Good news for Huckabee TRIBUNE-REVIEW Salena Zito Posted January 22, 2008 3 :00 PM
Democratic strategist John Lapp said, "On first blush, it would seem that (Mike) Huckabee is the main beneficiary of Fred Thompson's withdrawal. Huckabee, Thompson and, to a lesser degree, Mitt Romney were splintering the hard core, evangelical, social conservative vote. With Thompson's withdrawal, Huckabee has the chance to consolidate the far right. However, if Thompson endorses John McCain, that would be a nice conservative credential to have, considering McCain has been struggling with the mainline conservative Republican base."

Further, Fred's supports, by and large, will go to Romney, who is viewed as the more conservative of the two. Right or wrong?
Um, wrong.
Most I know of are actually moving to Romney if anyone.
>If you can find me 5 out 100 Fred supporters who are going to Huckabee, Ill eat my shorts.
Are those chicken and biscuit flavored?
He won't. And even if he did, the Fredheads wouldn't follow the endorsement.
“I started out Hunter, moved to Thompson and WOULD NEVER move to Huckleberry.”
I hear ya. I’m in the same boat. I’m on the fence with giving Romney a shot, but the other 3 (Huck, Rudy McCain) NEVER!!!!! Ron Paul is even more palatable than them - At least we’d get sound domestic policy.
If it’s one of them, I’m definately voting third party.
I don’t see that Fred dropping out will help Huckabee. I see Fred as the anti-Huckabee, with Fred’s supporters turning to Romney.
Somehow, I don’t think Fred will endorse anyone too soon.
I believe he feels it might be seen as a betrayal to those who were for him.
Probably best he lets the Fredheads choose where they go.
Fried squirrel.
I can't either unless it is a southern pride thing that most of us who live north of the Mason-Dixon line just couldn't understand.
I really wish Fred would have stayed in until at least Super Tuesday. But it is entirely possible that he is angling for the VP slot as a sop to conservatives and getting out now leaves him with the opportunity to unite the party, thereby earning the appreciation of the eventual nominee.
The author of this piece is one of the better political writers for our local fishwrap which, in turn, is a better newspaper, by far, than the dinosaur mass media. She is also a regular Freeper from what I understand.
What you just said. Pretend I just said it.
Thats exactly my sentiment. LOL
I agree. However, if Huckabee drops out — or is perceived as being a lost cause — I think a plurality of his votes go to McCain beauce McCain is perceived as more genuine and more reliably pro-life than Romney.
The lesser of three evils.
The MSM does not know voters they only push poll.
Huckabee is out of money, they are trying to rescue him.
Thompsons out helps ROMNEY.
Huckabee is evangelical TV only crowd.
Frankly, I cannot fathom the mind of somebody who would go from supporting Thompson to supporting Huckabee. It just does not make any sense.I think it's total BS. The fact that (unfortunately) there weren't that many of us Fredheads means that we were with Fred for a reason, and that reason was his conservative reasonableness.
No reasonable person, of any persuasion, let alone conservative, would have any reason to vote for a shyster huckster Elmer Gantry snake-oil salesman.
“Thompson’s Drop out probably benefits Huckabee most”
I have yet to meet the frmr Fred-head that will support that Christain Socialist in the primary. I say the majority goes to Mitt or Juan in about a 70/20 split with the other ten percent just saying to hell with it.
Precisely.
I am with you there. I will NEVER vote for Huck.
I found it laughable that Huck blamed Fred for his loss in SC.
I found it even more laughable that people think Fred’s supporter will turn to Huck.
Not this one.
