Carl Cameron says it'll become offical sometime later this week.
Oh well, we're doomed. Let's hope it'll be minimal damage until 2012.
I am an equal opportunity basher....and I have bashed all 5 of the remaining contenders.
I stated someplace or other this morning that I would support Romney IF (and only if) he will IMMEDIATELY announce Santorum, Delay, Hunter, or Thompson as his running mate.
So....get on the ball....send him an email. I eagerly await his response. :>)
I am not bashing Slick Willard, nor am I supporting John McCain. At least as far as I am concerned, your post is a double lie.
"Conservatives?? We don' need no steenkin' Conservatives!"
"Borders?? We don' need no steenkin' borders!"
"__________? We don' need no steenkin' __________!"
“...means I do not vote...”
Yes you do. You’ll be voting for Hillary or Obama by not bothering to vote against them.
Guess you’ll show the Republicans!
“Any idea on what’s with Guiliani? Will Fred supporters go to him or Romney?”
I think Romney mostly, here’s why:
Conservatives were supporting Thompson because he was the proven conservative. Thompson’s problem was his bad, disorganized campaign, which just projected the message that he wasnt an up-and-at-em leader. The people who stuck with Thompson are those who saw the ideological warts on the other candidates and didnt like them and so stuck with the *real conservative*.
Romney is running as a Reagan unified coalition conservative with the business/economy experience to turn around DC on economic issues. fiscal cons and prolife+fiscal cons who cant abide Huck’s populism moved into his corner.
Romney’s prolife and against gay marriage, but since he move d to be prolife in 2005, he social issues positions were attacked as insincere, So the social cons, especially evangelicals hit with a Mormon and a Massachusetts history, didnt accept that, so they split to go with Huck. THOMPSON’S BIGGEST ERROR WAS IN NOT GOING AFTER THESE VOTERS! LOSING THEM TO HUCK IN IOWA IS WHAT TRULY ENDED HIS CHANCES. I WAS TELLING ANTI-ROMNEY FRED-HEADS THIS IN NOVEMBER AND THEY WOULDNT LISTEN! But the numbers are plain: Thompson could have won Iowa if he made the case to them that he was the consistent proven conservative. He didnt, they picked Huck. The result was the “Clusterhuck”.
Rudy’s mini-scandal over NYPD guarding his then-mistress-now-wife Judith in early December sunk his candidacy and revived McCain. The national security cons flipped to McCain.
For national security cons, it was enough for McCain to say “Surge” and they were for him.
So right now Rudy has no natural base. McCain stole his voters. He’s done.
Romney has a base of fiscal/economic conservatives who recognize that McCain has really been wrong and/or nowhere on those issues, except to be against ‘pork’ (when its not in Arizona). McCain remains a nanny-state regulator and not a supply-sider (a la Club for Growth).
Romney is more conservative than McCain overall, so Thompson folks are switching from a proven conservative to an unproven conservative who would pretty much govern as President about as conservatively as Thompson would.
Some may pick McCain over particular nits on Romney side.
The small minority of Mormon-haters will slink off to McCain or stay with Huck. Any RINO in the White House is better than a Mormon, for them. The larger group of “electability” worriers might prefer McCain if the swallow the MSM bias that McCain is Mr electable (He aint and Romney will be as electable but you cant prove these things until you try it).
McCain otoh is a proven RINO. So for any “Reagan coalition” conservatives, it is an easy choice.
On balance, some may go McCain but it is an easy choice for conservatives: Support Mitt Romney.
“When it truly sinks in that Hillary could actually become the CIC, the party faithful will rally.”
Ummm...we’re really in trouble if that didn’t sink in when she moved to NY. How come the “rally” didn’t happen then?
I don't agree on all your political positions but on the above I agree: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. This forum should have supported Hunter, yet a little less than a year ago, moved en masse into the F. Thompson camp. Now Hunter's chance for even a VP slot is ruined.
They’re all in there humor-proof bunkers worrying about islamofascists.
Do me a favor. Right around May 1st, could you deliver three or four yards of that bullshit to my backyard? It’s good for the tomatoes.
I always liked Fred, but never drank any of the FredHead kool-aid because I could see this day coming.
That is very true of McCain. My money and my vote are mine - not his.
“Guess youll show the Republicans!”
Hopefully, but I doubt it. They’ve been destroyed by the Dems repeatedly over the last few years, but keep reverting to the same horrible playbook. It’s time for them to go.
Reason prevails. Romney is the obvious choice for anyone who thinks about the alternatives.
Well, to be honest, I was never really fully on board with Fred Thompson, because I recognized that he was nearly as flawed as the other big name candidates. He was better...but not by all that much.
So, this isn't a huge problem for me. I still don't know who to support, but Romney is a little better than McCain, Giuliani or Huckabee, IMO, if only for the optimism.
I really wish we weren't in this situation, but we are, so it's time to decide.
NY is not a purple state on the national level. It is BLUE as blue can be.
Mitt Romney advanced more conservative principles in this one speech than any other candidate’s speech:
http://www.mittromney.com/News/Speeches/DEC_2008
“
“Our strategy the American strategy you know well. It is economic freedom combined with personal freedom. That’s our strategy.” - Mitt Romney
Rudy has been campaigning in Florida for 50 days solid, according to some accounts. He really wants to win it.
I sure hope you’re wrong on both accounts... Huckabee sholdn’t be any where NEAR the White House — he needs to go back to Arkansas and stay there...
If Thompson endorses McCain I will be VERY disappointed... But, maybe Fred knows something the rest of us don’t. I agree that he shouldn’t be rewarded for his contempt last year leading the scare tactics regarding amnesty (they’ll riot in the streets if we don’t pass this — is this how we deal with groups that threaten violence???).
Anyway, I guess time will tell... I feel lost right now to tell you the truth. I truly believed Fred would pull this out somehow. I guess G-d may have different plans for him — I’m hoping someone picks HIM as a running mate... At least then we’d have ONE Conservative on Pennsylvania Avenue affecting decisions...
