What's a Fredhead to do??
1/20/2008 | Skully

Fred Thompson's distant third in last night's South Carolina primary, has me re-thinking my support. I say this with disappointment, " I don't think Fred can win the nomination". Part of me wants to support him to the bitter end. Another part feels that in doing so I may only be helping McCain or Huckabee; my least 2 favorite candidates. I live in a Super Tuesday state, and my vote may actually matter this cycle, so I want to use it wisely. The only other candidates who seems like they can stop McCain or Huckabee is Romney or Rudy. If McCain wins in Florida, then he's in good shape to be the nominee. Polling analysis, done before Nevada and South Carolina primary; has him in the lead in Florida at around 23% about a 2 point lead over Rudy whose at 21-22%. Romney is around 18%, Hucakabee 15%, Fred 7%, and Paul 5%. Florida is a winner take all state, so whoever wins will have solid delegate count. Romney has the most delegate at this point, counts vary from source to source, but I put him at 72 to McCain's 38. So a win from Romney in Florida would give him a solid lead going into Super Tuesday. A win by Rudy would knock McCain into 3rd in the delegate count. So my quandry is do I continue to support Fred, or put my support behind a candidate who has a better chance of stopping McCain. In the end I will vote for the GOP nominee regardless. This is only because the troops are deployed, and they don't deserve a Commander-In-Chief from the party that tried to lose the war for them. So the primary is where my vote counts the most, and I want to put the "best man possible" for the job on the ticket. Unfortunately it dosen't look like the "best man" for the job will be at the top of that ticket, but there's is another spot on that ticket. Hey it might be wishful thinking, but what's a Fredhead to do??

You don’t know which is really the lesser of two evils. You just think you do. Often, the worst evils wear the prettiest mask.

While I’ve made donations to Fred, I will never donate to any of the other Republicans in the race. Will I vote for whatever Republican wins the nomination? Of course, since whoever it is will be, even if only marginally, better than either Hillary or Obama. I’m sticking with Fred until the end though.

I was Fred supporter until last night. He needs to get out now. Staying in only helps McCain

Staying out only helps Huckabee, who is the only candidate I dislike more than McCain.

Yup.

The East Coast MSM has made it clear. They want Hillary and Rudy/ Romney because they are NE MSM champions.
The Democrats split the South the past 2 elections by narrow margins.
A weak, social GOP candidate has little contrast to a strong liberal candidate. The MSM smokescreen has clouded your judgement.

I tried to grow a beard like those 2 guys on the right. It itches too much for me. So I must shave. Every day.

And the Supreme Court will take all our rights away, or do you think Hillary will put strict constuctionists on the Court?

“if Lou Dobbs runs third party”

Lou Dobbs is too busy making money to consider running.

Huckabee has no chance of winning, no matter what Thompson does. He’s a complete fraud, and the news media will expose him when it serves their purposes.

All Thompson and Huckabee do if they stay in is help McCain get the nomination.

Better an unelectable pure party than a party that nominates a more conservative candidate than the most likely winner if that nominee is to loose?

Romney is a better choice for conservatives and Americans than Clinton/Obama.

McCain is a better choice for conservatives and Americans than Clinton/Obama.

Huckabee is a better choice for conservatives and Americans than Clinton/Obama.

I wish democrats had as many crybaby ideological purists as Republicans. If we could get 10% of their hardcore base to turn against Hillary because she is ‘pro-war’ we would have this election wrapped up. Democrats seem more pragmatic, because they have no principles; but lets not let the perfect be the enemy of the good (or the not nearly as bad).

All Thompson and Huckabee do if they stay in is help McCain get the nomination.

I sincerely doubt whether Romney can win in a state that isn't either packed with Mormons or where his father wasn't governor. And I am a big fan of the guy himself. But I can't see him winning anything but low-population Western states from here to the convention. He cannot win FL, NY, NJ, TX or CA.

“Romney is not conservative.”

His personal life is conservative.

His record as governor on immigration is conservative.

His foreign policy perspective is conservative.

His criminal justice record is conservative.

In my opinion he is a gay-rights supporter.

His true opinion on abortion is a matter of dispute.

Had a long chat with my brother and sister in law last night after the election results were announced.

My brothers family always votes in lock step for the Democrat candidate no matter what.

This year my sister in law said that she could not support Hillary as she was nothing more than a ( I can not say what she called Hillary but it rhymes with beach).

My brother says he cannot support Obama because underneath the facade of being a Christian he thinks Barracks really supports Muslim causes.

He cannot support John Edwards because he is nothing more than a Ambulance Chasing Marshmallow.

So the both of them have looked at each of the Republican candidates very carefully.

He did not like McCain because he is two faced and sold out his base for the elites in Washington D.C.

He doesn’t think that Huck can win in the Purple S and definitely not in those that are Blue.

He liked Rudy because he is strong on terrorism but wonders about his past and supporting abortion being a drag on his candidacy.

He thought Romney was a good candidate due to his experience at running a business but wondered if Christians could look past his religion long enough to give Mitt a fair evaluation.

Then about a month ago he called me asking what I thought of Fred Thompson as our next president.

I told him that Duncan Hunter and Fred were my picks to lead this country.

Last night when I called, my brother was down over the election results.

I asked him who he would choose as his new candidate should Fred decide to withdraw.

He said that Romney was next on their list.

I have never made a prayer request on FR but today I would like everyone to say a prayer for my brother who was diagnosed with cancer last month.

He is undergoing radiation treatments but a person never knows for sure.

He also has a 100% disability from the VA for the time he spent as a medic with the Marines in Vietnam.

I am hoping personally that Fred does not drop out of the race until we see the outcome of Super Tuesday.

If conservatives will get behind him, he will win in those states. If they don’t, he won’t.

Look at the exit polls from the states where he’s won or come in second. He’s done very, very well with conservatives and Republicans.

It’s McCain who has depended on liberals, moderates, and independents for his votes, not Romney.
