C. gun ban case or any other case of a Constitutional issue being decided by such a Court.
Imagine having no viable recourse when Congress and the President conspire to enact unconstitutional legislation. I think the possibility of having a center or right of center court is worth pulling the lever for any (R) - as distasteful the prospect may be.
“Should we surrender the war on terror in exchange for smaller government?”
What war on terror?
Our borders are wide open.
We send Palestinian Fatah terrorists arms and money, and encourage them by pressuring Israel to give up half of Jerusalem - after we forced them out of Gaza, giving Hamas a huge victory. Now we pressure Israel to send fuel and food to Hamas who shoots missiles at them every day.
We continue to let thousands of military age male Muslim foreign exchange students into our country year after year.
We import Muslim somnali tribesmen as “refugees” by the boatload. Here in Phoenix, they all seem to work at the airport. I’m not kidding.
So much for, fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them here.
“Im all for smaller government, but pacifism is the last thing that we need right now.”
What’s the alternative, borrow another $ trillion from China to use to fight their client, Iran? Then the dollar can fall further down the sinkhole and we’ll really lose.
That’s a serious question, btw. Not rhetorical.
We have national guard protecting Iraq’s border. Why not ours?
We aren’t taking the threat seriously now.
What Paul proposes is a net improvement. It took me a while to come to that conclusion, but I think the facts support it.

” Imagine the D.C. gun ban case or any other case of a Constitutional issue being decided by such a Court.”
Bush’s DOJ filed an amicus brief SUPPORTING the DC gun ban.
Kasich? No way, no how. I ain't a votin' fer that varmint. He's a Rino, an' a commie an' he voted agin' puppies and bluebirds. 'Sides that he farts in Church. Stinky ones.
. . . Yeah.
You’re right. I was just trying to throw in the obscure reference to political activity not being a dinner party. :)
We’ll just have to disagree on that.
Well, now you can understand why. I don’t think he’s lying about it, because nobody has come forward and said he was lying about it.
As someone else explained, it’s not an indictment of Thompson. It just suggests that at the start, they were seeing if he could get support for VP, and then he caught fire, and decided he had the support to be President.
Anyway, if Carl knew that, it would have been a factor in everything he wrote and said about the campaign.
I was for Fred.
Huckabee is my 2nd choice.
Romney would be my 3rd choice.
McCain would be at the bottom of the list. Unfortunately, I believe he will be our next President. If it’s between him and Clinton/Obama I’ll put a bag, hold my nose and vote for the guy.
Sorry, it’s an article from the Washington Times that actually mentions Free Republic.
