Tough Luck, Hillary
New York Post ^ | January 18, 2008 | Geoff Earle

A federal court yesterday dealt a bad hand to Hillary Rodham Clinton, smacking down an effort to stop Nevadans from caucusing at Las Vegas casinos like Caesars Palace and the Flamingo hotel.

The Nevada teachers union, which has strong ties to Clinton, sued with other plaintiffs in Las Vegas this week to halt an effort to let casino cooks, maids and card dealers caucus at nine downtown casino sites.

The effort to create "at large" precincts - backed by the state Democratic Party - was aimed at getting more low-wage workers to participate in the election process.

Clinton and Barack Obama are running neck and neck in Nevada, which holds its caucuses tomorrow.

Although the casino plan passed unanimously when the state party approved it in March, the Nevada State Education Association and people tied to the Clinton camp filed suit just two days after the powerful, 60,000-strong Culinary Workers Union endorsed Obama.

But the judge who made yesterday's ruling didn't buy the argument that the precincts violate the "one man, one vote" principle

"We aren't voting here, we're caucusing. That's something that parties decide," Judge James Mahan said.""

The Clinton camp says it was never behind the lawsuit - although Bill Clinton ripped the process as unfair in comments this week.

Why "make a special rule only for these workers?" he said. "For the rest of you other workers, tough luck. I think the rules ought to be the same for everyone."

The Clinton camp worries that influence would be distributed unevenly, since the number of delegates at stake would be based on attendance at the casino sites - but based on voter registration at other sites.

Sen. Clinton said she has "no opinion on the lawsuit," though she suggested people other than casino workers should get special precincts.

I don’t know that this applies to the general election. This is the party primary rules here like the Iowa caucuses and others, it has latitude not granted under federal and state general election rules.

Whatever happened to the Dem. state party demand that those who caucus at the “at large” precincts submit photo ID?

Did they just find out about this? Hillary doesn’t seem to have very good help. Or is it that it didn’t matter when she was the “inevitable” Dem nominee? Lawsuits already and it’s not even the General Election yet.

Do you really think the voters will ever figure out what the Clintons are up to? It’s been sixteen years now, and apparently the sheeple still don’t understand the Clintons.

The Clintons are all for minorities, as long as they stay in their place, and don't get in the way..........

A wonderful statement, and we could add: "so long as they vote Clinton."

Can anyone explain what ol’ billy meant when he said on some clip that the casino “votes” would be worth five times—at least—more than the other “votes”?

Was that just more billy blow?

Speaking of Perot, keep your eye on Bloomberg. He might think he can be the next Perot and enter as a self-financed independent at the request of his friend, Her Royal Thighness, thinking that he would draw more votes away from the GOP candidate than from her. I don’t think that the logic this time around is very sound, but no one should expect expect logic on the left to prevail.

This can bite repubs in the butt...

As I understand it, this rule only applies to the Democrat caucus in Nevada, and not to the general election. So your argument is not valid.

From the NY Post article: The Clinton camp promised to "play by the rules that we're given."

For anyone who believes that promise, I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you.

This can bite repubs in the butt...and maybe lose Nevada for the foreseeable future

“at large” precincts where one just has to say he works somewhere near + no voter ID requirement= Massive fraud capabilities in a general election

Exactly my concern--that this is a Soros-manipulated strategy that seek to impact far beyond NV.

My understanding is that the mega-precincts in the casinos required photo ID for those voting there. This is one more instance of Democrat hypocrisy. Generally, they oppose voter ID because a fair amount of the Democrat vote is illegal. However, in Nevada both the state and national parties approved voter ID in this one instance.
