Fred Thompson just spoke to his supporters in South Carolina, where he appears headed for a weak third or fourth place finish. Thompson thanked everyone and then spoke about America and conservatism's contribution to it. He did not talk about Florida or being in the race to stay.
Word is that Thompson will return to Tennessee to visit his mother in the hospital. While he's there, presumably, he'll consider his options. Frankly, and I say this with regret, it's difficult to see the case for him remaining in the race.

The more I think about it from a feet-on-the-ground perspective, the more I think Republicans who are basing their primary choice on Fear of Hillary/Obama are being stupid, stupid, and stupid. They are profoundly misguided.

This is comforting, as I assume you have great faith in his sincerity in this swing. (I know, you did clearly state that that this was the best that could be said.)
I agree on McCain, btw, though I would prefer McCain over Hillary simply on the domestic opposition harrasment and suppression aspect. (that means us, btw.)

As I understood his speech (and I thought it was a concession speech), he acknowleged everyone in the campaign and his constituents. Then he talked about his son and grandson being with him, and they were headed to Tennessee right after his speech to visit with his mom in the hospital.
He never spoke about her condition.

I agree. One other thing to take into consideration, Mitt has Jeb Bush’s campaign team running things for him in Florida. That’s significant.
I hate to see what’s happened to Fred & Duncan. It’s now time to throw all effort behind Mitt. I think the tide is turning for Mitt & it will probably start in Florida.
To make it fair, if McCain wins Florida (likely) then those finishing 3rd or worse should drop out. McCain will lose on super tuesday one on one with either Rudy, Mitt or Huckelberry.

Thank you for that link. How can anyone, after hearing what FRed said, think he is going to withdraw, or even sillier, that he is in this campaign as a placeholder for someone who does not share our core principles?

Come back in four years with Haley Barbour (for instance) and kick her good. If the country hasn’t rediscovered the value of conservatism by the time she’s had power for four years, it truly is too late.

FRed has campaigned where the voters are, not on TV or with MSM, and BigMedia hates him for that. Ambitious politicians who moved the campaign start up several months apparently also moved some folks minds totally out of sync...this race is not over. No one has anything approaching what is needed to win the nomination. Sheesh - talk about nattering nabobs of negativity - some folks who have been posting here tonight really take the cake.

I sent a second contribution to Fred's campaign an hour or so ago. Whether he stays in or not, I want to know that I did what I could to show my support for conservatism.
As to strategy -- if I were Fred -- I would PUNT Florida. Yes, punt Florida. I would focus on Louisiana on Tuesday, and then focus on Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Missouri, along with Tennessee, on Super Tuesday. If Fred goes into those states, he gets a 8 or 9 day head start on Huckabee, who I imagine will be going to Florida. The media markets are also cheaper in those states vs. Florida, allowing him to get more delegate bang for his buck.It's a serious plan that deserves to serious consideration.

Fred DID beat Romney yesterday, but don’t suggest that it was because Romney didn’t compete in SC.
