Like many, you think you can tell whether a screen actor who acted in a few movies you liked and whom you didn't know personally was a good man.
Consider what you're saying...you've never met him either and don't know any more about him than I do. And yet you can pronounce judgements about what a bad person he was and how he deserves to be mocked and ridiculed after death. Pretty classy.
No, I certainly don't know him personally but what I do know is that he participated in gay culture with a very high-profile movie, was a drug addict, and left a child without a father.
Not good fruit. Now, I don't know that he was a bad man, but those are bad things. Certainly not deserving of respect.
And don't think that Ledger necessarily was good because he gave to charity. Almost all Hollywood celebrities give money to charities. That doesn't necessarily make them good because many of those charities have political agendas and are the opposite of good. Can't say about the ones he gave to because don't know what they were but I would not automatically believe them to be healthy ones.
Confusing plentiful material things and riches with having an easy and good life is a mistake. There are people with very few material goods who are very happy and those with tons of material things who are miserable.
Oh, give me a break. "Gay culture" my foot. Like he's the only actor who's ever played a gay character before? "Brokeback" was just a movie, and people REALLY need to grow up and get over it.
Now, I don't know that he was a bad man, but those are bad things. Certainly not deserving of respect.
He was a human being who never killed anyone or caused any suffering of others, so he deserves prayers and respect in death. It's that simple. You may be petty and immature enough to let superficial things blind you from honoring human life, but I'm not.
You have not listed a single thing that convinces me that it's okay to mock and ridicule him after he's died and his family and friends are left in pain and suffering.
Are Freepers going to turn on R Lee Ermey for “Saving Silverman?”
Good question. And he locked lips with Jack Black, no less.
I didn't mock him. I just said he's not respectable.
I don't go gaga over Hollywood celebs. I don't generally respect them unless I know they've done something worth respecting.
I’ve come to expect this from FR, unfortunately.
When someone dies, it doesn't matter if they were a famous celebrity or your next door neighbor. Unless it's a murderer, rapist, or dictator, life is to be valued in all forms...that's what makes us a decent and civilized society. It's not a question of going "ga-ga" over celebrities, it's a question of decency. You think someone praying for and/or wishing a "Rest in Peace" for a famous person who's died is "going 'ga-ga' over a celebrity?"
You're a real piece of work, you know that? I'd expect this kind of inhuman vitriol from DU or DailyKos...
Does this mean that in all of his movies, he was acting under the influence of heroin?? Because a heroin addiction (I think) isn't something that you can just turn on and off.
*Sigh*...yeah, I know.
I’ve never heard that before. Where did you read it?
I know he played a heroin addict in a movie, but not that he actual WAS one.
Is there a Prayers-Going-Up PING List for FR celebrity worshippers, that is called whenever Britney sneezes? If so, please keep me off it!
Ledger did a very fine job in his role.
Between that, the state of the elections, the fighting on here and a few other reasons, I’m not sure why I’m still here.
I for one consider “A Knights Tale” one of my favorite movies and a film I can watch over and over. Then again, I’m not too uptight to take EVERYTHING so seriously. But I am saddened at this man’s untimely death.
Sure is an outstanding epic film.
I think some of the anger and ugly comments we are seeing are a result of Hollywood’s relentless campaign against what is good, wholesome and right about America. We are under almost continual assault when it comes to our conservative values. Then, when one of the proponents kills himself, whether accidentally or on purpose, we are supposed to be very sad.
It rankles some people.
My son owns “The Patriot” DVD, and when he heard Heath was in “Brokeback,” he was scandalized. He thought of Heath as a handsome, vigorous, patriotic young man because of “Patriot.” To have him publicly state, by his behavior, that a gay cowboy is just as legit as a revolutionary war hero, was an irresponsible thing to do. Sure, it was his right, but I don’t respect him for that.
Today two of the kids read he died - from what? they asked. Drug overdose, I replied. Wowww, they were shocked, shook their heads. . .another irresponsible act, whether done accidentally or on purpose. The older set standards for the younger. We all have people in our wake. He was a successful movie star. If he didn’t want to be a large scale role model, he should have gone into a different procession.
All that said, I am sorry he is dead. There is a lot to live for, and I am sure he is wishing for a “do over” at this point.
