FRED THOMPSON, IN OR OUT? (Mother in hospital)
PowerLine ^ | January 19, 2008

Posted on 01/19/2008 8:07:10 PM PST by restornu

Fred Thompson just spoke to his supporters in South Carolina, where he appears headed for a weak third or fourth place finish. Thompson thanked everyone and then spoke about America and conservatism's contribution to it. He did not talk about Florida or being in the race to stay.

Word is that Thompson will return to Tennessee to visit his mother in the hospital. While he's there, presumably, he'll consider his options. Frankly, and I say this with regret, it's difficult to see the case for him remaining in the race.

“And it’s a damn shame. I just had a friend over tonight who is very liberal and he is his choice.”

- Because he would be the easiest to beat in the general. Sadly, if you can win Republican primaries, you surely can’t win a general election.

I think Fred may have been a stalking horse. I’m still having a hard time believing any well known candidate could run a campaign that bad.

What Thompson has managed to do is throw a wet blanket on the conservative movement. Our opposition to McCain should be enough to stop him. But we will fail if our allegiance remains to one of McCain's friends who has ran one of the poorest primary campaigns ever.

People are scratching their heads wondering how the GOP has slipped so far, after the betrayals by John McCain over the last decade, that McCain would win two very important early primaries (NH & SC). The answer to that is Fred Thompson's lethargic campaign.

Because W wants McCain in the White House Fred was sent in to make certain Rudy's bid was short lived. W owes McCain a bunch of favors as he has been W's pack mule throughout his eighth years for all his more liberal ideas. The establishment GOP which is Rockefeller did not want Rudy in at all because he was not manageable. The same reason they attack Ron Paul as fringe because they can't own or control him and the same reason they made sure Hunter was completely ignored.

The corporate paid talking head so called conservative talk radio shills did not give Hunter even a mention and gave Paul their disdain. Once again the looser? Conservatives. Fred sold us out while in the senate but some just don't want to remember or face that fact. He did it not once but several times. First in the hearings then in the trial.

It's much easier it seems to create a make believe candidate like what happened in 2000 with so called Conservative Bush who as well is at best moderate but leans liberal on many issues. It's taken nearly eight years for some to take off the Bush Blinders and see him for what he is.

Fred will drop out maybe as early as tomorrow afternoon more likely after Florida. He has accomplished what he was sent in to do. Derail the ultral liberal Rudy then the Conservative movement yet again for another election cycle. W wants McCain to replace him but will settle for any of the rest except Paul and Rudy. That leaves Mitt, Huck, and McCain all three globalist shills like W. W yet again wrecks another election cycle for conservatives and nobody saw the train wreck coming. The good news is Bush is term limited and no more election management for him.

If McCain’s win tonight helps take Huckabust out, that’s a good thing. Once he’s out it’s time to turn up the heat on McCain.

What Fred has accomplished so far is to pull ALL of the other candidates to the right.

Well, without addressing this directly, it’s probably a bit like the mantra of Jesse Jackson’s campaign AFTER it had failed and he’d dropped out. It was some years ago, but I recall it: “Jesse Made A Difference!!!”

It was never clear just what that meant. Probably to anyone.

Rush has no agenda other than promoting conservatism regardless of political ramifications or political parties.
The GOP begged for his help in 2006 and he gave it in spite of his disgust with the RINO leadership.Unfortunately, the GOP was too far down the liberal road for even Rush to rescue.
He swore after that he would never carry the water for phoney conservatives again.
So don’t gripe—Rush has been the best at what he does for almost 20 years now and if you don’t like it—get your own damn show!

Yes, but I think Huckabee is just about done. With that posted, I don’t think we can wait one more daggone second to turn the heat on McCain.

This is an emergency. A McCain nomination in the GOP is absolutely the worst possible scenario that I can imagine. Only it’s made even worse with Hillary or B. Hussein Obama on the ballot in the general election. Good grief, this could be a disaster for America!

We have to stop McCain, we have to stop him.

Don’t know Rush much do you?

You're right...I've only been listening to him since 1992. Maybe that's not enough time to understand Rush.

Do you deny he wasted weeks focusing on Hillary when there was no need at this juncture to do so? There's plenty of time to take on Hillary should she be the nominee.

If Rush wants a conservative to head the Republican ticket, he needs to spend more time focusing on the Republican candidates.

Nope you've been had and so have conservatives yet again. If Fred had wanted the job he would have came into the race earlier. Politically he's smarter than that. He would have also been more agressive. But then again the last time I can remember hearing about him actually getting agressive was in a Tennessee court room concerning our corrupt governor at the time. This was before he ran for senator.

Fred's a decent guy and would have been a great state attorney general. He got in way over his head in the senate especially toward the last.

Exactly! Huckabee's numbers have been falling. Now is the time to focus on McCain. You also have to remember Fred won't be the only one gunning for him. Romney will pull out all the stops. There's no love lost between those two. He'll also have to contend with Giuliani in FL.

Frankly, I am sick of the GOP and where it is heading. Fred Thompson should have cleaned those bozo’s clocks tonight in S.C. I fear for the Republic

Headache,

It may be time to take up a hobby like growing award winning roses or something, on top of stores of H2O, Gold, a car that can run on propane etc :-), just as a backup. For us Reaganites, it feels like it is over.

This Conservative didn't leave the GOP, The GOP left ME.

I feel sorry for Rush, He may be the one that regrets not throwing his support to Fred. He will be the one wondering if he could have been the "contenda", when Hilda tries ramming higher taxes, Hilda-care-2 and stagflation down our throats.
