Fred Thompson's distant third in last night's South Carolina primary, has me re-thinking my support. I say this with disappointment, " I don't think Fred can win the nomination". Part of me wants to support him to the bitter end. Another part feels that in doing so I may only be helping McCain or Huckabee; my least 2 favorite candidates. I live in a Super Tuesday state, and my vote may actually matter this cycle, so I want to use it wisely. The only other candidates who seems like they can stop McCain or Huckabee is Romney or Rudy. If McCain wins in Florida, then he's in good shape to be the nominee. Polling analysis, done before Nevada and South Carolina primary; has him in the lead in Florida at around 23% about a 2 point lead over Rudy whose at 21-22%. Romney is around 18%, Hucakabee 15%, Fred 7%, and Paul 5%. Florida is a winner take all state, so whoever wins will have solid delegate count. Romney has the most delegate at this point, counts vary from source to source, but I put him at 72 to McCain's 38. So a win from Romney in Florida would give him a solid lead going into Super Tuesday. A win by Rudy would knock McCain into 3rd in the delegate count. So my quandry is do I continue to support Fred, or put my support behind a candidate who has a better chance of stopping McCain. In the end I will vote for the GOP nominee regardless. This is only because the troops are deployed, and they don't deserve a Commander-In-Chief from the party that tried to lose the war for them. So the primary is where my vote counts the most, and I want to put the "best man possible" for the job on the ticket. Unfortunately it dosen't look like the "best man" for the job will be at the top of that ticket, but there's is another spot on that ticket. Hey it might be wishful thinking, but what's a Fredhead to do??
For me, the priority is keeping the Clintons out of power. I support Fred as well, but, let’s face it, he’s not going to win the nomination.
Everyone has their own “line in the sand.” Personally, I would find it very difficult to vote for McCain (thanks to his first-amendment Reform Bill, and general aura of psychological instability) or the Huckster (um... because he’s pretty damn stupid as WELL as a huckster), but I don’t believe EITHER of these guys has a chance of beating Hillary or Obama (which is exactly why they’re being pushed by the MSM as our “candidates of choice”).
Sorry, Ron Paul’s out. He makes John McCain look stable. Besides, if I want to support a whiny little girl I’ll pick one of the RATS.
That leaves Romney (a.k.a. Robo-candidate), and Rudy (a social liberal).

The way it’s shaping up for ME, at the moment, is that I’ll vote for any of the above... even the ones I loathe, if it’s a question of keeping THAT SOULLESS CREATURE (and her husband) out of the White House. If the RAT nominee is Obama, I think I’ll sit this one out if Romney or Rudy isn’t our candidate, and let our party get what it deserves for foisting this bunch of losers on us in the first place.
Romney is not conservative. Period.
At least go third party - I may end up there myself. If enough of us do, maybe someone will take notice.
I don’t consider it pouting to not want to waste my vote, and try to stop the candidates I don’t want from getting the nomination. My guy is probably toast at this point, but I will still vote for the GOP nominee in November. I just want the one I can stomach the most. I’m not overly fond of the remaining field, and don’t know where to throw my support at this point.
McCain is going to drop out and support Fred?
Most of us here think Hucklebee is an unqualified, well, idiot. But 30% of our precious republican party voters, who happen to be the bedrock base, passionately want him as president.
There ought to be a lesson in there for those who think they are going to teach the republicans a lesson by not voting for whoever. The republican party, even the United States just isn’t and never has been the perfect mirror you want it to be.
I have always viewed people who don’t vote as derelict citizens. Sorry, it’s a rather obvious civics lesson that transcends even ideology.

All we have to do is highlight Huck’s sissiness, bitchiness, pettyness. And his other chinks.
For the most part they don't. It is independents and crossover dimocrats that carry Captain McQueg and that has always been the case.
This thing will soon sort it self out and, when it's over, McQueg will be wondering what hit him THIS time.

Romney is NOT conservative.
I’m not a Romney supporter, but I admit the executive experience is a major item. Of course none of the democrats have it, and voters usually recognize its value.
I will also say that the apparently defunct Giuliani has it and Giuliani has announced a very straight conservative position on most issues.
In Romney and Giuliani, you have republicans who were liberal on some issues because they were in liberal venues. That’s just the reality of it. They have to change now to run nationally as republicans.
I can accept that IF they mean it.
Troubling thing about McCain is that he is liberal on some issues without needing to be.
It’s a very imperfect world.

As long as Fred is a candidate for President, I support him.
I’ve advised him to stay in the race with a light campaign schedule, at least until someone else clearly has a majority of the delegates. He may be the compromise choice in case of a convention deadlock. This year I wouldn’t rule it out.
Hold out hope for Fred as the savior of a deadlock.
