Rush Limbaugh: May Not Support GOP Nominee
newsmax.com ^ | January 22, 2008 4:34 PM | staff

Posted on 01/22/2008 9:14:16 PM PST by kellynla

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh stunned his listeners by announcing that he might not support the Republican presidential nominee in this year’s election.

Limbaugh said on Monday’s show: "I can see possibly not supporting the Republican nominee this election, and I never thought that I would say that in my life."

The reason: “You don’t have a genuine down-the-list conservative” among the GOP candidates.

“Wherever you go here in this roster of candidates, you're going to be able to point out ‘not conservative, what he did there is not conservative’” Rush said.

The Republican front-runners want the nomination “because it's their turn,” he also stated. “We tried that in '96 with Bob Dole and now they're running the same scenario…

"I'm telling ya, it's gonna come down to which guy do we dislike the least. And that's not necessarily good."

After Rush’s pronouncements, Los Angeles Times blogger Andrew Malcolm wrote: “Across the country, people were dropping their coffee cups, choking on sandwiches, fainting and driving off the road. The king of conservative talk radio not supporting the Republican nominee?”

But Limbaugh’s remarks are not quite so surprising in light of statements he made about GOP candidates Mike Huckabee and John McCain last week:

“I'm here to tell you, if either of these two guys get the nomination, it's going to destroy the Republican Party. It's going to change it forever, be the end of it. A lot of people aren't going to vote. You watch.”

I would respect Rush if he did refuse to support a RINO nominee if he means all of the RINOs, including Romney.

"Rush isn’t there to tell me who to vote for. I can figure that out for myself and so can you and everyone else who calls him- or herself a conservative. If republicans can’t figure out who is conservative, then it tells me that the GOP as a whole has no interest in conservative candidates. So I think this means it is time (past time really) for a new conservative party to emerge."

Yes, way past time!

You lie every time you post something in support of that oily, cowardly, flip-flopping Massachusetts liberal, Mitt Romney. You don’t have any room to talk about lying. Romney is a master of weasel words.

Wait’ll the NY Times or the Boston Globe or CBS News says that Mitt is taking a mean, conservative position on some issue or another. I’m betting Mitt will run like a scared bunny rabbit the way he did in ‘94 in his landslide loss to Teddy. The closer it got to election day, the further left Mitt went. It was disgusting.

Rush was talking about the whole remaining slate of GOP candidates when he said he “may not support the GOP nominee”. That includes your oily, cowardly, flip-flopping Massachusetts liberal, Mitt Romney.

I am, already. I’m looking at Romney...but there are so many questions for a real conservative.

very true. At first glance, Mitt may be the default guy. There is no way I would ever cast a vote for McCain. One thing that bothers me is how most of the Reps seem to embrace the fraud of AGW.

AGW has the potential to unleash a level of control in our lives that is insidious. Most people don't have a clue to the vile totalitarian nature of the AGW movement. It bothered me greatly that Mitt and others were so eager to raise their hands when that leftist moderator in Iowa posed the loaded question on Climate change. Fred gave hope that someone that may hold the Presidency would bring sense to the issue. He is now gone. McCain is rabid for AGW, as are the demoRats.

I wish that some scientist, say Roy Spencer or Dr Ball, or Professor Linzden, could get to speak to Romney. If Mitt believes humans cause climate change, it is disheartening. I realize this is but one topic, but AGW has the potential to grow into a cancer that will push what's left of our capitalistic system into pure Socialism.

It would be bold of Mitt to forcefully state that a major aspect of the AGW crowd is totalitarian control of our lives and that aspect must be repudiated. Liberty and limited government need to be emphasized by our candidates. On issue after issue, we are always pushed left. Programs grow, regulations multiply -- nibbling at our Liberty and pocketbook. At this point, it seems Mitt may be our candidate. I pray Mitt will have the wisdom to speak forcefully of the limits of government power.

“but a Republican President will also have power over our party, which is ours means of opposition and our means of doing better next time.”

WOW!!!! that’s scary stuff, so you’d just scrap the country’s best interest for 4-8 years to save what? The GOP??… maybe some good will come out of this election and a small part of the country might start to realize how correct the founders were to dread that the country would fall into a two party system.

McCain/Kennedy.

Oh, there are some good conservatives out there,
if we can just get them elected...
but I still think it will be a brokered convention and Dick Cheney may be the answer.

However, whoever the GOP candidate is, I may have to “hold my nose”...again... and vote for whomever but I will vote GOP.

The Supreme Court,at the very least, depends on a GOP win!!!

They’re blowing Taps here.

“So I think this means it is time (past time really) for a new conservative party to emerge.”

How about we just get rid of open primaries? Then the Republican Party gets to choose the candidate for us, rather than the Democrats.

I’m with Rush on not casting a ballot for mcpain ...... Just ride out the next totally screwed up 4 years, ossamma obamma will be totally overwhelmed and do zero and slick won’t shut up or got out of our face for a minute and even the libs will be sick of hitlery in 4 years.

So, in four years, the U.S. Supreme Court will have two more young Ruth Ginsburg clones that will keep Roe v. Wade the law of the land and abortion on demand legal in all fifty states for decades to come.

And, in eight years, after we have bugged out of Iraq and abandoned the geographical region containing 70% of the World's known oil reserves to Iranian Islamist nutjobs with suicide martyr dreams and nuclear-tipped ICBM ambitions, you will be feeling lucky that, although Aunt Peggy in New York and Uncle Charlie in Washington, DC can go up in a mushroom cloud if an Iranian mullah has a bad day, your particular city is not yet within Iranian ICBM range.

If the majority of the average American voters in the 2008 primaries are not in tune with our conservative philosophy at the moment, that's life. Life ain't perfect. Never was. Never will be.

When you are not sitting in the driver's seat of a car and the driver suffers a stroke, you can either continue to sit and pout that you were not allowed to drive on this particular trip or you can, at least, reach over and grab the steering wheel so that the out of control car veers towards the corn field instead of over the center line and into the 16-wheeler coming at you at 70 MPH.

I think I’ll get behind Alan Keyes now until he gets out of the primary race.

I’ll have to see what happens come the GOP convention.

“so what should we do? just sit there and let hillary win?”

We back the best we can get and we do our damnedest to drag them to conservative thinking where needed.

All these candidates are trying to court conservatives on some level. Now is the time to get them on record to support certain things.

“A lot of voters vote personality.”

Bingo, and I bet many here don’t realize what a primal judgment instinct this is. As social animals we have very basic instincts that respond to this stuff.

One way to see it is to try the following - find a political debate being televised between several Western-world candidates (of whom you know nothing) speaking a language you understand poorly or not at all. I was in this situation and found myself comparing which seemed like too-smooth talkers, which seemed sincere (even I found myself falling for it rofl), which seemed overly assertive/combative.

Then imagine that that is what the american public does for the most part, aside from vote as the media nudges them to.

Welcome to the media age of politics.

Write-in candidates have to be “listed” prior to the vote or else they won’t be tallied. And it varies by state.

If you have a “write-in” to suggest better make sure your candidate knows he’s being drafted.

For an Alaskan, it looks like Obama might actually be a better choice that McCain. He has at least given hints that he would allow us to have an economy here rather than sacrifice us to the gods of global warming and environmentalism. McCain doesn’t understand that people have to work for a living. He only understands that which gives him glory in the media. He is more beholden to the media than anyone imaginable—and certainly more than Obama, I am sorry to say. This is bad news.

He’s a conservative. He should support conservatives. He should support the conservatives over the RINO’s in the same way as he supports the R’s over the D’s. He is, after all, conservative first, and Republican second.

The problem is, he supported Ruddy and Mitt08 from the beginning. Fred was always an afterthough. What does that say about him and how conservative he is? He has no credibility with me and I don't trust him when he says McCain and Huckabee are unelectable. I'd vote for McCain over Mitt08 every time.

Dang, doesn’t it suck to have to hold your nose and pull the lever? But, alas, you’re right we have to keep the SCOTUS into perspective. I’ll hold my nose again and vote GOP.

“The “I will sit this one out or cast a protest vote” folks will make it deja vu all over again.”

I’m not sure this semi-official version of electoral history mirrors my memory of that election... The people who were going out for Perot were disillusioned independents. The die-hard Republicans still voted Republican, and the die-hard Democrats still voted Democrat. Slightly more dems voted for Clinton because they saw Perot as largely Republican-ish, but has there ever been a study that showed Clinton won because conservatives sat the race out? Even if they hadn’t, your own chart shows that Clinton picked up 42% to Bush’s 27%.

“McCain/Feingold” “McCain/Kennedy.”

Not to my favorite things ever but two slip ups in legislation and service to the country for over 45 years. I guess your right Rushy boy are right, totally unacceptable. “Unusual Lethality” is way better, and Romney was a bulkhead against rising taxes in Boston, right?

Keyes may not last until the convention and may not win any primaries and may not be “viable” in a general election (a lot of maybes that have no weight for or against him)...

BUT it is better to register a “no confidence” vote against Ron Paul, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Huckleberry Huckabee, AND Rudy G on principle. Or are we trying to vet the candidate who can “beat Hillary”?

Wouldn’t it be a kick in the pants to see Hillary win her race against Obama only to face another black man, this time a conservative black man who is articulate on the issue of opposing abortion?
