St. Cloud is getting a new office with the power to investigate discrimination cases.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced the city's new human rights office on Monday morning at a Martin Luther King Junior Day celebration at St. Cloud City Hall.

More than a dozen bias-motivated incidents have been reported at St. Cloud State University since November, including swastikas and a report of white men spitting at a female student of color. Police, the university and the local FBI have been investigating.

The new human rights office will have the power to enforce Minnesota's human rights law and reach out to the public. Four Minnesota cities now have the power to investigate human rights violations, including Duluth, Minneapolis and St. Paul.

"The new human rights office will have the power to enforce Minnesota's human rights law..."

I wonder if this law extends to any acts which aren't already illegal? For example the incidents noted above are already prohibited under vandalism and battery statutes. If not, then doesn't this commission stand for the proposition that some types of victims are more important than others? Seems this has the strong potential to become one of those "thought crime" tribunals like they have in Canada.

We all lose a little, every time some government entity creates a new panel, bureau, department, or office to address issues that already have panels, bureaus, departments or offices.
The creeping DemLib way...Government is good, therefore more government must be better.

Time to cede MN to Canada?

if they take a page from St.Paul, they’ll ban the Easter Bunny and poinsettia plants from City Hall...important work like that.

T- PAW needs to return to the private sector; his brain has turned to mush.

He’s trying to make himself “acceptable” for Washington.

Like McCain, he loves pandering to the lefties that hate him.

Looks like Pawlenty is bucking for a Vice Presidential slot
with McCain.

Another disappointment of a Republican governor, like the last
Republican governor of Colorado (Owens?).

While not condoning any "bias-motivated incidents" when was the last time the government opened up an office of any kind over 12+ infractions?
