Thompson plans to go on to Florida

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Fred Thompson, trailing Mike Huckabee and John McCain in the polls, will continue his presidential bid even if he finishes third in today's South Carolina primary, his campaign said.

Thompson, who had talked of South Carolina as his last stand, appeared this afternoon at a gun show in a suburban Shriners' auditorium -- a natural fit given his strong support of the Second Amendment right to own firearms. Several patrons wore "Fred '08" stickers on their clothing; as Thompson swept into the packed hall he was greeted by a modest round of applause.

"Go, Fred!" one woman shouted.

"How we doin'?" Thompson asked, greeting passers-by as he walked along the narrow aisles displaying hunting scopes and high-tech shotguns. He shook hands, paused for autographs, and posed for photos snapped on cell phones.

After being vilified by the Left and MSM for 7 years I’m in no mood for “nice”. I want “kick ass and take names”.

But for well-made shoes that'll last the better part of two decades, nothing beats the products of the old British shoemakers. ....like Church's.
Excellent shoes. I'm especially partial towards their Cap Toe and Medallion styles.

“Thompson may not have literally said “I am pulling out if I don’t win SC” but he certainly gave the strong impression his campaign was depending on South Carolina.”

I believe Fred said something to the effect that SC was his line in the sand. I also believe this was pretty soon after NH when Fred decided to skip MI and put all his resources in SC. If all of his resources and all the time he spent campaigning in SC can’t get him any higher than 3rd, then I would like to know exactly where he can win. The Fred Heads usually skip over this question.

In interviews all he is ever asked about are STUPID things

Since that is no different from what the other candidates get asked it's no reason to become combative over it. Just laugh it off and tell your side of the story.

If its McCain or Huckabee, that will not happen on FR. Guarantee it.

That will not happen hopefully. I am hoping that McCain and Huckster is just a fad like Obama mania that happened before and after Iowa.

Thompson, who had talked of South Carolina as his last stand,

As far as I know, Fred never said that. A lot of ink has been spilled by others saying it.

No candidate ‘deserves’ to win a primary simply because he shows up. This kind of thinking is frightening.

“Thompson plans to go on to Florida
So much for his position on fiscal responsibility...think of all those wasted campaign dollars!”

Really, since most people will probably will have voted by the time he gets here.

He has said he is drawing a line, making his stand,

Fred said that in the context of the Republicans taking a stand for conservatism over the moderate to liberal bent of some other candidates.

Who are you shilling for or are you one of the altruistic snobs “above it all”...?

It's posts like this that make visiting this site so worthwhile... thanks, Khepri!

Actually, given the nature of much of the commentary that crawls around here, you'd have to be pretty low NOT to be above it!

He could have done that during Chinagate.

Whether you like it or not, Huckabee is doing well because people like him (I being from Arkansas don't support him because of MANY reasons) but Huckabee is a likable guy. The same thing that worked for Bill Clinton is working for Huckabee.

And no one is helping the Republican Party by trashing other Republican candidates. It would be more helpful to trash the DEMOCRATS (especially Hillary who deserves it)!

For me, I have a favorite (and it's not Huckabee) but when it comes down to any Republican against Hillary Clinton I will vote for the Republican (even if I have to hold my nose)!

****This is where we make our stand — this is where I have chosen to make my stand,” Thompson told a crowd at a barbecue restaurant. He later told reporters he needs to do well in South Carolina, which votes Jan. 19. “There’s no question about it. It could prove at the end of the day that South Carolina is determinative as far as I’m concerned, but we’re not there yet,” he said.****

He didn’t say, “last” but the last line surely leads you to that conclusion or at the very least, could.

If your primary hasn’t happened yet, then all the votes have not been cast.

Thompson may not have literally said “I am pulling out if I don’t win SC” but he certainly gave the strong impression his campaign was depending on South Carolina.

But when asked this morning about his plans if he loses he literally said "I don't talk about failing".

The race is too fluid with too many weak candidates to dropout before super tuesday.

Another disingenuous comment formt the RINO crowd.

There was nothing disappointing in New Hampshire, Michigan, Wyoming and Nevada....he didn’t run there, you know it as well as we do.

If he finishes third, it will be clar that all he’s doing is splitting the conservative vote and allowing the *ahem* less-conservative opponents to win.
__________

And if Fred leaves, who do you suggest the REAL conservative is?
