Thompson plans to go on to Florida

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Fred Thompson, trailing Mike Huckabee and John McCain in the polls, will continue his presidential bid even if he finishes third in today's South Carolina primary, his campaign said.

Thompson, who had talked of South Carolina as his last stand, appeared this afternoon at a gun show in a suburban Shriners' auditorium -- a natural fit given his strong support of the Second Amendment right to own firearms. Several patrons wore "Fred '08" stickers on their clothing; as Thompson swept into the packed hall he was greeted by a modest round of applause.

"Go, Fred!" one woman shouted.

"How we doin'?" Thompson asked, greeting passers-by as he walked along the narrow aisles displaying hunting scopes and high-tech shotguns. He shook hands, paused for autographs, and posed for photos snapped on cell phones.

Heard that if he gets out it helps Huckabee. If he stays in he sucks away Huckabee votes and that helps Mc Cain.

Fred’s campaign is dead.

Before too long he will drop out and all of a sudden anyone who supports someone but the next golden calf candidate, be it huckster, mcarrrrrgh, or flipp mitt, will be “for Hillary.”

Their blemishes will be long forgotten.

Fred is doing fine in South Carolina today. We are getting out the vote. Just wait for the results.

Whichever of the frontfunners win.... we all lose.

If Fred can’t win in SC, where can he win?

You can’t get the nomination in Tennessee alone.

He never said he was ever getting out.

Are you sure? He said he needed number one or strong two or he would get out.

Why draw one like Fred if it is meaningless.

That’s fine with me. I voted early this week in Florida.

Fred got my vote:) In the meantime- I’ve chatted with some neighbors and they are now reading Fred’s positions at fred08. One of them said to me- I didn’t know anyone in politics thought this way!! She’s thrilled and now a confirmed supporter for Fred.

You show me where he used the words “getting out”. He NEVER has. He has said he is drawing a line, making his stand, he has said that he needs a strong showing but he has never said “first or out” or even “first or second or out”.

This has got to stop... If he finishes third, it will be clar that all he’s doing is splitting the conservative vote and allowing the *ahem* less-conservative opponents to win. Tancredo knew when to call it quits, and I admire him greatly for that. He was my guy, but there was never the illusion that he might actually win. This will only aid the idea that Thompson’s in the race to divide the anti-McCain vote.
