McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:
"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."
Did I say I would stay home? I will be voting in our city and state elections. Do you honestly think one vote will matter in this state? I need to check my state statistics but I think it has gone Rep. since Ronald Reagan.
I was right about Fred all along.
Good post. "Hearts and minds" comes to mind.
Thanks to you for all of the pings, Politicalmom. Thanks to all the Fredheads. Sad day for all of us.....even sadder day for this country.
God Bless Fred and his family.
I didn’t get an email this morning either......and I regularly get emails from Lacy.
Thanks for all the pings mom. Once a FRedhead, always a FRedhead. We will overcome and one day a true conservative will stand up and stay in till the end.
Other than Fred, I can see myself voting for no one. I’m not one to hold my nose and vote just because he/she has an “R” after their name. Who knows how I will feel when the election comes around but so far, none of the “R” candidates is worthy of my vote.
Thanks to you guys for the pings, and to all FRedheads. I still hope for a deadlocked convention, and pray for healing for his mom.
I spent the morning calling friends overseas to make sure they voted for Fred. I spent the afternoon trying to make sense of a campaign that ended with 1% of the delegates chosen.
I will be voting for Rudy. He’s better than what is left, but that’s not saying much.
We have a one-party system now. One party, two names.
Rats.
Perhaps, but most of the people she applies the word to are traitors, by the Constitutional definition.
I am sick about this, but I could see it coming. I just wish I could understand what really happened to Fred after all the high hopes this past Summer.
For the first time in my 20 years of following presidential politics, I have no one to enthusiastically vote for. I supported GHWB, even Dole, and GWB twice. I wanted George Allen, but that was not to be. There has GOT to be an electable conservative out there.
I don't know what I will do, but I can NOT see myself allowing Hillary or Obama becoming Commander in Chief. To me, this entire election is about the Supreme Court. At least one, and possibly two or three justices will retire within the next 4-8 years. If Hillary or Obama becomes Pres., with a Dem Congress, we are screwed for many many years to come. I have to believe that ANY of the Rinos left will at the very least possibly nominate a fairly conservative justice. I KNOW for a fact that HillObama will not.
It is utterly amazing to me that there are millions of Conservatives in this country, and we have known for more than 16 years now that Hillary aspired to this office, and we couldn't field ONE decent candidate to beat her?!?!? THAT is pathetic. Absolutely and completely pathetic. I guess I now know how democrats felt in 72 with McGovern going up against Nixon.
Sure was good hanging with all the Fredheads...gonna miss all the comraderie......now who the he** am I gonna support though?
Tanc, Hunter, and now Fred’s out...no conservative left, this is a sad day for America. I am a afraid that Amerika is coming.
Any suggestions on what we can do now?
For me, I will write in his name when it is time for me to vote.
I will not vote for any of the other “so-called” Republicans. They are all nothing to me.
I have no conservative candidate for my vote. I did learn from the Governator not to buy a Rhino and expect him to be an elephant. On most of the conservative issues about which I care, (limited government, local control, individual rights, conservative SCOTUS judges) there is now no conservative to carry the standard.
I am now a noncommitted Republican. If Mitt wants my vote, he will have to work for it. He will have to show me he can carry the conservative standard. Otherwise, I will become a noncommitted independent and look to a third party. Don’t just hand Mitt your vote. Make him court us conservatives.
As for the Huckabee, Gulliani and McCain, they have shown themselves incapable of conservative thought and action. They will NEVER get my vote.
Thank you for all the pings for Fred.
Thank you for the pings for Fred.

I thought the same thing. It's a sad day...
