With the results unclear as to whether he comes in 3rd or 4th in S.C. Senator Thompson, thanked South Carolina supporters and said very little about his future. In recent days he has said he would return to Tenn.visit with his Mom and make a decision about his future. Parts of his remarks tonights referred to his candidacy in the past tense, but he issued forward looking challenges to the GOP on leadership and direction. If Huckabee comes up short, it could cause southern conservatives to give Fred another look and thus give him more reasons to stay in beyond the upcoming debates and explosion of state contests on 2/5.

“FredHeads arent there yet. It sounds like Fred is. His speech last night, with no hint of fighting on, signalled hes throwing in the towel. He doesnt strike me as the type to carry on a quixotic effort.”
I would agree. I also think it would be a real shame if Fred stays in the race only to become another Keyes. At this point Fred has a better chance of getting snake bit than of winning the nomination. I don’t see what can be gained by him staying in the race only to become fodder for late night talk show hosts. Fred has had a pretty good career in politics, he was recruited by the grass roots to run for president, and he gave it a shot. unfortunately for him and his supporters he missed, but limping to the finish line in a misguided forlorn hope can only diminish his reputation.
OK, AIT. Assuming that you are right, and I think you are, that we will have a choice between global warming open borders socialist appeaser No.1 or global warming open borders socialist appeaser No.2, and we are not willing to give our vote to either, where do we go?
I am genuinely open to suggestions.
I’m not sure it is the first thng we need, but we will need a candidate eventually, and considering the time remaining, filing deadlines, fund raising and the like, I’d say we will need one soon.
“Fred Thompson is alive and well, and he CAN win the Presidency.”
Explain how this would happen. Where will Thompson finish in Florida? What states will he win on Super Tuesday? How many delegates will he get?

That’s a good question. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a good answer. I’m not very hopeful for the GOPs chances regardless of who finally wins the nomination. As much as that bites, it also is a bit comforting in a strange way. I think I’ll probably be holding my nose and voting for whoever the eventual nominee is. That said there’s a real shot that we’ll have at least 4 years to find and help develop a real contender. I realize that’s a cold comfort, but it would be nice if in 2012 there was a better option than “None Of The Above”
You would not vote for a Republican (D) in the General election, would you!!??
The nomination is going to a brokered convention.
Fred can win it there.
And also, he needs to keep *uckabee far far away from leadership in the GOP.
It’s a long shot, and would depend on Thompson amassing enough delegates - maybe 10% of them to be a credible compromise.
I don’t think he can win it outright through the primaries.
When this campaign started last year, I (and many here) knew that national security was my firewall---a candidate had to get past that before we would even consider his other issues.
Along the way I got pulled here and there on immigration, judges, economic plans, etc. But Fred's withdrawal made me remember my early conviction. Security is the firewall...and no Dem gets anywhere close.
Now I'm coming around to supporting whoever the party nominates. Hillary and Obama will dangerously abandon national security so they can promote their domestic agenda. That's a risk I'm not willing to take. It may not be inspiring, but I'm being true to myself when I realize I have to put country before my personal ideology. At least there's that comfort.
“The nomination is going to a brokered convention.

How can he win it there? How many delegates would he need going in? Where is he going to get those delegates?
Do you really think that a ‘brokered convention’ (which seems to be the new favourite phrase on FR, though most of those using it don’t seem to have the faintest idea what it would involve or how it would play out) is going to select a candidate for President who had already been rejected by Primary voters nationwide?
If a bold member of the Senate or the House would step in and start an Independent Conservative Candidacy soon, by late spring, why there would be a strong outpouring of support, particularly if McCain or Huckabee or some other idiot RINO had locked up the GOP nomination by that time.
“Fred has an important job to do still. He must keep the nomination far out of reach of Mike Huckabee.”
We are facing a looming catastrophy. The catastrophy is John McCain.
Either Thompson had better pick up some momentum or he should get off the pot and withdraw from the race.
I’d rather have him in the White House than Hucakbee or Romney, but his campaign appears to be faltering. Its sole purpose appears at this point to draw votes from Huckabee or Romney. Either one of the latter, despite their many faults and flaws is infinitely preferable to John McCain.
If the "true conservatives" fail to ignite anything but token support, an "Independent Conservative Candidacy" does nothing more than ensure a Clinton presidency.
And I've heard ALL the rationalizations about "principle" RINOs and Republicrats, etc.
The simple fact is that a third party run is doomed to failure, a la Ross Perot.
I, personally, will vote for Romney or, G-d Forbid, McCain or Schmuckabee, should Thompson drop out of the race, because I will do whatever I can to defeat Her Thighness.
This tripe about a third party is the same "teach them a lesson" attitude that gave us a Democrat congress in 2006.
I would support Duncan Hunter wholeheartedly in such a scenario.
GO FRED !
Stand firm for the people for USA for Freedom against MSM hijacking
I got 12 million illegals as a reward for that loyalty. Sorry, no can do. I have heard all the counter arguments.
Ah ah ah very good!Ha hum
But FRED can have brandy and cigars AND GO ON FIGHTING with no mercy for surrendering libs and MSM croocks

And either McCain, Huckabee, or Romney is instead? Get a clue yourself, Thompson is closer to Reagan than any of the others.
I’d have agree with respect to Romney, but not with Huckabee. He is the absolute worst candidate for President that has been proposed by a major political party for 100 years.
If the Republican were to nominate him, and they won’t, the ensuing bloodbath loss of all 50 states, along with most of the republican Senators up for election or reeelection would guarantee a Democrat Senate for decades.
There wouldn’t be another Conservative judge appointed to the court for donkey years.
Stupid, purely stupid. We’re not called the Stupid Party for nothing, you know.
Someone should ask.
