Fred Takes His Shots, Defends Campaign

SENECA, S.C. -- Thompson took a couple of shots at Romney and Huckabee on authenticity and immigration, respectively, when given the chance here during a radio interview and questions from the crowd that followed.

“I haven’t changed positions,” Thompson told about 125 people packed into the Seneca Family Restaurant in the northwest socially conservative reaches of the state. “I have been consistent… I haven’t had to have that long a memory to remember where I stand. All these other fellows, you wouldn’t recognize them from where they were their entire political lives before this.”

Later, a man, who is actually from Kentucky and has followed Thompson to different events, told him he’s “sick of this illegal problem” and took shots at McCain and Huckabee for their stances and record on immigration.

“Well, if you could throw in something about Romney, that’d be all right,” Thompson said, smiling. He said he disagrees with Huckabee and his friend McCain on immigration. And added, “Now everyone’s tough on the border and immigration. Well, I’m glad for the new conversions; it’s always welcome.”

He then went after Huckabee harder with usual barb. “Some people talk about sanctuary cities,” Thompson said. “He apparently wanted a sanctuary state.”

Then it was Romney’s turn. “Romney’s flipped all over the place,” Thompson began, adding that the country needs a president who is honest and has integrity. “How are people going to know where you will be in the future, when they’ve flipped all over the place.”

The Romney folks have been alternatively:

* yelling at Fred to drop out
* calling him McCain's stooge
* trying to get Fred to attack McCain even though Mitt isn't attacking McCain
* hoping Fred endorses Romney
* Claiming Fred is going to endorse McCain

Well, let me tell ya, those Mitt-worshipers aren't worth a pail of warm spit!

And Fred is more than willing to tell it like it is about that phony Romney.

Odd how he is so hesitant to shoot at the front runner McCain. In a state where McCain is hugely vulnerable on Immigration everyone is walking on egg shells around him. Someone better take out after McCain soon or he is going to walk to the nomination while all the also rans destroy each other.

Well, MNJohnnie, you're usually the nut, but today you're the blind squirrel. Better be careful around Huckabee and his popcorn popper! :-)

It does seem like Sen. Thompson is running a "I'll run for president as long as I don't interfere with my friend's chances" campaign.

Fred has a real chance to take votes from McCain. McCain is sort of the default setting for Establishment Republicans. Going after the bible thumpers from Huck is a battle Fred cannot win. So Fred and Huck commit facticide in SC and that leaves you McCain-Romnmy-Gulianni to choose from. You going to be happy with any of those?

Fred is choosing to fight a battle he cannot win in order to avoid a battle he could win. He doesn't have enough margin to make this sort of tactical mistake.

McCain is leading in FLA and CA. Might take NY and NJ. If someone doesn't get off their butt and go after McCain he is going to walk to the nomination while the also rans frag each other. People better get over their false optimism about McCain being done just because most people don't like him here on Freeper. He has a very real shot at the nomination

If McCain has no shot why is he ahead in the polls just about every where?

People are getting sucked into the McCain Cult of Personality because all the other candidates are busy shooting at each other. It gives McCain this false glow as if he were above petty politics.

Someone needs to be pointing out that while McCain talks a good game, his record says quite a different story.

McCain wins SC he probably will win FLA which is 57 winner take all delegates. That rockets him into the lead. In a year where everyone hates everyone else candidate, that can be enough to tilt the "undecideds" to McCain.

I will be more then happy to eat crow if you two turn out to be right and I am just playing chicken little, but just looking at the state by state data, things look bleak.

I don’t believe I’ve made the case that McCain can’t win the nomination. I have made the case he won’t get the vote in November to put him in the White House.

If you look at the last two presidential elections, it’s tough to see where a guy like McCain is going to go for votes, if conservatives go walkabout on his arse in November.

One could make the case he’ll get it from democrats, and if so that pretty much verifies everything we’ve been saying about him.

If he were a Reagan, I would temper that. John is no Reagan.

If McCain or Huckabee get the nod, Talk Radio will not be behind them. And I believe a Republican can not win the White House without Talk Radio or the New Media.

The same criticism applies to Fred. He said he was pro-choice during his 1994 campaign. He was also in favor of Amnesty as recently as a year ago.

Where does this myth of Fred the "consistent conservative" come from?

It's amazing how so many people's perceptions don't fit reality.

How about a source for those accusations eh?

Why isn't Romney attacking McCain?

Because they are in a Gay Relationship. JUST KIDDING!!!
I'm thinking that Romney is "hedging his bets"; in case he doesn't get the nomination, he'd settle for the VEEP spot.

My take is similar to yours. I don’t think McCain, Giuliani or Huckabee could get elected in November, if they are the nominee, and frankly I don’t see much more hope for Romney.

I’ve had people defend him on the point of his healthcare plan in Mass., but I’m not a fan of it.

These candidates don’t strike me as conservatives. They strike me as people who are compassionate conservatives. And the way they mean it, I think it would be insulting to a lot of people not to drop the last word and replace it with Liberals(R).

Fred is handling McCain just right tactically. McCain hates to not be the center of attention, it drives him nuts. He is already getting snippy and Fred knows this. Why fight him directly and risk looking harsh to a war hero when you can just let him slip away and goes nuts...
