ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul today issued the following statement reflecting on the struggle for civil rights and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. :
It is especially fitting that we take the time to reflect on one mans struggles to defend our Constitutional freedoms during this primary election season. January 15 was the birthday of the great freedom fighter, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and on Monday, we honor him nationwide for his sacrifice and love of liberty for all people.
To me, the timing is more than a coincidence. The American people, regardless of color or creed, have the opportunity to choose a candidate who will uplift the ideals for which Dr. King foughtand died.
The fight for freedomthe preservation of our civil rightsis the fight of our lives. Sadly, after Dr. Kings passing we are faced with a violation of our civil rights in the same vein as Jim Crow: The Patriot Act. I have stood against this and all unconstitutional violations of Americans civil rights, and will continue Dr. Kings charge as President.
Dr. King would be disappointed in our current administration for more than its continued disregard for civil rights, as he stated a nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom. We need to change our interventionist foreign policy, and take care of our brothers and sisters at home. Our nation is in a crisis: we are spending billions on war overseas while those around us are suffering and losing jobs, homes, and hope. It is inexcusable; we must solve the economic crisis at home and bring hope to America.
Dr. Kings heroic actions should resonate with us today, as we recognize that our votes strengthen the fight for our civil rights. Liberty is the true antidote to racism, and freedom-- limited, constitutional government devoted to the protection of individual rightscan uplift us all.
Dr. Ron Paul is a ten-term Texas congressman seeking the Republican nomination for President of the United States.
But don't let that stop you from using typically leftist smear tactics in trying to take out someone who is supposedly a non-factor in the elections.
No problem. Ron Paul’s misleading earmark history makes me laugh too.
Thsi latest round of Paul bashing has moved me to go and donate to Paul’s campaign.
I hope he takes that money and uses it in a third party run if he doesn’t win the Rep nomination.
Ron Paul’s name was on the newsletter. Right?
The newsletter made some nasty statements around MLK. Right?
Ron Paul claims he is pure as the driven snow and could not control the newsletter that bore his name. Right?
Ron Paul wants to be the President when he cannot even shut down a little newsletter that is misusing his name and spreading things he does not agree with. You must be joking... Right?
Hey - That third party run was in Ron Paul’s plan all along. So go ahead. You get what you ask for. Hillary is your President.
The Money Bomb idea is from the grassroots, not the Paul campaign.
And notice how the campaign issued the statement on 1/20/2008, five days after Dr. Martin Luther Kings birthday.
Because the day is officially celebrated on the third Monday of January? Duh...
Winning the nomination isn't the goal. Paul is trying to move the GOP back to its traditional roots. He's in the race for the long haul, while Fred Thompson is on the verge of dropping out.
There. I told the truth.
Yes.
The newsletter made some nasty statements around MLK. Right?
Did it? Please post them and we can talk about them and decide if they were nasty or not.
Ron Paul claims he is pure as the driven snow and could not control the newsletter that bore his name. Right?
I've never heard or read him claiming to be pure as the wind-driven snow. I've never heard or read him claiming that he couldn't control any newsletters that bore his name.
Please link or post the statements of Paul's making those claims.
Ron Paul wants to be the President when he cannot even shut down a little newsletter that is misusing his name and spreading things he does not agree with. You must be joking... Right?
Oh, are the newsletters still in operation?
Are you having fun beating up your own strawmen?
BTTT
How is Paul "disrupting" the GOP primaries? So far he hasn't placed above 5th place except for Nevada, and even that was a distant 2nd. Where are all of the hordes of leftists who were supposed to cross-over and vote for Paul? If he's being rejected by GOP primary voters, then you should be celebrating instead of worrying about him.
Not scared - fighting mad.
Ron Paul, the obstetrician, is misusing the process for his personal political gain - 95% of real Republicans agree with me.
So you're acknowledging that a 3rd party run by Paul will hurt the GOP then, right? Because the conventional wisdom here says that only leftists and troofers are supporting Paul in the primaries.
Paul could have shut down that newsletter in the 1980’s but he let it go on. And today he issues this statement that is contradictory to the things that were published in his newsletter. Check Fox online to read exerpts.
I’ll not be commenting on this thread anymore - Have to go away on business.
When I cast a vote for Paul I will be asking for a Paul presidency. I've had the "the democrats might win!!1!" scare tactic used once too often on me to try and get me to vote for the "lesser of two evils" in the past.
No more.
My vote is mine and I will use it to vote for someone, not against someone else.
If Republicans have a problem with that maybe they should try nominating someone I can vote for for a change.
And besides, I thought the company line was that Paul is a non-factor and doesn't matter? If that's the case how can my one little vote give the election to Hillary?
So you keep asserting without providing any proof that Paul had that kind of power in the company publishing the newsletters.

Sorry, I don't take Faux's word on anything anymore.

Ok, it's been fun. Have a safe trip.
Good luck. From what I've seen of the GOP in the past 7 years or so is nothing short of spooky socialism, being infiltrated by all types of big government hacks and special interest types pretending to be conservatives.
It's far beyond depressing.
Nah, he should just bow out gracefully and not endorse the GOP sacrificial lamb who'll end getting slaughtered by Hillary. The GOP will use Paul's 3rd party run as an excuse to why they lost. This is where all of the 3rd party talk is coming from, GOP elitists. Hillary and Obama raised $100 million last year. There's no way in Hell the GOP can defeat Hillary. They don't have the numbers and the other candidates besides Paul and Romney are going broke. Better to just let the GOP learn the hard way. This is what happens when you abandon your principles.
