Fred Thompson sources say the actor and former Tenn senator may withdraw from the race. There are no plans to attend Thursdays Florida debate.
Staffers have been on partial pay since the NH primary. The Senators plans are very fluid. As of 8:45 this evening, there are no plans for any announcement about whether he will stay in the race or not. The team is wrestling with very few options. The Senator is in Nashville visiting his mother (in her 90s) who has been ill.
From THE FIRST DAY Fox News broke the story last March of his candidacy, Thompson has always had a vice presidential bid in mind. Today a top aide even mentioned the idea on Brian and the Judge on Fox News Radio.

Even as a red state Republican, Senator Thompson repeatedly voted with the trial lawyers against limitations on liability in defective product and medical malpractice cases. He played a critical role in the passage of McCain-Feingolds immoral and blatantly unconstitutional restrictions on political free speech. He supported the expansion of NAFTA and opposes a Marriage Protection Amendment to prevent our most liberal states from establishing legal definitions of marriage that vary from the historical meaning of the word. He voted President Clinton not guilty of perjury at the end of the impeachment trial:

Senator Thompsons weakness on the right to life is about much more than federalism. Even if Roe v. Wade is overturned, hes said consistently since 1994 that he wouldnt support state laws to prohibit abortion. During his 1994 campaign he said, Im not willing to support laws that prohibit early-term abortions. He told Project Vote Smart, Abortions should be legal in all circumstances as long as the procedure is completed within the first trimester of the pregnancy. He explicitly refused to support laws prohibiting abortions for convenience:

In 1996 he signed a document saying, I do not believe abortion should be criminalized. He still personally opposes laws to prohibit abortion:

Heres a quote from that November 7 conversation with Tim Russert:
When I sawand again, ALL CONSISTENT WITH WHAT IVE SAID [emphasis mine]. Ipeople ask me hypothetically, you know, OK, it goes back to the states. Somebody comes up with a bill, and they say were going to outlaw this, that or the other. And my response was I do not think it is a wise thing to criminalize young girls and perhaps their parents as aiders and abettors or perhaps their family physician... I do not think that you can have a, a, a law that would be effective and that would be the right thing to do ...
Oh wow , this is a smear Fred thread . I hope it gets pulled ...
OK Carl you have laid it on the line. Your reputation is at stake. We will know in a few days if you are full of it or have good sources.
Nothing more than you have done to Mitt.
that’s a shame. i had no idea. I no longer think I owe anyone an apology for being skeptical of this entrant. I feel a bit misled by some who acted like he was the second coming. If this information is true, why hasn’t it showed up before tonight?
This has already been debunked by the Thompson campaign.
nice ping action. ask all of your buddies if he's pro abortion or not.
Sticking to form, Fred’s gonna drop out late.
kick him while he’s down huh?
How many times is this crap going to get posted? Thompson has a 100% pro-life Senate record. His views prior to that were still libertarian and within the context of the pro-life movement at the time.
Seriously, it's time the Mods & Jim start deleting these posts which are nothing but lies and FReepers going back and forth on it.
like after his inauguration? ;)
LOOK AT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!
FWIW a blog entry from Race 4 2008
Fred Thompson News
Freds mother is ill and her condition has deteriorated today. I ask that everyone and the candidates give the family space to make their own decisions about the process, and respect whatever his wishes may be.
UPDATE at 9:00 pm: To clear up some rumors floating around, just got word from the campaign:
1. Thompson has not pulled out of Floridas debate Thursday night yet. Fox News is wrong in their reporting yet again, at this stage.
2. Yes, she has been ill for a while, but has improved since earlier today.

These forums are all about open discussion. Why should it be pulled?
And I’m neither for nor against Fred.
still withholding any judgment. FR has proven itself (over and over) to be a most unreliable place for accurate information.
a pity that is, too.
The RINO’s and their minions are running wild around here ....
ok, EEE. thank you for giving me your side.
